This paper analyzes the performance of a power line carrier communication (PLCC) system under the effect of complex channel gain and additive background noise utilizing quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission scheme. The background noise considered here is complex in nature whose envelope is Nakagami-m distributed while phase follows uniform distribution. The magnitude and phase of complex channel gain coefficients are assumed to have Rayleigh and uniform distribution, respectively. Utilizing the sub-optimal decision rule for the real and imaginary parts of the complex data, and after deriving the expressions for the conditional probability density function (PDF) of the decision variables, we obtain a closed from expression for the conditional symbol error rate (SER) of the QPSK data for the considered system. Further, we analyze the outage performance of the considered PLCC system and derive the expression for conditional outage probability. The derived expressions of SER and outage probability are conditioned on the phase of the complex channel gain and the noise, which has been numerically averaged to get the analytical values for average SER and average outage probability. The analytical results presented in this paper have been verified by the simulations.

The main objective of virtual distributed computing is optimization of load in an efficient manner. This is achieved using load scheduling in cloud computing. The cloud is a virtual distributed environment having a huge set of resources. It offers us an incremental paradigm to obtain effective data transfer among the virtual machines and cloudlets. The paper proposes New Particle Search Optimization (NPSO) based load scheduling approach to obtain cost minimization by processing the cloudlets on VMs. It specifies a meta-heuristic swarm intelligence based approach by storing the best positions. The swarm of particles affects the behavior of the cloudlets. This is achieved using a new cost evaluation function. This paper analyzes the particle swarm optimization and NPSO (New Particle Search Optimization) on a large data set of cloudlets and VMs. The proposed approach provides higher efficiency by cost optimization (minimized cost) based on the statistical analysis of the total cost (execution and transfer) on a data set of number of iterations and particles. © 2017, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Hybrid machining process comprises of applying at least two process components all the while or successively in synergistic way to improve the machining performance. One such machining process is diamond grinding in presence of high frequency electric sparks. This process is all about making trade-off between surface finish and process efficiency. This paper attempts to model the surface roughness using artificial neural network with supervised learning in which back propagation algorithm is used for minimizing error and estimation of adaptive weights. Experimental data for machining of TN20 Russian grade cermet is used for development of neural network.

Gender information using facial patterns serves an important use in various user interaction applications. This paper proposes an approach based on Convolutional Neural Networks to identify gender from faces. The network is trained using back-propagation and Adam optimization. Using convolution operations, performance of proposed CNN network is evaluated on publicly available CASIA face recognition dataset. The proposed network is able to process 640 × 480 pixel face images in a very less time. A combination of convolutional and max pooling layers is used and classification accuracy of 98.5 percent is achieved in just 50 epochs. The results on CASIA benchmark prove that a superior classification performance can be attained by using Convolutional Neural Networks for gender recognition. The accuracy attained is more than earlier methods used for face recognition.

Due to varied applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), data is required by any user when and wherever they require. Usually, base station gathers all information from the sensor and sends it periodically to the user. But for real-time application, mutual authentication among the communicating nodes is required. During user authentication base station checks that the user is authorized to gather the collected information from the sensor node through an insecure channel. In this paper, we propose an efficient authentication scheme which provides anonymity of user in WSNs that uses Markov chain. The Markov chain is a stochastic process that can be used for a system in which it follows a chain of linked events but next event depends only on the current state of the system. Stationary limit distribution of matrix is created by the base station to help the user to keep their password and identity safe. The security analysis verifies that the proposed scheme is safe against various attacks like forgery, parallel session attacks, user impersonation, etc.

The emergence of elastic optical networks (EONs) has been viewed as a solution to the diverse bandwidth requests that will occur in the next generation's network applications and Internet which are anticipated to handle a traffic growth at a rate greater than Petabit per second level. However, the crunch in fiber capacity will persist owing to use of only two dimensions of multiplexing in the EONs. With the adoption of space division multiplexing (SDM), an extra freedom degree can be used such that the EONs will be able support the required capacity of the future diverse traffic. Further, with an increase in the rate(s) of transmission(s), to counter the network failures, there will occur the need for protection mechanisms, specifically those, which can protect routes and provision solutions which are end-to-end. In the current work, as an intial step for protecting an EON based on SDM, we design a strategy which (i) is independent of the failure(s), and (ii) protects the route(s). We evaluate our proposed strategy considering realistic assumptions, topologies and parameters, and for different traffic load values. The obtained simulation results reveal that (i) our proposed strategy is efficient in provisioning of protection which is pre-configured, and (ii) the considered network topology's node degree significantly affects both, the blocking and the evaluated route's length in the protected EON based on SDM.

