Sonoluminescence and phase diagrams of single bubbles at low dissolved air concentrations

We studied experimentally the dependence of light emission and phase space boundaries of air bubbles in water on the level of degassing down to low partial pressures of 15 mmHg. We found that the maximum obtainable light intensity increased monotonically by lowering the concentration of dissolved air in water. We also present a new technique to obtain the acoustic pressure (Pa) and ambient radius (R0) parameters, based on the information provided by the timing of the flashes in the acoustic cycle. Using this technique we give phase diagrams of the bubble in the (R0,Pa) and (Pa, gas concentration) space, and discuss the parametric dependence of the light intensity. The resulting power-law dependence of the relative intensity normalized by the ambient volume of the bubble on the expansion ratio indicates that more extreme conditions are attainable inside a bubble at dissolved air concentration of 15 mmHg than at 150 mmHg.

Applications of information technology and systems engineering in the management of protected areas range from simple 'off the shelf project management and work scheduling software, to complex bespoke distributed management systems in which project management is just one element of an integrated IT system encompassing virtually every function (including administration and finance) of a large organisation. The Countryside Management System is a relatively successful system conceived 'bottom up' as a modest experiment by site managers to solve their immediate problems of project control but has significant limitations. The National Trust's Property Management and Information System in the UK is, by contrast, the most ambitious attempt to date of any conservation organisation to computerise its activities and was abandoned prior to full implementation. It seems likely to be some time before the full potential of information technologies such as Geographical Information systems can be harnessed to the management of protected sites and landscapes, yet it is a promising prospect.

This paper proposes a strategy for analyzing unknown, filled forms. First, horizontal and vertical line segments are detected, extracted and filtered. A recursive splitting and merging algorithm eliminates overlapping segments, filters false segments, and groups the segments into lines. Based on the extracted lines, an algorithm for rectangle extraction is proposed. We define the constraints between rectangles and edges. In a process of scanning the horizontal and vertical lines, candidate edges are validated and rectangles are generated if its surrounding edges and their combination are all valid. The process is recursively applied. It can tolerate large breaks in form lines, ignore irrelevant segments and deal with embedded rectangles. Experiments on a collection of forms show that our approach works well on poor quality images.

Currently, many multimedia or continuous media server system is under development on top of either workstations or high-end PCs clustered with high speed networking facilities. In this paper we introduce Crown, a continuous media server on clustered high performance PCs with Myrinet, fast network switching equipment, and then address CrownFS, a file system on top of Crown, to offer continuous media streams to many subscribers at the same time. For easy and rapid tuning of the performance of CrownFS, we prototyped it. Prototyping requires less efforts and costs than direct implementation. Also, more reliable system optimization is obtainable rather than simulation. By using the prototype, we measured the scalability of CrownFS according to disk access strategies.

Recent progress in network technologies has made it possible to integrate digital video and audio into distributed computing environments. Among the various distributed multimedia applications, video-on-demand (VOD) services are the most typical application area. However, interest in large-scale VOD systems is gradually transferring to small and low-cost VOD systems because of the excess investment required in the transmission media. When we make a small-scale VOD system, one of the most important factors is the efficient resource management of the VOD server in order to achieve cost-effectiveness. Thus, multimedia has generated widespread interest in real-time and high-performance I/O support within general-purpose operating systems. This paper presents the performance of a small-scale, UNIX-based VOD server equipped with a real-time scheduler and a continuous media file system (CMFS). The real-time scheduler is based on the theory of non-preemptive real-time systems to test schedulability within polynomial time. To reduce interference of the interrupt processing for the real-time processes, the processes are classified into two groups in order of importance. The CMFS has been designed and implemented to acquire the performance of the raw disk. According to the analysis of the measured data, UNIX can efficiently transfer video data from disk to network and it can also guarantee most deadlines.

Printed circuit board layout inspection methods are mostly based on local geometric information, therefore they are well suited to the cellular neural networks (CNN) paradigm. The wire break, the wire and isolation width violation and an "H" type short circuits detector analogic algorithms were tested on a 20*22 CNN Universal Machine (CNNUM) chip working in the CNN Chip Prototyping System (CCPS) and on the CNN Engine Board (CNNEB), and the results were compared to the commercially available inspection systems.

In order to generate local addresses for an array section A(l:h:s) with block-cyclic distribution, an efficient compiling method is required. In this paper, two local address generation methods for the block-cyclic distribution are presented. One is a simple local address generation method that is modified from the virtual-block scheme. The other is a linear-time /spl Delta/M table construction method. The array elements of A(l:h:s) to be accessed at run-time build up a family of lines. By using the equation of the lines, a /spl Delta/M table can be generated in O(k) time. Experimental results show that a simple local address generation method has poor performance but a linear-time /spl Delta/M table generation method is faster than other algorithms in /spl Delta/M table generation time and access time for 10,000 array elements.

We analyze the structure of the class of discrete-time linear stochastic systems in terms of the geometric theory of stochastic realization. We discuss the role of invariant directions, zeros of spectral factors and output-induced subspaces in determining the systems-theoretical properties of the stochastic systems. A prototype interpolation problem for recovering lost state information is discussed and it is shown how it can be solved via Kalman filtering recursions tying together the state processes of a family of totally ordered splitting subspaces.
