Using 28nm test chips, we derive signatures for early-life failures (ELF) in both high-K/metal-gate transistors and ultra low-K inter-metal dielectrics. We also demonstrate that the derived ELF signatures can be successfully detected using a clock control technique. Our results can be utilized to overcome scaled-CMOS reliability challenges in several ways: 1. Low-cost ELF detection during on-line operation of robust systems without requiring expensive redundancy-based error detection techniques;2. Effective ELF screening during production test while reducing stress time and/or stress levels associated with stress tests such as burn-in.

The use of virtual cluster for High Performance Computing (HPC) work has a great benefit of hiding the complexity of physical infrastructure while providing a familiar HPC environment for users. Nevertheless, setting up one is still a challenging task for most users. In addition, the ability to span a virtual cluster across a multi-site cloud can even create a great potential for users to harness a much higher processing power from the cloud. In this paper, the development of a multi-site virtual cluster cloud is presented. This is done by providing the cloud infrastructures tailored specifically for virtual cluster deployment along with related utilities such as web-interface monitor and command line tools. To realize this infrastructure, an overlay network is created using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to merge every site into a single broadcast domain. Moreover, a Multi-tier VPN network topology is proposed to enhance the communication performance among the multi-site cloud. A smart virtual machine scheduling mechanism is introduced to reduce performance degradation caused by network delays. The experimental results show that the virtual cluster works well with highly parallel task with low communication among task. Thus, this technology can be used to support many classes of important HPC applications.

An internal model of autonomous mobile robots (agent) is proposed in this paper. A TSK-type fuzzy net is used as a classifier of environment information, i.e., the state of an agent, and reinforcement learning methods such as Q-learning, sarsa-learning are used to make multiple agents acquire adaptive behaviors. Goal navigated exploration problem was simulated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods, and the results showed that the new learning methods are more efficient than actor-critic method which was proposed by our previous work. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

Dynamic collapse analyses of a 4-story steel building frame modeled by solid elements are performed using the E-Simulator, which is a parallel finite element analysis software package for civil and building structures. Code verification, calculation verification, and validation of the numerical codes (V&V) are conducted by comparing the results obtained by the E-Simulator, those obtained by a beam element analysis code, and the experimental results obtained by the 3-D full-scale earthquake testing facility, the E-Defense at NIED. The seismic response analyses under 60% or 100% of the JR Takatori seismic wave of the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake are performed. The shear forces and interstory drift angles of the 1st story obtained by the E-Simulator simulation and the E-Defense full-scale test have good agreement. Both response of the whole frame and local deformation due to plastic buckling are simulated in the analysis using the E-Simulator.

Determining event ordering has always been a crucial issue in distributed computing. A well known model for describing event ordering is the happened-before relation. However, the traditional happened-before relation model is inadequate to faithfully characterize event ordering in recent emerging mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), which usually have no fixed supporting infrastructure and may experience dynamic network topology changes. In this paper, we first propose a new relation, called the extended-happened-before relation, to model the ordering of events for a MANET. Then we present an algorithm to assign logical time to events such that the extended-happened-before relation between events can be decided by comparing their timestamps. We finally show how to construct consistent global snapshots in a MANET when the ordering of events can be determined.

There is nearly universal agreement among engineering educators that the ABET2000 rules, although very well intentioned, have unintentionally increased the workload required to document that all ABET outcomes (a through k) are met, and that a process of continuous improvement is in place. Although there is no magic wand to eliminate all of the documentation and record keeping, organization and technology can be used to considerably reduce the time needed for the ongoing self-assessment process. Towards this end, the Department of Electrical and computer engineering at Binghamton University has created a WEB hosted database system, referred to as the ABET Compliance Tracking System or ACTS. In this paper, the preparation of ACTS, its key components, its usage, and continued development are described. ACTS can be readily adapted for use by other engineering programs.

The optimization and verification for a robot control system have been studied respectively. In this paper, we propose a robot control model which combines optimization and verification based on Learning Petri Net (LPN). In our former work, learning Petri net model has been constructed based on high-level time Petri net and Reinforcement Learning (RL). The reinforcement learning is applied to optimize the parameters of Petri net. These parameters adjusting may make the properties of learning Petri net change. In this paper, the verification algorithms for learning Petri net are proposed. Using this model, a robot control system with optimization and verification capability is constructed. Finally, for the purpose of certification of the effectiveness of our proposed methods, this robot control system is used to control a robot system - E-puck as an example. The result of the experiment shows the methods are correct and effective. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Constraint solving is a fundamental tenet of most test case generation strategies. However, conventional constraint solving methods were not designed in consideration of that aspect of test case generation. It has led to a situation where test case generation techniques can miss test cases when constraints contain function invocations. This is due to the fact that, when solving constraints to generate test cases, function invocations are not effectively handled and, as a result, solutions to some constraints are not found even though they do exist. This problem occurs in both specification-based and code-based testing. To address the problem, this paper presents a function substitution method that transforms test case constraints that contain certain types of functions into equivalent constraints that do not contain those functions. The transformation preserves the solution space and avoids missed test cases. As a result, the completeness of test case generation can be improved.

Nowadays, a lot of inverted pendulum robots have been developed. The complexity of the dynamical control systems is increased and they are advanced toward autonomous inverted pendulum robots. When the controllers are designed, the software MATLAB/Simulink is often used. It is well known that it is a very useful tool to design and analyze motion control systems. However, it is not always useful to express huge or multifunctional systems. At that time, System Modeling language (SysML) is known as a useful tool for that system design. Then it seems the usage of the both tools are useful. In order to develop the inverted pendulum robots in practice, we need multi-stand points for the real time systems. We have to study the both of them and investigate how to fill the gap. This paper introduces our requirement, overview of inverted pendulum robot system, hardware configurations, and map the balancing control using observer based control from Simulink model to SysML models. Furthermore, SysML is a guideline to define the interconnection between functions and combine them together. © 2011 SICE.

This paper puts forward an efficient and optimized method to determine the probable-colluders in a MD5 based cryptosystem. Along with the conventional MD5 implementing architecture, our scheme employs a predictor control block which takes the message stream from the user, and provides the log-list of the equal length bit-streams that are most likely to produce collisions with the message stream in a real time system. The predictor controller uses Time varying Acceleration Coefficient Particle Swarm optimization (TVAC-PSO) algorithm. Besides proposing the algorithm itself the paper also surveys the performance of the predictor when employed with different hardware platforms.
