This paper introduces a new approach for determining the direction of arrival (DoA) of a signal with multi-path reflections based on signal spars representation and the Compressive Sensing (CS) algorithms. Employing CS in DoA enables the use of a single-pixel reconfigurable antenna array to detect multipath signals, thus significantly reducing circuit and hardware complexity by utilizing only one common feeding port with a simple circuit interface, thereby lowering footprint and costs. Utilizing a single-pixel programmable antenna array with a mapping of active array elements through biasing diodes, a dynamic aperture with orthogonal manifold paradigms was achieved. The same map would feature various parts of the numerically constructed sensing matrix for CS-DoA. MATLAB was used to model and synthesize both the dynamic aperture measurements and sensing matrix as essential inputs for the presented CS-DoA algorithm. The results confirmed the effectiveness of this innovative algorithm under various noise levels.

Fast Dynamic Time Warping for Temperature Compensation in Guided Waves

The paper discusses Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) based on ultrasonic guided waves for damage detection in structures. Guided waves allow inspection over long distances and inaccessible features, but are also sensitive to changes in environmental and operating conditions (EOC). The focus of this paper is on temperature compensation methods for guided waves. The compensation techniques include Baseline Signal Stretch (BSS), Optimal Baseline Selection (OBS), OBS+BSS, and Dynamic Time-Warping (DTW). In particular, a new, fast approximation of DTW is evaluated and compared with conventional but computationally expensive DTW. The FDTW algorithm utilizes a multilevel approach inspired by graph bisection principles to achieve precise warping path determination with linear computational complexity. The study evaluates the compensation performance of FDTW using a single baseline at a single temperature, thus addressing the complexity and inaccessibility issues of obtaining an extensive database of baseline signals in practical applications. The Open Guided Wave (OGW) dataset is employed for a fair comparison with other compensation methods. Results indicate that FDTW performs well, demonstrating comparable warping performance to DTW but with significantly reduced computational complexity. The analysis also includes comparisons with BSS, OBS+BSS, and DTW across a range of temperatures, highlighting the effectiveness of FDTW in mitigating errors introduced by larger temperature variations. © 2024 The Authors.

This article presents, for the first time, the end-to-end transmission of physiological data from implanted antennas mimicking sensors to a cloud-enabled aggregator device using fat intra-body communication (fat-IBC). The experiment was performed on a live porcine model in full accordance with ethical standards. Measurement data from two different sensors were collected and sent through a fat-IBC network. The fat-IBC network consisted of three nodes, of which two used antennas implanted in the fat tissue of a live porcine model and one used an on-body antenna placed on the skin. The sensor data was forwarded via Bluetooth Low Energy to an Intel Health Application Platform device, which in turn forwarded the encrypted data to a web server. The experimental results demonstrate that the fat channel can be used in an end-to-end communication scheme, which could involve relaying of sensor data from an implanted device to an external web server.

With recent advancement in NVM technologies, non-volatile main memory(NVMM) has been highlighted as promising systems for large scale data centers. By utilizing memory-mapped IO, researchers have attempted to provide fast IOs without kernel mode switches and complex kernel IO layers. Even though they improve the performance by taking advantage of NVMM characteristics, memory-mapped IOs still require additional user-level logging techniques to guarantee write atomicity and file system integrity. We propose a user-level library file system, Libpubl, which is designed to minimize the write amplification overhead of traditional logging by exploiting persistent user buffers as logs. Libpubl ensures atomic updates of data and improves the performance and the scalability. Compared to the state-of-the-art NVM file systems, Libpubl increases the performance by 50∼120% in Fio benchmark. © 2021 Association for Computing Machinery.

Large scale penetration of wind power to the grid and unevenly spread power demand can result in the transmission system not being able to dispatch all the produced wind power, causing in wind power *** line rating (DLR) is a technology which uses thermal properties of overhead conductors and weather data to determine the real-time ampacity limits of transmission lines. In general, dynamic rating allows extending capacity limits of power lines and helps to remove congestion in the grid.(/p)(p This study looks into the possibility of using dynamic line rating for removing congestion in the power system to allow dispatching more wind power and minimize the need for curtailment. The results of case-studies have shown that DLR allows to significantly reduce the curtailment of generation, especially during winter, when wind production is highest and day time, when the power demand is the highest. © 2020 IEEE.

Congestion control has been considered as a principal technology for efficient end-to-end traffic transmission. Previous studies on congestion control are mainly focused on the control of the transmission rate or window size at the host. However, such host-based congestion controls have difficulties on short time-scale variable network conditions and increased host complexity. To address this problem, network-based congestion controls that utilize network information have been considered which determine and control the congestion using the network information. In this paper, we review the network-based congestion control methods.

Type II Ge clathrate (NaxGe136) films containing a small amount of Na were successfully synthesized on a sapphire substrate by thermal annealing of precursor NaGe composite films. A new technique for Na removal from NaxGe136 was developed by applying the electric field in an Ar environment at 275 C. Rietveld refinement analysis of NaxGe136 films showed an almost guest free nature (Na contents x ∼ 0) using this new technique. In addition, absorbance spectra obtained from NaxGe136 films showed a decrease in the absorbance intensity in the lower photon energy (xGe136 © 2020 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

A novel Butterfly-shaped series-fed circularly polarized phased array antenna integrated with a beamforming board is proposed for a 1U surface (10 cm × 10 cm) of a CubeSat at 86 GHz. The proposed CubeSat beacon will allow a high data rate downlink as well as channel characterization at W-band. Right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) is generated using a new sequentially rotated series-fed radiating element known as the Butterfly antenna. The series-fed Butterfly antenna allows symmetric single plane beam steering with low cross-polarization. A planar array consisting of eight 1 × 24 series-fed Butterfly antenna is designed. The proposed phased array demonstrates a peak simulated RHCP realized gain of 26 dBic and symmetric beam steering of ± 34° in the =0° plane for a 3-dB reduction in the gain. A 4-bit phase shifter design is analyzed and developed on Global Foundries silicon-germanium 9HP technology. Monte-Carlo analyses are also performed to investigate the changes in the radiation patterns caused by random errors in the 4-bit phase shifter and random element failures. The integrated phased array with the beamforming board has been fabricated. The assembly of the phase shifters and the low noise amplifiers are to be done. If completed, the integrated phased array would be measured in the mini-compact anechoic chamber. © 2019 IEEE.

Compressive sensing-based reconstruction of lissajous-like nodding lidar data

In this article, a compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction algorithm is applied to data acquired from a nodding multi-beam Lidar system following a Lissajous-like trajectory. Multi-beam Lidar systems provide 3D depth information of the environment for applications in robotics, but the vertical resolution of these devices may be insufficient to identify objects, especially when the object is small and/or far from the robot. In order to overcome this issue, the Lidar can be nodded in order to obtain higher vertical resolution with the side-effect of increased scan time, especially when raster scan patterns are used. Such systems, especially when combined with nodding, also yield large volumes of data which may be difficult to store and mange on resource constrained systems. Using Lissajous-like nodding trajectories allows for the trade-off between scan time and horizontal and vertical resolutions through the choice of scan parameters. These patterns also naturally sub-sample the imaged area and the data can be further reduced by simply not collecting each data point along the trajectory. The final depth image must then be reconstructed from the sub-sampled data. In this article, a CS reconstruction algorithm is applied to data collected during a fast and therefore low-resolution Lissajous-like scan. Experiments and simulations show the feasibility of this method and compare its results to images produced from simple nearestneighbor interpolation. © 2019 ASME.
