The goal of this paper is to review the first projects for building automatic computing machines during the first half of the 20th century. The presented timeline shows that 85 years ago - in October 1939 - the first breadboard proof-of-concept prototype of an electronic digital computer became operational. The credit for this revolutionary invention goes to John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State College. Using fresh insights and some nearly forgotten facts, we also review the origins of the IEEE computer Society and the role of organized professional activities, as well as the customer demand for spreading new ideas and design solutions for the fast-growing computer industry. The paper recognizes and explains the contribution of John Vincent Atanasoff to the invention and early development of electronic digital computing and the design of the modern computers that changed the world. © 2024 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. An Efficient Multi-band Infrared Small Objects Detection Approach for Low-Altitude Artificial Intelligence of Thing

As a cutting-edge technology of low-altitude Artificial Intelligence of Thing (AIoT), UAV object detection significantly enhances the surveillance services capabilities of low-altitude AIoT. However, the difficulty of object detection is exacerbated by the high proportion of small and obscure objects in the captured images. To address the mentioned challenges, we present an efficient multi-band infrared small object detection approach for low-altitude intelligent surveillance services. Firstly, we propose the Multi-band infrared Image Fusion algorithm based on Cascade-GAN (MIF-CGAN), which produces fused images with high information entropy and high contrast. Then, the Transformer-based Multi-scale Dense Small Object Detection (MsDSOD) algorithm is proposed. The algorithm consists of the Global-Local Object Detection (G-LOD) network, the Object Dense Area Extraction (O-DAE) module, and the Weighted Boxes Fusion (WBF) module. It extracts small objects features at different scales from infrared images and fuses the global and local detection results to accurately identify small objects in dense scenes. Furthermore, compared to the traditional algorithms, the mean Average Precision (mAP) of MsDSOD is improved by 0.80% and the Average Precision in small object detection (APs) is improved by 0.72%. The proposed algorithm is optimally suited to deal with complex scenes with dense small objects and background occlusion. © 2014 IEEE.

The pioneering research on message passing for Java (MPJ) which started after 1995 provided a crucially important framework and programming environment for parallel and distributed computing with Java. This framework resulted in an industry standard specification and a novel MPJ-based hierarchical development methodology for a new generation of large-scale distributed systems. The invention of a novel component-based model and methodology for rapid distributed software development and execution based on the MPJ work and achievements are the core contributions presented in this paper. Based on the high-performance Java component-based model, concepts and research results, grid, cloud, and extreme-scale computing represent a fundamental shift in the delivery of information technology services that has permanently changed the computing landscape.

For a long time engineering design has relied on human engineers manually crafting and refining designs using their expertise and experience. In Bio-inspired Evolutionary Development (EvoDevo), generative algorithms are employed to investigate a broader design space that may go beyond what human engineers have considered. Previous literature has demonstrated the use of quality and diversity (QD) algorithms in evolutionary approaches to drive the process to better quality solutions. This paper provides a study to understand the effects of using QD algorithms in EvoDevo processes for engineering design. This paper also analyses the impact of using different behavioural characterisations (BC) in the performance of the quality of the solutions found. The results demonstrate that quality and diversity algorithms can find better solutions than other EAs for engineering design problems. It was also found that the characterisation of the BC is important to get the best results. © 2024 IEEE.

Material flow analysis (MFA) is the main methodology to assess material flow circularity. It is essentially a data-analysis-based approach whose physical foundations consist of conservation of mass. To improve both the accuracy and the repeatability of MFA models, in this paper we leverage compartmental dynamical thermodynamics merged with graph theory and control theory. The key idea is that the thermodynamic compartments and their connections can be added, removed or modified as needed to achieve a circular material flow. Thus, our methodology consists of designing thermodynamical material networks (TMNs). We also provide a physics-based definition of circularity and implement a nonlinear compartmental control, which has been possible since TMNs are highly dynamic models based on differential calculus (i.e. ordinary differential equations) rather than on arithmetic as is typical for MFA models. ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors
