Improved object arrangement and layout design considering interaction for indoor scene synthesis in immersive virtual reality

This study proposes an improved object arrangement and a layout design including movement path and location recommendation algorithm that considers the systematic interaction of virtual reality (VR) users participating in the created virtual scene for efficient and realistic indoor scene synthesis in immersive VR. First, we propose a new object labeling technique as an improved arrangement method based on existing object arrangement optimization. It has a top-down structure wherein commonalities between objects, reset of pairwise relationship objects, and cost calculation process for each object in objects movement are grouped for arrangement. Next, we design a layout that considers VR user participation as a way to apply the created virtual scene to immersive VR. This diversifies the object arrangement pattern by considering not only the rectangular wall layout but also the concave structure layout. In addition, we propose a method to recommend the location of VR users according to the interaction host such that VR users can interact effectively and organically within the defined layout. Consequently, through comparative analysis with existing approaches, the performance of the proposed method was verified and improved results were confirmed. Zero-dynamics attack detection based on data association in feedback pathway

This paper considers the security of non-minimum phase systems, a typical kind of cyber-physical systems. Non-minimum phase systems are characterized by unstable zeros in their transfer functions, making them particularly susceptible to disturbances and attacks. The non-minimum phase systems are more vulnerable to zero-dynamics attack (ZDA) than minimum phase systems. ZDA is a stealthy attack strategy that exploits the internal dynamics of a system, remaining undetectable while causing gradual system destabilization. Recent cyber incidents have demonstrated the increasing risk of such hidden attacks in critical infrastructures, such as power grids and transportation systems. This paper first demonstrates that the existing ZDA has the limitation of falling into local convergence, and then proposes an enhanced zero-dynamics attack (EZDA), which overcomes local convergence by diverging system data. Furthermore, this paper presents an autoregressive model which can build the data association between the original data and the forged data. By observing the fluctuations in state values, the presented model can detect not only ZDA, but also EZDA. Finally, numerical simulations and an application example are provided to verify the theoretical results. © 2025

EPM: Evolutionary Perception Method for Anomaly Detection in Noisy Dynamic Graphs

With the rapid expansion of interactions across various domains such as knowledge graphs and social networks, anomaly detection in dynamic graphs has become increasingly critical for mitigating potential risks. However, existing anomaly detection methods often assume noise-free dynamic graphs, overlooking the prevalence of noisy dynamic graphs in real-world applications. Specifically, noisy dynamic graphs affected by structural noises-such as spurious and missing nodes and edges-struggle to consistently provide reliable structural evidence for anomaly detection. To tackle this challenge, we propose an Evolutionary Perception Method (EPM) for identifying anomalous nodes in noisy dynamic graphs by resisting the interference of structural noises. EPM primarily consists of two components: a dynamic fitter and a filtering reviser. The dynamic fitter characterizes the interaction dynamics of nodes that removes and generates links at each period as a multiple superposition state, utilizing various link prediction algorithms to fit evolutionary mechanisms. Additionally, the filtering reviser designs evolutional entropies to quantify the evolutional uncertainty in multiple superposition states, further designing the Kalman filter to optimize these entropies. Extensive experiments show that the proposed EPM method surpasses state-of-the-art approaches in detecting anomalous nodes in noisy dynamic graphs. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

For future Internet of Vehicles (IoV), communications and computing will converge to provide services. Federated learning (FL), as one of the typical distributed computing technologies, needs to be integrated with IoV. For such integration, FL suffers from the straggler effect that the entire learning speed is lowered down, because of the existence of the devices, such as low-powered road side units and vehicles, taking more time to complete their tasks. Although the existing mechanisms reduce straggler effects by adopting asynchronous mechanisms and clustering mechanisms, they lack the detailed analysis of the reasons and the impacts of each cause, leading to inefficiencies in the design of algorithm. Additionally, most of the existing work only considered the impact of a single factor in computation, communication, or data distribution, which lacks comprehensive on research for causes of stragglers effects. The bottleneck is that it is laborious to observe the time delay precisely with the existing high-calculating evaluations. In this article, we elaborately explore the effects of computing power, communication capability, and data distributions on the straggler effects with carefully designing and conducting the extensive experiments. After investigations, we propose a novel learning completion time estimation formula for low computing capability devices with mini-batch stochastic gradient decent (SGD). We compare our proposed estimation formula with the one based on floating operation per second (FLOPs). Through the evaluations, our formula can demonstrate the improvement up to 72.4% at docker and 32.4% at Raspberry Pi device compared to the existing work. © 2014 IEEE.