Software vulnerabilities pose potential security threats to a software. Researchers have been working on the problem of scheduling vulnerabilities and their fixation to minimize the potential risk they present. Vulnerability prioritization is an important step in this direction. Current work in this area focusses on implicit properties of a vulnerability and does not take into account the relative importance and their degree of interdependence. These factors contribute effectively to the decision of vulnerability fixation. In this paper, we consider these factors and propose multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques as a means of vulnerability prioritization. We have used three methods, namely normalized criteria distance (NCD), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) methodology for performing the task of vulnerability prioritization while treating different vulnerability types independent of each other in the first two approaches and showing interdependence in the third approach suggesting a cause–effect theory. We find the priorities of various vulnerability types using these three methods and suggest that the third approach is a more practical solution towards prioritization.

In a Gene Co-expression Network, the same or closely related genes are clustered into co-expressed groups. It is necessary to investigate the role that these genes play as far as some complex diseases like cancer are concerned in those networks. Ranking those genes actually discover the significant candidate genes for various types of cancers. There are several gene ranking algorithms proposed so far that produces the top ranked genes according to their importance with respect to a particular cancer disease. In this work, we apply multi-objective genetic algorithm, Multi-ObjectiveNetworkGA, on a gene coexpression network to find the top ranked cancer mediating genes. The algorithm is applied to publicly available real-life cancer datasets taken from NCBI (National Centre for Biotechnology Information) biological online repository. The performance of the algorithm is justified by classification using SVM classifier with linear kernel and it is compared with state-of-the-art methods on the basis of percentage of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score.

Some Investigations on Hybrid Fuzzy IPD Controllers for Proportional and Derivative Kick Suppression

Proportional and derivative kick i.e., a large change in control action of a proportional plus integral plus derivative （PID） controller due to a sudden change in reference set-point is generally undesired in process industry. Therefore, the structure of conventional parallel PID controller is modified to integral minus proportional derivative （I-PD） controller. In this paper, three hybrid fuzzy IPD controllers such as a fuzzy I-fuzzy PD （FI-FPD） controller and its hybrid combinations with its conventional counterpart such as fuzzy I-PD （FI-PD） and I-fuzzy PD （I-FPD） are presented in view of above industrial problem. These controllers are based upon the counterpart conventional I-PD controller and contains analytical formulae. computer simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of hybrid fuzzy controllers along with conventional I-PD and PID controllers for set-point tracking and disturbance rejection for an induction motor in closed loop using LabVIEWTM environment. The gains of conventional and hybrid fuzzy controllers are tuned using genetic algorithm （GA） for minimum overshoot and settling time. It has been observed that hybrid fuzzy controllers along with the conventional I-PD controller significantly remove the kick from the control action in reference set-point tracking. However, in disturbance rejection, I-PD and FI-PD controllers fail to eliminate the kick from the control signal. In contrast, FI-FPD and I-FPD controllers considerably reduced spikes from the control action in disturbance rejection. Among the conventional and hybrid fuzzy IPD controllers, FI--FPD demonstrates much better set-point tracking and disturbance rejection response with spike free control action.

New grounded immittance simulators employing a single CFCC

In this study, a number of new immittance simulators employing a single current follower current conveyor (CFCC) and three passive components are proposed. First, six new circuit configurations have been introduced which can simulate lossy immittances of different types using a single CFCC along with a canonical number of passive and active components. Subsequently, with a little modification in the hardware of the CFCC, three other new circuits have been introduced which can simulate a variety of lossless immittances without any component matching constraints or requirement of additional active elements. When the passive resistors are replaced with complementary metal - oxide - semiconductor (CMOS) voltage controlled resistors, electronic tunability of the simulated immittances is available in all the cases. Several application examples of some of the proposed simulated immittance circuits have been presented and their workability has been verified using PSPICE simulations based on CFCC implementable in 0.18 μm CMOS technology. © 2017 Institution of engineering and technology.
