As of today, research in vulnerable road users (VRUs) applications is mainly focused on safety in urban road scenarios. There is little to be found in the literature with respect to VRUs in mountain areas, where mountain biking and hiking also present risks of collision. Here, it is not yet clear whether existing localization and communication technologies would provide sufficient performance in such harsh environments. In this work, we start answering this question by presenting the results of a measurement campaign which took place in a mountain area in Northern Italy during Summer 2024. With respect to localization, we show that global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based localization alone often provides unreliable results due to vegetation and terrain. Trilateration with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and beacons mounted at fixed positions performs well in some circumstances and can be used to enhance GNSS, however, we also observed many unclear effects that require further investigations. Concerning communication, the results indicate that both direct short range communications (DSRC) and cellular V2X (C-V2X) works fairly well in most cases, but terrain characteristics might induce packet losses or low signal quality, whereas instabilities in GNSS fixes might also cause C-V2X outages.

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors

This article introduces Follow-Me AI, a concept designed to enhance user interactions with smart environments, optimize energy use, and provide better control over data captured by these environments. Through AI agents that accompany users, Follow-Me AI negotiates data management based on user consent, aligns environmental controls as well as user communication and computes resources available in the environment with user preferences, and predicts user behavior to proactively adjust the smart environment. The manuscript illustrates this concept with a detailed example of Follow-Me AI in a smart campus setting, detailing the interactions with the building's management system for optimal comfort and efficiency. This paper presents a unified approach for repre-senting multiple domains alongside production in cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) through domain-specific languages (DSLs). The approach is illustrated using material flows (MFs) as an example. The paper identifies requirements for DSLs in CPPSs and MFs, including concurrency, synchronization, constraints, and heterogeneity support. Subsequently, a plugin system is in-troduced for the existing Production Flow Description Language (PFDL), which allows users to incorporate additional domain-specific functionality in the form of plugins. To demonstrate this approach, we present the MF plugin, resulting in the combined PFDLMF. This showcases the reusability of such an approach and the easy integration of new CPPS domains. We envision the convergence of the PFDL with plugins towards a unified flow description language for CPPSs. A practical CPPS use-case demonstrates the expressiveness of the PFDLMF in modeling and executing complex MFs in an agent-based architecture.

The Internet of Things (IoT) detects context through sensors capturing data from dynamic physical environments, in order to inform automation decisions within cyber physical systems (CPS). Diverse types of uncertainty in the IoT pipeline can propagate within and across nodes, involving complex interactions with security, privacy, and trust that remain largely unexplored. This paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the types of uncertainties in IoT and how they propagate within IoT nodes and networks. We consider adversarial uncertainty in the context of distributed IoT networks to capture perturbations due to malicious actors in the network that can influence IoT security, privacy and trust. We examine the propagation of adversarial uncertainty and well-known uncertainty types, namely aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty, within the five distinct stages of sensing, communication, storage, processing and decision-making in an IoT pipeline, across network layer boundaries, and across nodes within an IoT network. Using this mapping, we analyse the interactions between the uncertainty types and their propagation, and security, privacy, and trust in IoT. Based on this analysis, we discuss guidelines and considerations for mitigating uncertainty in IoT through a smart grid use case study. © The Author(s) 2024.

Reliable internet access is a key enabler for economic growth. Although the Philippine government launched initiatives to improve connectivity, connection speeds remained below the global average, especially for mobile networks. This paper presents Hotspotter, a system that aims to aid implementers and stakeholders in quantifying and addressing network coverage issues. Hotspotter is an incentivized crowdsensing system that collects, maps, and visualizes WiFi and cellular data to pinpoint hotspots and dead zones for the effective deployment and relocation of WiFi access points. A mobile application for Android was developed to facilitate data collection on geolocation, nearby WiFi access points, and connected cellular networks. The user interface visualizes the aggregated data in a hexagon-grid map. Fieldwork was conducted in two sitios of Barangay San Lorenzo, Norzagaray, Bulacan to stress-test the Hotspotter system in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA). It was found that 2G and 4G had the widest coverage and strongest signals overall, with modal signal strengths of 4.0 and 3.0, respectively. Being at the cutting edge, 5G was not yet supported. In the end, the mobile application’s passive sensing, collecting, and caching of data successfully operated even in the most isolated areas without an internet connection.