A Deep Learning-Based Method for Crowd Counting Using Shunting Inhibition Mechanism

Image-based crowd counting has gained significant attention due to its widespread applications in security and surveillance. Recent advancements in deep learning have led to the development of numerous methods that have achieved remarkable success in accurately counting crowds. However, many of the existing deep learning methods, which have large model sizes, are unsuitable for deployment on edge devices. This article introduces a novel network architecture and processing element designed to create an efficient and compact deep learning model for crowd counting. The processing element, referred to as the shunting inhibitory neuron, generates complex decision boundaries, making it more powerful than the traditional perceptron. It is employed in both the encoder and decoder modules of the proposed model for feature extraction. Furthermore, the decoder includes alternating convolutional and transformer layers, which provide local receptive fields and global self-attention, respectively. This design captures rich contextual information that is used for generating accurate segmentation and density maps. The self-attention mechanism is implemented using convolution modulation instead of matrix multiplication to reduce computational costs. Experiments conducted on three challenging crowd counting datasets demonstrate that the proposed deep learning network, which comprises a small model size, achieves crowd counting performance comparable to that of state-of-the-art techniques. AppealMod: Inducing Friction to Reduce Moderator Workload of Handling User Appeals

As content moderation becomes a central aspect of all social media platforms and online communities, interest has grown in how to make moderation decisions contestable. On social media platforms where individual communities moderate their own activities, the responsibility to address user appeals falls on volunteers from within the community. While there is a growing body of work devoted to understanding and supporting the volunteer moderators' workload, little is known about their practice of handling user appeals. Through a collaborative and iterative design process with Reddit moderators, we found that moderators spend considerable effort in investigating user ban appeals and desired to directly engage with users and retain their agency over each decision. To fulfill their needs, we designed and built AppealMod, a system that induces friction in the appeals process by asking users to provide additional information before their appeals are reviewed by human moderators. In addition to giving moderators more information, we expected the friction in the appeal process would lead to a selection effect among users, with many insincere and toxic appeals being abandoned before getting any attention from human moderators. To evaluate our system, we conducted a randomized field experiment in a Reddit community of over 29 million users that lasted for four months. As a result of the selection effect, moderators viewed only 30% of initial appeals and less than 10% of the toxically worded appeals;yet they granted roughly the same number of appeals when compared with the control group. Overall, our system is effective at reducing moderator workload and minimizing their exposure to toxic content while honoring their preference for direct engagement and agency in appeals. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Skeletal muscle ultrasound has emerged as a pivotal imaging modality in rheumatology clinics, offering unparalleled advantages such as radiation-free imaging, safety, and dynamic examination capabilities. However, its reliance on operator expertise often leads to inconsistent interpretations and diagnostic variability. In this study, we present a novel diagnostic system aimed at detecting rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the wrist joint, with a focus on identifying synovial hypertrophy and effusion using musculoskeletal ultrasound images. Leveraging deep learning techniques, specifically semantic segmentation models, we introduce SEAT-UNet, which combines the U-Net architecture with a self-attention mechanism to enhance the accuracy of lesion classification and localization. SEAT-UNet addresses the challenge of discontinuous dispersion encountered in conventional segmentation models, particularly when delineating lesion areas. Our experimental results demonstrate exceptional performance, achieving a sensitivity and Dice coefficient of 100% and 84%, respectively, in synovial hypertrophy detection, and 86% sensitivity with an 84% Dice coefficient in effusion detection. These findings underscore the potential of SEAT-UNet as a valuable tool for early RA diagnosis, offering improved patient outcomes and facilitating more effective disease management strategies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The purpose of this research is to develop an educational application for children that identifies recyclable resources from waste images captured by mobile devices. Even if an object can be identified from the captured image, the waste category may differ by municipality. We propose the construction of a "municipal filter"(we call "ECO filter"), which can classify the object in an image appropriately according to the waste name and the location where the image taken. We describe the concept and construction method of the ECO filter, and show the results and effects of constructing the ECO filter by integrating the waste classification tables of multiple municipalities in Kumamoto Prefecture, based on string matching of waste names. © 2024 IEEE.
