In Opportunistic Networks (Oppnets), the end-to-end path between the source and the destination never exists or may exist only for a very short and unpredictable period of time. Therefore, routing in these type of networks is different from that in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) which first establish a source to destination path before the delivery of a message occurs. The nodes in Oppnets do not have or acquire the knowledge about the network topology which is necessary in case of MANETs. Here, the construction of routes is not static, but dynamic since the source can choose any node from a group of neighbors as a next hop assuming that it will deliver the message closer to the destination. In this paper, we have simulated, investigated and compared the performance of various routing protocols for Oppnets. Six existing routing protocols in Oppnets have been compared with each other by using various performance evaluating factors.

In this paper a new fractional order recursive digital integrator is presented. Fractional order integrators have a wide range of applications in automatic control systems, circuit theory, dynamical systems and signal processing. The implementation of fractional order recursive digital integrator requires two steps. In the first step, an integer order digital integrator is designed then in the next step continued fraction expansion (CFE) is used to obtain an efficient fractional order digital integrator which is suitable over the complete Nyquist frequency range. The proposed half order integrator accurately approximates the ideal half order integrator reasonably well over the entire Nyquist frequency range with absolute magnitude error ≤ 0.05 and it outperforms the existing half order integrators.

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) offer a dynamic environment in which data exchange can occur without the need of a centralized server or human authority, providing that nodes cooperate among each other for routing. In such an environment, the protection of data en route to its destination is still a challenging issue in the presence of malevolent nodes. This paper proposes a message security approach in MANETs that uses a trust-based multipath AOMDV routing combined with soft-encryption, yielding our so-called T-AOMDV scheme. Simulation results using ns2 demonstrate that our scheme is much more secured than traditional multipath routing algorithms and a recently proposed message security scheme for MANETs (our so-called Trust-based Multipath Routing scheme (T-DSR)), chosen as benchmark. The performance criteria used are route selection time and trust compromise.

In recent years video-on-demand has emerged as one of the potential applications of multimedia. Among all multimedia applications, videos require the largest amount of bandwidth. Being a scarce resource, bandwidth utilization in efficient and feasible way always have been the main concern in video broadcasting schemes. In request based scheme [8], a unicast channel is initiated on the arrival of a request in an inter-arrival time of two adjacent multicast channels. If several requests arrive in a very short duration then each of them initiates a separate unicast channel, requiring large number of unicast channels. However, all these requests are fetching almost same video data. In proposed algorithm, we cluster all incoming requests in a short time span and serve them by a single unicast channel. The spanning duration is determined by the threshold of user's tolerable waiting time. In our adaptive channel allocation algorithm, we took a waiting time of at most one minute for users and found that for popular videos with arrival rate more than 5.5 per minute, a saving of around 90% in bandwidth can be obtained. For less popular videos bandwidth saving is≥ 40% The proposed scheme can precisely predict the waiting time for any user in case of unavailability of unicast channels, while there is no such mechanism in the request based scheme. Further, all the channels in the work are only unicast channels. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a Geocast technique for underwater sensor networks. The model named as Routing and Multicast Tree based Geocasting (RMTG) [1] has been designed for underwater sensor networks. In our previous work [1] we proposed a theoretical model for underwater geocasting that uses greedy forwarding and previous hop handshaking to route the packets towards the geocast region and further disseminates the data within the geocast region by creating a multicast shortest path tree. In this paper we present the modified RMTG algorithm and incorporate the various link broken scenarios along with their solutions. This model provides an efficient distribution of data in the geocast region in terms of node mobility handling, lesser memory utilization, lesser calculations and a better end to end latency. In addition to this the presented model does not use the flooding technique to deliver the packets inside the geocast region that is used in most of the geocasting techniques. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Recent technological advancements in the field of nanotechnology have increased the computation power of the wireless nodes while adhering to the energy constraints. This has made the use of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), more widespread;used in applications such as area monitoring, industrial monitoring, vehicle detection or military monitoring. Sensor nodes have made it possible to collect data even in hostile environments, but because of the severe security and energy constraints faced by sensor networks, their deployment on a large scale is still a tricky job. A secure energy efficient routing algorithm is thus the need of the hour. SPIN, Sensor Protocol for Information via Negotiation, is one of the widely used energy efficient routing protocol in WSNs that completely ignores the security aspect. This paper involves proposing an alternate routing protocol, MS-SPIN, which incorporates the best features of SPIN while also addressing the security issue. The implementation of MS-SPIN in NS2 has shown that, for a larger number of nodes, its energy performance characteristics are comparable to those of SPIN while providing security features. © 2010 IEEE.

