Quadratic stability of process systems in generalized lotka-volterra form

The global and local stability of process systems in generalized Lotka-Volterra form is studied in this paper using entropy-like and quadratic Lyapunov function candidates. The global stability check for LV models is performed by solving an LMI for a diagonal positive semi-definite matrix using singular perturbation technique. It is shown that a quadratic Lyapunov function can also be determined by solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In addition, the quadratic stability neighborhood is convex in the space of the quasi-monomials and can be estimated by computing its corner points using LMIs. Furthermore, it is proved that quadratic stability with a diagonal weighting matrix enables to construct a dissipative-Hamiltonian description of the system. The developed methods are illustrated on the model of a continuously stirred tank reactor with a nonlinear reaction system.

We consider the problem of scheduling heterogeneous batch processor under the conditions non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals and incompatible job families. The problem studied in this paper is motivated by heat-treatment operations in the pre-casting stage of steel casting manufacturing. We proposed a few heuristic algorithms with maximizing the average utilization of batch processors as scheduling objective. From the computational experiments carried out, it appears that all the proposed heuristics are yielding very close to the optimum (estimated optimum) average utilization of the batch processors. Further, we carried out a few simple sensitivity analyses. From sensitivity analysis, in general, it appears that there is an influence on the performance of the proposed heuristic algorithms when the input parameter changes. The influence observed is further verified statistically. Finally, it is observed that with respect to the scheduling objective, the choice of the best algorithm(s) do not significantly affected due to changes in the parameters considered.

In this paper we argue in favor of remote data access based on the principle of abstract data types. This paradigm has inherent advantages over the traditional file-oriented approach, especially when used in a ubiquitous computing environment, where data producers and consumers can be distributed and emerge dynamically. The 'datlet', a mobile storage device that implements the proposed approach, is presented in detail. We also discuss how a datlet can be embedded in everyday objects to create hybrid information objects, leading to an intuitive information manipulation model. © 2003 IEEE.

The "tangible file system"/sup 1/ is a document management and access infrastructure for the ubiquitous computing era. It provides a transparent user interface which takes advantage of physical user actions for the purpose of directory management, data sharing and document location tracking. This is achieved by digitally augmenting both documents and document containers to detect the location of physical information and to trigger corresponding update actions in the electronic world. The system is built using the Datlet [9] architecture to allow any 'tool-objects' to be applied to 'data-objects', thereby enabling an even more natural user interaction based on affordances.

The zero dynamics of simple continuous and fed-batch biore-actors is investigated in this paper for different input and output selections. A function λ generating the necessary coordinates transformation has been determined analytically for each case solving a simple PDE, and the resulting coordinates transformations have found to be invertible on the physically meaningful operating region. It is shown that that the investigated continuous and fed-batch bioreactors are globally minimum phase systems with the examined reaction rate function if the manipulable input is the inlet feed flow rate and the output is the substrate concentration. It is also shown that the zero dynamics may have multiple (locally stable and unstable) equilibria if the input is the inlet feed flow rate and the output is the biomass concentration. © 2003 EUCA.

Scaling network intrusion detection to high network speeds can be achieved using multiple sensors operating in parallel coupled with a suitable load balancing traffic splitter. This paper examines a splitter architecture that incorporates two methods for improving system performance: the first is the use of early filtering where a portion of the packets is processed on the splitter instead of the sensors. The second is the use of locality buffering, where the splitter reorders packets in a way that improves memory access locality on the sensors. Our experiments suggest that early filtering reduces the number of packets to be processed by 32%, giving a 8% increase in sensor performance, while locality buffers improve sensor performance by about 10%. Combined together, the two methods result in an overall improvement of 20% while the performance of the slowest sensor is improved by 14%.

The presence of mobile phones on freeways can be used to provide information for surveillance and to early detect anomalous traffic behaviors. Toward this end, an extension of a standard freeway macroscopic model is presented that allows to describe the dynamic of the overall cars, together with variables representing the percentage of active mobiles on the freeway. A freeway trunk is divided in sections, each covered by a cell of the wireless network and associated with state variables describing density of vehicles, mean velocity, and percentage of active mobile phones. The measurements available from the mobiles enable an extended Kalman filter to determine estimates of the state variables that can be used to supervise the traffic behavior. A complex simulation setup has been developed with a microscopic simulator of the freeway traffic and an emulator of the wireless network. Preliminary simulation results are reported to show the effectiveness and potential of the proposed approach for automatic traffic surveillance and incident detection. © 2003 International Federation of Automatic Control.

An extension of quadratic boundedness to the discrete-time setting is proposed as a powerful mathematical tool to address stability problems for linear systems. Necessary and sufficient stability conditions have been stated and upper bounds on the state variables can be derived. Suitable Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) guarantee the numerical tractability. As an example of application, a problem of peak-to-peak filtering is addressed and LMI conditions are established for the purpose of synthesis. Invariant sets as well as bounding sequences for the estimation error are computed. Uncertainties affecting the system and measurement equations can be easily taken into account. ©2003 IFAC.

The problems related to supporting multicast connections with quality of service (QoS) requirements are studied. We investigate the problem of optimal resource allocation in the context of performance dependent costs. In this context each network element can offer several QoS guarantees, each associated with a different cost. This is a natural extension to the commonly used bi-criteria model, where each link is associated with a single delay and a single cost. This framework is simple yet strong enough to model many practical interesting networking problems. The fundamental multicast resource allocation problem under this framework is how to optimally allocate QoS requirements on the links of the multicast tree. One needs to partition the end-to-end QoS requirement along the various paths in a tree. The goal is to satisfy the end-to-end QoS requirement with minimum cost. Previous studies under this framework considered single-source multicast connections, where the end-to-end QoS requirement is specified from the source to all other multicast group members. In this paper we extend these results to the more general, and considerably harder case of multicast sessions, where the end-to-end requirement hold for every path between any two multicast group members. Our aim is to provide rigorous solutions, with proven performance guarantees, by way of algorithmic analysis. The problem under investigation is NP hard for general cost functions, thus we first present a pseudopolynomial exact solution. From this solution we derive two efficient /spl epsi/-approximate solutions. One achieves optimal cost, but may violate the end-to-end delay requirement by a factor of (1 + /spl epsi/), and the other strictly obeys the bounds and achieves a cost within a factor of (1+/spl epsi/) of the optimum. Furthermore, we present improved results for discrete cost functions, and give a simple linear-time exact polynomial solution for a specific, and practically interesting, family of convex
