In present paper, a general CO2 emission estimation approach is developed by means of a large range of open data as predictions. Such open data are related to human activity regarding services and (socio-economic) conditions arising in a given (urban) area. The proposed model focuses on fine-scale prediction to better understand the dynamics of emissions via machine (or deep) learning approaches and taking into account an innovative study based on open data sources including city services. The goal is to understand how specific predictors can contribute to or mitigate CO2 emissions in the observed area. To this end, the impact of several features has been analyzed in order to identify the key factors influencing emissions. Thus, a formal study has been conducted to perform feature relevance analysis by using eXplainable AI (XAI) approach. The proposed model is useful to define targeted policies reducing the pollutant impact of cities, promote a more ecologically sustainable urban lifestyle and improve sustainable urban planning. Both solution and model have been improved to be more flexible by using transfer learning techniques. This study and its related results have been produced and validated by exploiting the Snap4City framework for smart city, mobility and transport and data analytics. In particular, such results deal with the metropolitan cities of Florence and Bologna. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Macroscopic GA-based Multi-Objective Traffic Light Optimization prioritizing tramways

Urban traffic congestion significantly impacts city efficiency, environmental quality, public safety, and overall quality of life. The primary objective of this research has been to develop traffic light optimization strategies to reduce congestion in areas where tramways or high-speed buses need priority. To this end, a novel approach is presented in this paper as a Genetic Algorithm-based Multi-Objective Traffic Light Optimization (MaMoTLO). It takes into account multiple factors such as minimizing stops, reducing travel and waiting times (private and public), and ensures the synchronizations. This approach is particularly useful in urban areas where multiple tramways intersect with regular traffic, creating potential bottlenecks for private flows. The main innovative aspects are the insertion of structural constraints on flow and queues are junctions, the insertion of penalty constraint for the tramways passage, the capability of working at macroscale of the solution, the validation against real conditions, and the comparison with a large set of solutions. The work presented compares the new optimization strategies with existing state-of-the-art methods, including those based on Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II/III), Simulation of Urban MObility) (SUMO) Actuated solutions, and Webster's formula for traffic light timing. The proposed solutions have been tested using real traffic data from Florence, Italy, and simulated scenarios to measure their effectiveness in reducing congestion and improving traffic flow on Snap4City open platform. The findings indicate that selected MaMoTLO solutions substantially outperform state-of-the-art methods by providing more balanced and efficient traffic light solutions (presenting improvement of 10 % or higher in real conditions), which is crucial for urban areas with high tramway traffic. The proposed optimization improves the flow of vehicular traffic and ensures that public transportation systems like tramways

Smart Cities are becoming proactive environments in which municipalities are engaging stakeholders in contributing and participating to the life of the smart city and to the development and updating of the smart solutions in the infrastructure. To this end, the methodologies and tools for Smart City Living lab start up, management and life cycling are becoming relevant. In this document, the solution developed for Snap4City project is described. Snap4City has been developed on the basis of Km4City tools for supporting Living lab in response to the competitive call of Select4Cities European commission project directed by three major cities in Europe: Helsinki, Antwerp and Copenhagen. The proposed Snap4City solution includes a IOT/IOE development model, a life cycle and a set of tools for data collection, data sharing, processes and analytics development, collection and management, and sharing. —In computer vision, image datasets used for classification are naturally associated with multiple labels and comprised of multiple views, because each image may contain several objects (e.g. pedestrian, bicycle and tree) and is properly characterized by multiple visual features (e.g. color, texture and shape). Currently available tools ignore either the label relationship or the view complementary. Motivated by the success of the vector-valued function that constructs matrix-valued kernels to explore the multi-label structure in the output space, we introduce multi-view vector-valued manifold regularization (MV3MR) to integrate multiple features. MV3MR exploits the complementary property of different features and discovers the intrinsic local geometry of the compact support shared by different features under the theme of manifold regularization. We conducted extensive experiments on two challenging, but popular datasets, PASCAL VOC’ 07 (VOC) and MIR Flickr (MIR), and validated the effectiveness of the proposed MV3MR for image classification. RDF stores may be used to set up knowledge bases integrating heterogeneous information for web and mobile applications to use the data for new advanced services to citizens and city administrators, thus exploiting inferential capabilities, temporal and spatial reasoning, and text indexing. In this paper, the needs and constraints for RDF stores to be used for smart cities services, together with the currently available RDF stores are evaluated. The assessment model allows a full understanding of whether they are suitable as a basis for Smart City modeling and application. The comparison of the RDF stores addressed a number of well-known RDF stores. The paper also reports the adoption of the proposed Smart City RDF Benchmark on the basis of Florence Smart City model, data sets and tools accessible as Km4City http://***, and adopted in the European Commission international smart city projects named RESOLUTE H2020, REPLICATE H2020, and in Sii-Mobility National Smart City project in Italy.

