The practice of computing across two or more data centers separated by the Internet is growing in popularity due to an explosion in scalable computing demands and pay-as-you-go schemes offered on the cloud. While cloud-bursting is addressing this process of scaling up and down across data centers (i.e. between private and public clouds), offering service level guarantees, is a challenge for inter-cloud computation, particularly for best-effort traffic and large files. The parallel workload we address is real-time and involves inter-cloud processing and analysis of images and documents. In our production printing domain, dedicated processing/network resources are cost-prohibitive. Further, the problem is exacerbated by data intensive computing - we encounter huge file sizes atypical of intercloud parallel processing. To address these problems we propose three flavors of autonomic cloud-bursting schedulers that offer probabilistic guarantees on service levels required by customers (such as speed-up and queue sequence preservation) by adapting to changing workload characteristics, variation in bandwidth and available resources. In particular, these opportunistic schedulers use a quadratic response surface model for processing time in concert with a time-of-day dependent bandwidth predictor to increase the throughput and utilization while simultaneously reducing out-of-sequence completions for a document processing workload.

This paper has provided a first step towards solid theoretical foundations of large scale distributed systems. It has focused on applying complex systems theories SOC and HOT to data management solutions in P2P grids. It argues that replica management solution over OpenDHT, the state of the art DHT deployment, is based on SOC and consequently achieves robustness even in the presence of churn but not optimal performance.

The abundant computing resources available on the Internet has made grid computing over the Internet a viable solution, to scientific problems. The dynamic nature of the Internet necessitates dynamic reconfigurability of applications to handle failures and varying loads. Most of the existing grid solutions handle reconfigurability to a limited extent. These systems lack appropriate support to handle the failure of key-components, like coordinators, essential for the computational model. We propose a two layered peer-to-peer middleware, Vishwa, to handle reconfiguration of the application in the face of failure and system load. The two-layers, task management layer and reconfiguration layer, are used in conjunction by the applications to adapt and mask node failures. We show that our system is able to handle the failures of the key-components of a computation model. This is demonstrated in the case studies of two computational models, namely bag of tasks and connected problems, with an appropriate example for each

Real-time distributed collaboration applications are characterized by close co-operation among processes. Concurrency control and timeliness of the response are essential requirements for such applications. As mobile systems are characterized by frequent disconnections and physical mobility from one cell to another providing real-time distributed collaboration for mobile systems is a real challenge. In this paper, we propose a framework for concurrency control in real-time distributed collaboration applications for mobile systems. We view mobile systems as a three-tier architecture and propose a data-centric framework for optimistic concurrency control. The framework is built on top of a totally ordered exactly-once multicast protocol. Our model ensures that number of messages on the wired network is independent of the number of mobile hosts in the system. We have implemented and tested our framework by developing a collaborative text editor application over exactly-once multicast protocol.

Concurrency control (CC) algorithms targeted at Web systems need to be different from those of traditional transactional processing systems. In Web systems, transactions could be generated in a burst mode, leading to scalability problems at the server. Transactions may also suffer from network delays due to the unpredictable response time over the Web. This paper proposes a CC mechanism for Web-based three tier systems. In this mechanism, initial validation of the transactions is performed at the application server. The transactions that pass the initial validation are sent to the database server (DB server) for final validation. The serializability criterion is achieved by associating a data-counter with each data-item. This reduces the load on the DB server. Also, in the proposed model, the middle tier contains multiple number of application servers. Apart of the database is dynamically replicated in these servers. The modifications made on the data-items are known immediately to clients and the data-items at the DB server are locked only during the final validation phase and write phase. Consequently, the model is also suitable for transactions that suffer from unpredictable delays between read and write operations. The model is scalable as it can support large number of application servers in the middle tier. Performance studies have been carried out to depict the efficiency of the proposed model over the existing models. The proposed model is simple to implement and it performs extremely well compared to existing models when the transactions are generated in a burst mode.

Estimating different characteristics viz., size, cost, etc. of software during different phases of software development is required to manage the resources effectively. Function points measure can be used as an input to estimate these characteristics of software. The Traditional Function Point Counting Procedure (TFPCP) can not be used to measure the functionality of an object Oriented (OO) system. This paper suggests a counting procedure to measure the functionality of an OO system during the design phase from a designers' perspective. It is adapted from the TFPCP. The main aim of this paper is to use all the available information during the OO design phase to estimate object Oriented Design Function Points (OODFP). The novel feature of this approach is that it considers all the basic concepts of OO systems such as inheritance, aggregation, association and polymorphism.

Patterns are a means for capturing experience in solving general problems. They give general solutions to common and recurring problems. They exist at various phases of the software development life-cycle (SDLC), namely the analysis phase, the design phase, the coding phase and the testing phase. Patterns in each phase are identified independently. It is possible for the patterns of one phase to be related to patterns in other phases. This paper proposes pattern mapping to inter-relate the patterns of various phases in SDLC to address this issue. It is advantageous to capture the related patterns of different phases as a single unit for software development. Reusable integrated components (ICs) of patterns are proposed to capture the related patterns. A software IC is a group of inter-related patterns, that gives solutions for a recurring problem at various phases of SDLC. A representation mechanism for ICs is presented using the URA (Unified Representation of an Artifact) model, which captures the software development process. Also, this paper proposes a software development process that is based on reusable ICs of patterns. The representation of a software project developed using ICs is also discussed.

The successful use of interoperable database technology in major applications has not been widespread to date. This situation is rapidly changing to one where applications commonly share data resources and isolated application/data pairs may soon be the exception. The move to these applications with interoperable database systems is irresistible for a variety of reasons: corporate data, which has been accumulated across global corporate operations on various incompatible systems, is now recognized as a strategic asset; there is a growing willingness by competing information system vendors to cooperate; the emergence of OSI as a useful tool may mean that communication aspects of computers can be viewed as a commodity; and dramatic changes in the world-wide telecommunications fabric will be seen in the 1990s. MCC has a project called Carnot that is doing the research necessary to develop tool that will allow development of open applications that can be tightly integrated with information stored on existing, closed systems. These tools will allow participants to achieve efficient implementations of architectures such as Bellcore's OSCA. The purpose of the Carnot system is to provide for the integration of a variety of resources within an enterprise and ultimately, across global enterprises.< >
