Power line communication (PLC) is a term that refers to the transfer of information form transmitter to receiver over electric wires. Power lines are severely effected by background and impulsive noise. In this paper, a suboptimal detection criterion is considered for deriving the error probability under the effect of additive complex background noise and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) symbol points. The envelope of complex background noise is modelled as Nakagami-m distribution. However, the phase of the complex background noise is assumed to follow two different distributions, 1) Uniform distribution and 2) Hoyt distribution. Further, we have evaluated the closed-form expressions of average symbol error rate (SER) for both the cases considered in this paper. The analysis presented in this document closely depicts the effect of background noise on PLC system.

For the efficient filter implementation reconfigura-bility and low power have always been the main concerns. This paper introduces two new low power and high speed reconfigurable parametric equalizer designs. These designs are based on the row bypassing multipliers which are implemented using carry save adder (CSA) and ripple carry adder (RCA). The primary power reduction is procured by turning off adders when the multiplier operands are zero. In addition, the proposed equalizers are implemented with parallel architecture of multipliers to shorten the delay time. The proposed designs can be dynamically reconfigured with erratic coefficients that are only constrained by their order and coefficient world length. These parametric equalizers have been implemented and tested on Vertex-IV field programmable gate array (FPGA) board. The efficacy of the proposed design method is presented with an example. The performance of both the designs is evaluated and compared in terms of area (number of slices), speed, i.e., maximum frequency and power consumption. The results depict that the CSA row bypassing multiplier based parametric equalizer achieves 11% speed enhancement and 18% area reduction in comparison with RCA row bypassing multiplier based parametric equalizer. While the power dissipation of the later equalizer is 5% less than the former one.

The mathematical models used to represent physical processes are generally large and complex. Since simpler models are commonly employed in control, design and analysis, it is required to reduce the order of complex systems. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the performance of four order reduction methods. The computation of the lower order transfer functions is based on balance truncation algorithm, Hankel operator, moment matching and optimization algorithm. To demonstrate the performance of the reduction methods, second and third order transfer functions are computed for a plant model of fractional order. The integer transfer function of the plant model is obtained by applying Oustaloup filter approximation technique. For comparison of the reduction methods with ideal response, the analysis has been done both in frequency-domain and time-domain using MATLAB.

LabVIEW is one of the various programming platforms which is widely utilized by the researchers of fraternities form both industry and academia, due to its simple-to-use graphical programming environment and extra ordinary easy interface with the hardware. LabVIEW is equipped with various in-built toolkits to perform different measurement and control tasks. One of these tasks is solving an optimization problem which is often encountered by researchers from variety of fields viz. control engineering, civil design, machine design, digital signal processing, and economics etc. However, the standard LabVIEW package is equipped with only a single global optimization algorithm, i.e. Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm and there exists a need of other efficient global optimization techniques. This paper deals with same concern and an effort has been made to develop a widely established and practiced global meta-heuristic algorithm i.e. cuckoo search algorithm (CSA) in LabVIEW environment. To test the CSA implementation in LabVIEW environment, nine benchmark test functions have been used and a comparative study has been made with DE algorithm. It was found from the conducted studies that CSA was more efficient in solving optimization problems with better convergence rate and repeatability than DE.

This paper proposes a new design of CMOS current differencing transconductance amplifier (CDTA). The proposed design uses a source degenerated differential pair in which biasing current is kept constant and tuning is performed by controlling the value of source degeneration resistance. This scheme provides high transconductance and wide tuning range while the power dissipation remains in the same range as in the existing CDTAs. The workability of the proposed CDTA has been verified by using Mentor Graphics Eldo simulation tool with TSMC CMOS 0.18 μm process parameters. A third order voltage/current mode quadrature sinusoidal oscillator has been designed by using proposed CDTA.

In the present work, response surface methodology (RSM) has been used to model and predict the wear properties of Bio-composites fabricated in this study. Polished stainless steel counterface has been used to analyze the wear response of the bio-composite under dry contact condition. Three process variables namely applied sliding speed, normal load, and sliding distance were taken to investigate their effect on output response (specific wear rate). Statistical analysis was performed in the form of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) to analyze the significance and interaction of experimental parameters. The mathematical relationship between sliding wear input process parameters and output responses has been established to determine the values of output responses.

Transfer function of a third-order differentiator in the z-domain is obtained by applying optimization techniques. Comparing this discrete-time transfer function with the transfer function of transmissionline configuration in z-domain and using optimization algorithms, a third-order microwave differentiator is designed which can work up to 10 GHz. The weight initialization implementation is related to the convergence of any learning/training algorithm. In this paper we have analyzed Gradient Descent with Momentum Back propagation algorithm using eight different approximation functions and Nguyen & Widrow weight initialization method. In mixed-line-rate (MLR) networks, various data rates, on varied wavelengths, exist on a fiber. In MLR networks, end-to-end lightpaths can be established with the desired line rate; requiring advanced modulation formats for higher data rates. However, along the route, the signals experience different physical layer impairments (PLIs), and their quality also worsens. The transmission signal quality is affected by the launch power, which must be high for lesser noise at the receiver, and must also be low, such that the PLIs do not start to distort the signal. Further, higher launch power also disrupts the existing lightpath and its neighbours. We propose a weighted strategy for provisioning PLI-aware (PLI-A) lightpaths in MLR networks. Through the simulations, we compare and demonstrate that the proposed strategy demonstrates better performances than our previously proposed algorithm (i.e. PLI-Average (PLI-A)), and existing approaches.
