Standard stochastic control methods assume that the probability distribution of uncertain variables is available. Unfortunately, in practice, obtaining accurate distribution information is a challenging task. To resolve this issue, we investigate the problem of designing a control policy that is robust against errors in the empirical distribution obtained from data. This problem can be formulated as a two-player zero-sum dynamic game problem, where the action space of the adversarial player is a Wasserstein ball centered at the empirical distribution. We propose computationally tractable value and policy iteration algorithms with explicit estimates of the number of iterations required for constructing an ∊-optimal policy. We show that the contraction property of associated Bellman operators extends a single-stage out-of-sample performance guarantee, obtained using a measure concentration inequality, to the corresponding multi-stage guarantee without any degradation in the confidence level. In addition, we characterize an explicit form of the optimal distributionally robust control policy and the worst-case distribution policy for linear-quadratic problems with Wasserstein penalty. Our study indicates that dynamic programming and Kantorovich duality play a critical role in solving and analyzing the Wasserstein distributionally robust stochastic control problems. BACKGROUND:The United Kingdom reported the emergence of a new and highly transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variant (B.1.1.7) that rapidly spread to other countries. The impact of this new mutation-which occurs in the S protein-on infectivity, virulence, and current vaccine effectiveness is still under evaluation. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study is to sequence SARS-CoV-2 samples of cases in Romania to detect the B.1.1.7 variant and compare these samples with sequences submitted to GISAID. METHODS:SARS-CoV-2 samples were sequenced and amino acid substitution analysis was performed using the CoV-GLUE platform. RESULTS:We have identified the first cases of the B.1.1.7 variant in samples collected from Romanian patients, of which one was traced to the region of the United Kingdom where the new variant was originally sequenced. Mutations in nonstructural protein 3 (Nsp3; N844S and D455N) and ORF3a (L15F) were also detected, indicating common ancestry with UK strains as well as remote connections with strains from Nagasaki, Japan. CONCLUSIONS:These results indicate, for the first time, the presence and characteristics of the new variant B.1.1.7 in Romania and underscore the need for increased genomic sequencing in patients with confirmed COVID-19.

Intelligent decision-making (IDM) is a cornerstone of artificial intelligence (AI) designed to automate or augment decision processes. Modern IDM paradigms integrate advanced frameworks to enable intelligent agents to make effective and adaptive choices and decompose complex tasks into manageable steps, such as AI agents and high-level reinforcement learning. Recent advances in multimodal foundation-based approaches unify diverse input modalities—such as vision, language, and sensory data—into a cohesive decision-making process. Foundation models (FMs) have become pivotal in science and industry, transforming decision-making and research capabilities. Their large-scale, multimodal data-processing abilities foster adaptability and interdisciplinary breakthroughs across fields such as healthcare, life sciences, and education. This survey examines IDM’s evolution, advanced paradigms with FMs and their transformative impact on decision-making across diverse scientific and industrial domains, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in building efficient, adaptive, and ethical decision systems.

Tasks of emergency evacuation planning on dynamic networks in fuzzy conditions are becoming ubiquitous because of the imprecise time-dependent nature and arguments of network. Underlying basis for evacuation tasks are different types of flow algorithms. The paper aims to present the urgent problem of artificial intelligence, namely, the development of a method for finding the optimal evacuation plan in a transportation network in fuzzy conditions as the universal flow problem. The proposed method consists in transporting the maximum number of aggrieved in each time interval based on finding the maximum flow of the earliest arrival in a fuzzy dynamic transportation network. The process of flow conveying is implemented on the network with time-dependent parameters. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a method operating arc capacities and traversal times that can vary depending on the flow departure time and are represented in a fuzzy form. Technique of blurring fuzzy numbers is represented to facilitate calculations. A case-study in the area of Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Russia and surroundings is conducted to illustrate proposed algorithm. Experiments on the designed network were conducted to check resistance of the network to topology changes.

