Computational mechanics has been recognized as a powerful tool for cardiovascular disease research, vascular surgeryplanning and medical device design. The accurate and efficientconstruction of anatomic models is a critical element in the application of these computational methods. Wc developed an interactive modeling system for the computational biomechanics simulation using medical imaging data such as MRI or CT. The novelaspect of this modeling system is that the operator can modifythe mode! which is rendered over the reference volumciric images. Therefore efficient modeling can be done with help of theheuristic knowledge of the operator. © ASME International Mechanical engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE).

Computational simulation of flow in the aortic arch (Influence of the 3-D distortion on flows in the ordinary helix circular tube)

Recent research has shown that the centerline of the human aortic arch does not lie in a plane, but has a three-dimensional (3-D) distortion. This distortion is thought to be a risk factor in the development of aneurysms. In the present study, the aorta was numerically modeled using a computational fluid dynamics method. The flow geometry consisted of a circular tube with a centerline approximated by an ordinary helix. A region with a high component of longitudinal wall shear stress was found distributed along the direction of the torsion. The localization of the wall shear stress distribution is due to complex centrifugal forces, and is discussed with respect to the development of vascular diseases including aneurysms and atherosclerosis.

Ranking fuzzy numbers is one of the very important research topics in fuzzy set theory because it is a base of decision-making in all application areas. However, fuzzy numbers cannot be easily arranged in order of magnitude because they represent uncertain and vague values. When two fuzzy numbers overlap with each other, a fuzzy number may not be considered absolutely larger than the other. That is, even though a fuzzy number may be considered larger than the other, it may also be considered smaller than the other. It means that, even when we consider only two fuzzy numbers, two sequences may be the ranking result at the same time. However, most of the existing ranking methods produce only one ranking sequence. They ignore other possible sequences due to the overlap between fuzzy numbers. We propose a ranking method which generates possible ranking sequences of fuzzy numbers, and represents them with fuzzy sets. Some numeric examples are also presented to show how our method ranks fuzzy numbers.

In this paper we look at two issues which could affect the performance of value prediction on wide-issue ILP processors. One is the large number of accesses to the value prediction tables needed in each machine cycle, and the other is the latency required to update stale values in the value prediction tables. We introduce a prediction value cache (PVC) which augments the instruction cache to hold the prediction values. Using the PVC, we not only can provide required bandwidth to access multiple prediction values needed in each machine cycle but also allow us to decouple the value prediction from the critical path in the instruction fetch stage. We use a hybrid value predictor with dynamic classification to perform value prediction in the write back stage, and assume a realistic number of read/write ports, e.g. 2 read/write ports, with queues in their prediction tables. We found good performance for a 8-issue processor using simulations. We also found that, in a 8-issue processor using SPECint95 benchmark programs, 36% of instructions will access the same value prediction table entry again within 5 cycles, and 22% of instructions will do that within 2 cycles. Unless the prediction tables can be quickly updated, especially for the Stride type and the Two-level type, those value predictions will get stale values and mostly resulted in mispredictions. We examine several schemes such as attaching an age counter and using speculative update to cope with the problem of delayed updates, but found them not as effective due to the latency required in dynamic classification. If such latency can be reduced, e.g. by using compiler analysis to determine access types at compiler time, the performance could be further improved.

We present ViMPIOS, a novel MPI-IO implementation based on ViPIOS, the Vienna Parallel Input Output System. ViMPIOS inherits the defining characteristics of ViPIOS, which makes it a client-server based system focusing on cluster architectures. ViMPIOS stands out from all other MPI-IO implementations by its "truly" portable design, which allows not only applications to be transferred between parallel architectures easily but also to keep their original performance characteristics on the new platform as far as possible. This is kept by the "smart" AI-blackboard module of ViPIOS, which is responsible for an appropriate data layout. Specifically in this paper we concentrate on the algorithm, which maps MPI-IO data structures on respective ViPIOS structures, and thus allows to exploit the ViPIOS properties.

The productivity of software development largely depends on the degree of how much the ready-made software components are reused effectively. An object-oriented application framework is a semi-completed application. It enables software developers to reuse the knowledge from the application analysis and design phase as well as the development phase of software. As object-oriented frameworks are complex and large, the effectiveness of conventional approaches to retrieve reusable frameworks may be reduced. This paper proposes to model object-oriented frameworks using XML (Extensible Markup Language) and apply a retrieval technique for structured documents. It characterizes elements for describing framework information and suggests their schema. It also increases the effectiveness of search by expanding similar terms through query reformulation.

With the advance of hardware and software technology, modern phased array radars are now built with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, and it opens up a new era in real-time resource scheduling of digital signal processing. This paper targets the essential issues in building a component-oriented signal processor (SP), which is one of the two major modules in modern phased array radars. We propose a simple but effective task allocation policy and a real-time scheduling algorithm to address the design objectives of SPs. We are able to bound the number of processing units needed for a component-oriented SP in the design time, while everything was done empirically in the past. A series of experiments were done to demonstrate the strength of our methodology.

Cathodoluminescence studies of GaN transistor structures have revealed a deep UV band at about 5 eV. The band was characterised as a function of accelerating voltage, temperature and spatially resolved images were taken. A similar band was detected in both undoped n-type and p-type doped GaN. We tentatively identify the band to be due to emission from the native gallium oxide.

Via experimental study, we illustrate how TCP modulates application traffic in such a way as to adversely affect network performance in a heterogeneous computing system. Even when aggregate application traffic smooths out as more applications' traffic are multiplexed, TCP induces burstiness into the aggregate traffic load, and thus hurts network performance. This burstiness is particularly bad in TCP Reno, and even worse when RED gateways are employed. Based on the results of this experimental study, we then develop a stochastic model for TCP Reno to demonstrate how the burstiness in TCP Reno can be modeled.

This paper presents the main concepts of the IST Project FAIN "Future Active IP Networks" [10], a three-year collaborative research project, whose main task is to develop and validate an open, flexible, programmable and dependable network architecture based on a novel active node approach. This generic architecture for active networks is an innovative integration of active networking, distributed object and mobile agent technology. Starting from the definition of a business model that underlines the FAIN architecture, we identify three key working areas for contribution: the active node platform layer, the service programming environment and a built-in management system. The active node platform layer of the FAIN Active Node is comprised of the kernel Operating System, a node resource access control framework, and active components for management, security and service pro-H. vision. These elements provide the foundations for Execution Environments so that they can operate in an independent manner. A novel service programming environment is envisaged to enable the dynamic creation or update and to secure deployment and operation of protocols. Such an environment supports various role-specific ways of deployment, e.g. application-specific signalling or operator-governed network control signalling. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.