The continuing explosive growth of textual content within the World Wide Web has given rise to the need for sophisticated Text Classification (TC) techniques that combine efficiency with high quality of results. E-mail filtering is one application that has the potential to affect every user of the internet. Even though a large body of research has delved into this problem, there is a paucity of survey that indicates trends and directions. This paper attempts to categorize the prevalent popular techniques for classifying email as spam or legitimate and suggest possible techniques to fill in the lacunae. Our findings suggest that context-based email filtering has the most potential in improving quality by learning various contexts such as n-gram phrases, linguistic constructs or users' profile based context to tailor his/her filtering scheme. © 2010 IEEE.

The past few years have observed vehicular networks becoming increasingly important in order to exchange information between stationary or moving vehicles. The information exchanged can range from warning messages in case of accidents that have occurred on the road and traffic jams to guiding the vehicles about the most efficient path to reach their destination. The biggest challenge, a vehicular network routing protocol faces, is providing a stable packet delivery mechanism. The proposed PMH protocol aims at providing a high packet delivery ratio by selecting each next node (vehicle) in the path from the source to the destination based on a parameter called the Disconnection Probability Metric (DPM). The DPM mainly represents the link breakage probability between nodes and the node with the least DPM is selected as the next node. Moreover, the PMH protocol also calculates the predicted link lifetime based on which it initiates the route selection algorithm before the weakest link actually breaks. This mechanism further enhances the usefulness of the algorithm as there is lesser control overhead to overcome link breakage.

Major constraints to be kept in mind while designing a routing protocol for ad hoc networks are battery power consumption, congestion control, time delay and the transmission range of the nodes. In this paper, we aim to develop an energy efficient and angular routing protocol, named Efficient Reactive and Angular - Optimized Link State Routing (ERA-OLSR). ERA-OLSR is an enhanced protocol designed over the well known Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) [1]. ERA-OLSR is a reactive protocol which omits the use of routing table from OLSR and decides the next hop on the basis of angular concept. The proposed protocol has been compared with well established reactive protocols namely Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV) [2] and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) [3, 4]. The results achieved after implementing the proposed protocol establishes the fact that ERA-OLSR shows a better performance than both AODV and DSR in terms of End-to-end delay and Average Energy Consumption during the simulation. ©2010 IEEE.

Most of the work on geocasting has been done for mobile ad-hoc networks and vehicular ad-hoc networks. This paper presents a novel Geocast technique with the hole detection in the geocast region for underwater environment. The proposed model named as Routing and Multicast Tree based Geocasting (RMTG) has been designed for underwater sensor networks. Here we propose a theoretical model for underwater geocasting RMTG that uses greedy forwarding and previous hop handshaking to route the packets towards the geocast region. This technique further disseminates the data within the geocast region by creating a multicast shortest path tree. The technique also proposes a method of hole detection inside the geocast region and a virtual area based routing around the boundaries of the geocast region to reach the geocast region from opposite side. This model provides an efficient geocast technique in terms of node mobility handling, lesser memory utilization, lesser calculations and a better end to end latency. In addition to this the proposed model does not use flooding inside the geocast region that is used in most of the geocasting techniques and also for guaranteed data delivery inside the geocast region, the proposed model does not use the planarization graph concepts.
