A modified Teaching-Learning in Classroom (TLC) theoretical model is presented in this paper. It describes the general learning process of undergraduates in NUS in the context of the GEQ1000 module offered by the Office of Provost. The results of the simulations are within the range of expectations, such that in general, the students' knowledge level increases over the course of a 13 weeks module. GEQ1000 is a compulsory module taken by all NUS first year students (∼2800 per semester). © 2019 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

We present new ALMA observations and physical properties of a Lyman Break Galaxy at z = 7.15. Our target, B14-65666, has a bright ultra-violet (UV) absolute magnitude, MUV ≈ −22.4, and has been spectroscopically identified in Lyα with a small rest-frame equivalent width of ≈ 4 Å. Previous HST image has shown that the target is comprised of two spatially separated clumps in the rest-frame UV. With ALMA, we have newly detected spatially resolved [Oiii] 88 µm, [Cii] 158 µm, and their underlying dust continuum emission. In the whole system of B14-65666, the [Oiii] and [Cii] lines have consistent redshifts of 7.1520 ± 0.0003, and the [Oiii] luminosity, (34.4 ± 4.1) × 108 L☉, is about three times higher than the [Cii] luminosity, (11.0 ± 1.4) × 108 L☉. With our two continuum flux densities, the dust temperature is constrained to be Td ≈ 50 − 60 K under the assumption of the dust emissivity index of βd = 2.0 − 1.5, leading to a large total infrared luminosity of LTIR ≈ 1 × 1012 L☉. Owing to our high spatial resolution data, we show that the [Oiii] and [Cii] emission can be spatially decomposed into two clumps associated with the two rest-frame UV clumps whose spectra are kinematically separated by ≈ 200 km s−1. We also find these two clumps have comparable UV, infrared, [Oiii], and [Cii] luminosities. Based on these results, we argue that B14-65666 is a starburst galaxy induced by a major-merger. The merger interpretation is also supported by the large specific star-formation rate (defined as the star-formation rate per unit stellar mass), sSFR = 260+119−57 Gyr−1, inferred from our SED fitting. Probably, a strong UV radiation field caused by intense star formation contributes to its high dust temperature and the [Oiii]-to-[Cii] luminosity ratio. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. This work aims at bringing empirical knowledge on Human-Robot Interaction obtained from user studies closer to being integrated into the capabilities of robots currently available on the market. The Takagi-Sugeno-Kang method and results of a user study conducted with thirty two participants were used to build a fuzzy data-based model for Human-Robot Proxemics. The experiment investigated the effect of robot approach distance and angle on perceived human comfort. The proposed model, consisting of a set of rules, fuzzy sets and their parameters, can be used by the robotics community thanks to their formal form. It can also be directly translated into natural language statements. Results of model cross-validation are reported.

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.

The theoretical, numerical, and experimental study of compressible, variable-density, and incompressible turbulent mixing associated with Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM), Rayleigh–Taylor (RT), and Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instabilities is motivated by diverse applications in science and engineering including combustion and other chemically reacting flows, stratified geophysical flows, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), and astrophysical flows (supernovae, molecular clouds, and stellar interiors, for example). The study of these instabilities and associated mixing is particularly challenging due to the fact that they involve multiple fluids (or materials), rather than single fluids. The Reynolds number becomes very large in many of these applications, and the instabilities rapidly lead to turbulent mixing. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

This paper presents a solar energy harvesting (EH) system to power a portable compact LED lamp, which can be charged during daytime and used to light during night time. The solar lamp consists of three PV panels, an EH and power management circuit, three NiMH rechargeable batteries, and an LED. A commercial off-the-shelf chip TI BQ25504 is used to prototype the EH and power management circuit for the proposed system. Experimental results show that the proposed PVsystem can harvest solar energy both in indoor and outdoor environments. The peak net power harvested by the proposed system is about 380 mW on a sunny day, 250 mW on a partly cloudy day, and 30 mW on a cloudy day.
