Problem solving environments are an attractive approach to the integration of calculation and management tools for various scientific and engineering applications. These applications often require high performance computing components in order to be computationally feasible. It is therefore a challenge to construct integration technology, suitable for problem solving environments, that allows both flexibility as well as the embedding of parallel and high performance computing systems. Our DISCWorld system is designed to meet these needs and provides a Java-based middleware to integrate component applications across wide-area networks. Key features of our design are the abilities to: access remotely stored data; compose complex processing requests either graphically or through a scripting language; execute components on heterogeneous and remote platforms; reconfigure task subgraphs to run across multiple servers. Operators in task graphs can be slow (but portable) pure Java implementations or wrappers to fast (platform specific) supercomputer implementations.

Digital libraries and other large archives of electronically retrievable and manipulable material are becoming widespread in both commercial and scientific arenas. Advances in networking technologies have led to a greater proliferation of wide area distributed data warehousing with associated data management challenges. We review tools and technologies for supporting distributed online data archives and explain our key concept of "active" data archives, in which data can be processed on-demand prior to delivery. We are developing wide-area data warehousing software infrastructure for geographically distributed archives of large scientific data sets, such as satellite image data, that are stored hierarchically on disk arrays and tape silos and are accessed by a variety of scientific and decision support applications. Interoperability is a major issue for distributed data archives and requires standards for server interfaces and metadata. We review present activities and our contributions in developing such standards for different application areas.

Middleware has emerged as an important architectural component in modern distributed systems. Most recently, industry has witnessed the emergence of component-based middleware platforms, such as Enterprise JavaBeans and the CORBA Component Model, aimed at supporting third party development, configuration and subsequent deployment of software. The goal of our research is to extend this work in order to exploit the benefits of component-based approaches within the middleware platform as well as on top of the platform, the result being more configurable and reconfigurable middleware technologies. This is achieved through a marriage of components with reflection, the latter providing the necessary levels of openness to access the underlying component infrastructure. More specifically, the paper describes in detail the OpenCOM component model, a lightweight and efficient component model based on COM. The paper also describes how OpenCOM can be used to construct a full middleware platform, and also investigates the performance of both OpenCOM and this resultant platform. The main overall contribution of the paper is to demonstrate that flexible middleware technologies can be developed without an adverse effect on the performance of resultant systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper presents a novel wireless access point architecture designed to support the development of next generation mobile context-aware applications over metropolitan scale areas. In addition, once deployed, this network will allow ordinary citizens secure, accountable and convenient access to the Internet from their local city and campus environments. The proposed architecture is based on an approach utilising a modified Mobile IPv6 protocol stack that uses packet marking and network level packet filtering at the edge of the wired network to achieve this objective. The paper describes this architecture in detail and contrasts it with existing systems to highlight the key benefits of our approach. © 2001 ACM.

An emerging model for computational grids interconnects similar multi-resource servers from distributed sites. A job submitted to the grid can be executed by any of the servers; however, resource size or balance may be different across servers. One approach to resource management for this grid is to layer a global load distribution system on top of the local job management systems at each site. Unfortunately, classical load distribution policies fail on two aspects when applied to a multi-resource server grid First, simple load indices may not recognize that a resource imbalance exists at a server. Second, classical job selection policies do not actively correct such a resource-imbalanced state. We show through simulation that new policies based on resource balancing perform consistently better than the classical load distribution strategies.

Middleware technologies such as CORBA or Java RMI have proved their suitability for "standard" client-server applications. However, challenges from existing and new types of applications, including support for multimedia real-time requirements and mobility seems to indicate the need for defining a new architecture for open distributed systems. The new architecture should be designed from the beginning with flexibility and adaptability in mind. This can be achieved by defining an open engineering middleware platform that is run time configurable and allows inspection and adaptation of the underlying components. This paper proposes a next generation middleware architecture that conforms to requirements as indicated above. This architecture is characterised by being open, and adaptable based on the principle of reflection. The paper also reports on some existing research prototypes with a focus towards their suitability as next generation middleware. © 1999 IEEE.

Efficient and robust metacomputing requires the decomposition of complex jobs into tasks that must be scheduled on distributed processing nodes. There are various ways of creating a schedule and implementing it efficiently, depending upon global system state knowledge. Many computations may be structured as process networks, where data is either pushed from the source node to the target node where it will be used, or is pulled from source to target at the instigation of the target. We have developed a metacomputing infrastructure to investigate this idea, which employs the concept of a rich data pointer, the DISCWorld Remote Access Mechanism (DRAM), which can point to either data or services, and can be traded in a client/multiple-server model. We present an extension of the DRAM concept and implementation to represent and describe data that has not yet been created, the "DRAM Future" (DRAMF). We show how the use of the DRAMF facilitates efficient metacomputing scheduling and runtime optimisation on high performance distributed systems. We present a recursive algorithm for determining the optimal placement of a job's components in the presence of partial system state information. This algorithm uses only a selected subset of all available processing nodes, and we implement it using DRAMFs. There are many research issues to consider when designing a robust and general algorithm for scheduling and process placement on distributed systems. We address some of these issues in our distributed Information Systems Control World project[6] as do other research projects[2].

The authors present a metacomputing application of multivariate, nonhierarchical statistical clustering to geographic environmental data from the 48 conterminous United States in order to produce maps of regions of ecological similarity, called ecoregions. These maps represent finer scale regionalizations than do those generated by the traditional technique: an expert with a marker pen. Several variables (e.g., temperature, organic matter, rainfall etc.) thought to affect the growth of vegetation are clustered at resolutions as fine as one square kilometer (1 km2). These data can represent over 7.8 million map cells in an n-dimensional (n = 9 to 25) data space. A parallel version of the iterative statistical clustering algorithm is developed by the authors using the MPI (Message Passing Interface) message passing routines. The parallel algorithm uses a classical, self-scheduling, single-program, multiple data (SPMD) organization;performs dynamic load balancing for reasonable performance in heterogeneous metacomputing environments;and provides fault tolerance by saving intermediate results for easy restarts in case of hardware failure. The parallel algorithm was tested on various geographically distributed heterogeneous metacomputing configurations involving an IBM SP3™, an IBM SP2™, and two SGI Origin 2000™'s. The tests were performed with minimal code modification, and were made possible by Globus™ (a metacomputing software toolkit) and the Globus-enabled version of MPI (MPICH-G). Our performance tests indicate that while the algorithm works reasonably well under the metacomputing environment for a moderate number of processors, the communication overhead can become prohibitive for large processor configurations. © 1999 IEEE.

NYNET (ATM wide-area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS) is a multithreaded message-passing tool developed at Syracuse University that provides low-latency and high-throughput communication services over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based high-performance distributed computing (HPDC) environments. NCS provides flexible and scalable group communication services based on dynamic grouping and tree-based multicasting. The NCS architecture, which separates the data and control functions, allows group operations to be implemented efficiently by utilizing the control connections when transferring status information (e.g. topology information, routing information). Furthermore, NCS provides several different algorithms for group communication and allows programmers to select an appropriate algorithm at runtime. The authors overview the general architecture of NCS and present the multicasting services provided by NCS. They analyze and compare the performance of NCS with that of other message-passing tools such as p4, PVM, and MPI in terms of primitive performance and performance.