This work presents a simulation framework for CAN communication including attacks, with a particular focus on bus-off and WeepingCAN attacks. The simulation is validated against existing experiments, demonstrating its accuracy in replicating attack scenarios proposed by Cho et al. [11] and Bloom [2]. An intrusion detection system (IDS) is evaluated using the Hacking and Countermeasures Research Lab (HCRL) data set, and limitations in detecting WeepingCAN attacks are identified. To address these limitations, an extension to the IDS is proposed that incorporates an error frequency criterion to improve detection accuracy. The extended IDS is evaluated in different environments, demonstrating its effectiveness in reliably distinguishing between normal communications and WeepingCAN attacks. Overall, this work contributes to the understanding and detection of sophisticated attacks on CAN and and offers support to develop and evaluate further detection mechanisms.

Fuzzy data processing enables data enrichment and increases data interpretation in industrial environments. In the cloud-based IoT data ingestion pipelines, fuzzy data processing can be implemented in several locations, closer to the IoT events gateways, stream processors, or the persistence layer before the data is visualized. Since Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)-enabled manufacturing can produce vast amounts of data, the decision on the placement of the fuzzy data processing can be important for secondary processes performed on the enriched data, like the predictive maintenance inferencing. In this paper, we analyze two locations of fuzzy data processing in the cloud-based environment built for monitoring AGVs in smart factories - by formulating fuzzy queries against data streams on stream processing units and data at rest in a database. The querying scenarios cover fuzzy filtering with simple and complex criteria, fuzzy filtering through assignment to a linguistic variable, and joining data streams by representing joining attributes as fuzzy numbers. The experimental results show that querying the data stream can be more efficient and profitable in the scalable environment of many AGVs. However, the enrichment provided for the data at rest is also beneficial when gathering data for building future predictive maintenance models. © 2024 IEEE.

In today's world, smart factories are a coexisting element of smarticizing cities. Smart manufacturing of today relies on the automation of many component tasks of the production process. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that transport materials on the production lines are important elements of this automation. Appropriate management of a fleet of AGVs requires avoiding collisions. However, prediction and early detection of approaching collision points on the transportation routes not only prevent collisions but also enables adjusting the AGV operation and improving its flow. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of fuzzy sets and linguistic variables in collision prevention by processing AGV data streams with Apache Kafka. We extend the capabilities of Apache Kafka and ksqlDB towards fuzzy stream processing and use fuzzy KSQL queries to predict collisions. Our experiments prove that fuzzy querying against AGV data streams does not consume much time and computational resources, and we can successfully avoid collisions by predicting future positions of the AGV for various densities of data streams and widths of time windows. © 2023 IEEE.

An Improvement Heuristic Based on Variable Neighborhood Search for Dynamic Orienteering Problems with Changing Node Values and Changing Budgets

We study the Dynamic Orienteering Problem (DOP) with changing node values and changing budgets. It is a complex combinatorial optimization problem with many applications, e.g., in tour planning. To solve the DOP, an improvement heuristic based on Variable Neighborhood Search VNS _DOP is proposed. In addition, three methods for handling solutions that became invalid by budget changes are presented. Heuristic VNS _DOP is experimentally compared with two improvement heuristics based on state-of-the-art algorithms for the static Orienteering Problem. In addition, the influence of the three invalid solution handling methods on the algorithms’ optimization behavior is evaluated experimentally. For the experiments, benchmark instances as well as instances generated from existing road networks are used. As a quality measure for the algorithms, their performance over time is used. The results show that both types of dynamic changes, i.e., changes in the node values and changes in the budget, lead to higher volatility in the results for all compared algorithms. However, the latter type has a more negative effect on the performance. Out of the compared algorithms, the proposed heuristic VNS _DOP obtains the best results in most cases on a variety of problem instances with dynamic node values and dynamic budgets, showing that it has a high performance over time in dynamic environments and is able to deal with different levels of dynamic changes. For DOPs with changing budgets, the invalid solution handling method that repairs solutions by fixing the violation of the budget constraint as fast as possible performs best for the considered algorithms. © 2022, The Author(s).