Smart Cloud Engine and Solution Based on Knowledge Base

Complexity of cloud infrastructures needs models and tools for process management, configuration, scaling, elastic computing and healthiness control. This paper presents a Smart Cloud solution based on a Knowledge Base, KB, with the aim of modeling cloud resources, Service Level Agreements and their evolution, and enabling the reasoning on structures by implementing strategies of efficient smart cloud management and intelligence. The solution proposed provides formal verification tools and intelligence for cloud control. It can be easily integrated with any cloud configuration manager, cloud orchestrator, and monitoring tool, since the connections with these tools are performed by using REST calls and XML files. It has been validated in the large ICARO Cloud project with a national cloud service provider.

Large and complex infrastructures as industry plants and hospitals are vulnerable to natural, man-made disasters, and causality events. In this paper, we present a solution addressing the guiding personnel during maintenance and/or emergency conditions. The aim is to reduce the time needed to react and to cope with organization and maintenance support, while facilitating communication, and indoor / outdoor navigation. The solution is based on the formalization of protocol, the modelling of knowledge for navigation, the algorithms and the development of a mobile application and corresponding server device for integrated indoor/outdoor navigation. The navigation algorithms are based on low costs mobile sensors and Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter. The solution has been validated and tried out within a large medical infrastructure, thus demonstrating the validity of the identified modalities and procedures, measuring the advantage from both qualitative and quantitative aspects. The indoor navigation solution has been compared with other former solutions based on classical Kalman and dead reckoning. © 2014 by Knowledge systems Institute Graduate School.

A number of accessible RDF stores are populating the linked open data world. The navigation on data reticular relationships is becoming every day more relevant. Several knowledge base present relevant links to common vocabularies while many others are going to be discovered increasing the reasoning capabilities of our knowledge base applications. In this paper, the Linked Open Graph, LOG, is presented. It is a web tool for collaborative browsing and navigation on multiple SPARQL entry points. The paper presented an overview of major problems to be addressed, a comparison with the state of the arts tools, and some details about the LOG graph computation to cope with high complexity of large Linked Open Dada graphs. The *** tool is also presented by means of a set of examples involving multiple RDF stores and putting in evidence the new provided features and advantages using dbPedia, Getty, Europeana, Geonames, etc. The LOG tool is free to be used, and it has been adopted, developed and/or improved in multiple projects: such as ECLAP for social media cultural heritage, Sii- Mobility for smart city, and ICARO for cloud ontology analysis, OSIM for competence / knowledge mining and analysis. © 2014 by Knowledge systems Institute Graduate School.

Linked Open Data (LOD) is a new way of sharing information about digital/physical resources allowing connected computers to better use information related with the resources. LOD allows to enrich information about resources possibly improving the user experience when using the resources or on finding them. This paper presents the experience in publishing as linked data the information which is present on ECLAP portal about multimedia content on performing arts. The system provides access to information about content, the terms of the taxonomy used to classify the content and also structural information like connections with groups managing the content, use in playlists and collections. Moreover information about annotations on audio/visual content is provided and also information about users is available (e.g., the 'friends' graph). The enrichments made on geographical information present in the content metadata (e.g., city/country of the performance) allowed to link content with the GeoNames database that is available as liked data. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Multimedia services need to be supported by content, metadata and workflow management systems to efficiently manage huge amount of content items and metadata production as in the case of cultural institutions. Online digital libraries and cultural heritage institutions and the other portals of publishers need an integrated multimedia back office in order to aggregate content and provide them to national and international aggregators. Different technologies need to be integrated to improve existing content management and workflow systems in order to efficiently organize and manage large amount of data and processes to cope with them. The aim of this paper is to formalise and discuss about requirements, design and validation of an institutional aggregator for metadata and content, coping with IPR models for providing content towards Europeana, the European international aggregator. ECLAP, the European Collected Library of Artistic Performance, has been realised respecting all these features and taking into account the problems connected to the cultural heritage cross media content on Performing Arts domain. In order to establish the quality of the institutional services and tools for content described, a set of measures have been made and reported. © 2013 by Knowledge systems Institute Graduate School.