Ensuring safety in trajectory planning of multirotor systems is an essential element for risk-free operation. Even if the generated trajectory is known to be safe in the planning phase, unknown disturbance during an actual operation can lead to a dangerous situation. This paper proposes safety-guaranteed receding horizon planning against unknown, but bounded, disturbances. We first characterize forward reachable set (FRS) of the system, the set of states after a certain duration considering all possible disturbances, using Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) reachability analysis. To compute the FRSs in real-time, we conservatively approximate the true FRS and perform ellipsoidal parameterization on the FRSs. Using the FRSs, we can plan a robust trajectory that avoids risky regions and rapidly re-plan the trajectory when the system encounters sudden disturbance. The proposed method is validated through an experiment of avoiding obstacles in a wind.

A variational observation model of 3D object for probabilistic semantic SLAM

We present a Bayesian object observation model for complete probabilistic semantic SLAM. Recent studies on object detection and feature extraction have become important for scene understanding and 3D mapping. However, 3D shape of the object is too complex to formulate the probabilistic observation model;therefore, performing the Bayesian inference of the object-oriented features as well as their pose is less considered. Besides, when the robot equipped with an RGB mono camera only observes the projected single view of an object, a significant amount of the 3D shape information is abandoned. Due to these limitations, semantic SLAM and viewpoint-independent loop closure using volumetric 3D object shape is challenging. In order to enable the complete formulation of probabilistic semantic SLAM, we approximate the observation model of a 3D object with a tractable distribution. We also estimate the variational likelihood from the 2D image of the object to exploit its observed single view. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we perform pose and feature estimation, and demonstrate that the automatic loop closure works seamlessly without additional loop detector in various environments. A variational feature encoding method of 3d object for probabilistic semantic SLAM

This paper presents a feature encoding method of complex 3D objects for high-level semantic features. Recent approaches to object recognition methods become important for semantic simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). However, there is a lack of consideration of the probabilistic observation model for 3D objects, as the shape of a 3D object basically follows a complex probability distribution. Furthermore, since the mobile robot equipped with a range sensor observes only a single view, much information of the object shape is discarded. These limitations are the major obstacles to semantic SLAM and view-independent loop closure using 3D object shapes as features. In order to enable the numerical analysis for the Bayesian inference, we approximate the true observation model of 3D objects to tractable distributions. Since the observation likelihood can be obtained from the generative model, we formulate the true generative model for 3D object with the Bayesian networks. To capture these complex distributions, we apply a variational auto-encoder. To analyze the approximated distributions and encoded features, we perform classification with maximum likelihood estimation and shape retrieval. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Beam Squint and Channel Estimation for Wideband mmWave Massive MIMO-OFDM systems

With the increasing scale of antenna arrays in wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, the physical propagation delays of electromagnetic waves traveling across the whole array will become large and comparable to the time-domain sample period, which is known as the spatial-wideband effect. In this case, different subcarriers in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system will "see" distinct angles of arrival (AoAs) for the same path. This effect is known as beam squint, resulting from the spatial-wideband effect, and makes the approaches based on the conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) model, such as channel estimation and precoding, inapplicable. After discussing the relationship between beam squint and the spatial-wideband effect, we propose a channel estimation scheme for frequency-division duplex (FDD) mmWave massive MIMO-OFDM systems with hybrid analog/digital precoding, which takes the beam squint effect into consideration. A super-resolution compressed sensing approach is developed to extract the frequency-insensitive parameters of each uplink channel path, i.e., the AoA and the time delay, and the frequency-sensitive parameter, i.e., the complex channel gain. With the help of the reciprocity of these frequency-insensitive parameters in FDD systems, the downlink channel estimation can be greatly simplified, where only limited pilots are needed to obtain downlink complex gains and reconstruct downlink channels. In modern era, one of the rising power quality (PQ) concern is harmonics distortion (HD). The HD is usually produced by increase in the utilization of nonlinear user loads at domestic level. It not only spoils the PQ but also have harmful effects on electrical appliances. So, this paper presents a new approach to mitigate the HD in home appliances rapidly by utilizing the active band pass filter (ABPF). The fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique is employed for the detection of harmonics in appliances. The band pass filter dramatically affects the response time of active filter. The suggested control methodology is capable to eliminate harmonics from distorted input voltage waveform and provides a pure sinusoidal waveform. The prototype of this model is also implemented. Experimental results along with simulation show that the proposed model is quite effective in eliminating HD despite load variations and also useful to compensate the reactive power in electronic home appliances. Hence, this technique is cost effective for domestic users with high quality performance in all aspects.
