Jets are identified and their properties studied in center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider using charged particles measured by the ATLAS inner detector. Events are selected using a minimum bias trigger, allowing jets at very low transverse momentum to be observed and their characteristics in the transition to high-momentum fully perturbative jets to be studied. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm applied to charged particles with two radius parameter choices, 0.4 and 0.6. An inclusive charged jet transverse momentum cross section measurement from 4 GeV to 100 GeV is shown for four ranges in rapidity extending to 1.9 and corrected to charged particle-level truth jets. The transverse momenta and longitudinal momentum fractions of charged particles within jets are measured, along with the charged particle multiplicity and the particle density as a function of radial distance from the jet axis. Comparison of the data with the theoretical models implemented in existing tunings of Monte Carlo event generators indicates reasonable overall agreement between data and Monte Carlo. These comparisons are sensitive to Monte Carlo parton showering, hadronization, and soft physics models.

Data analysis processes in scientific applications can be expressed as coarse-grain workflows of complex data processing operations with data flow dependencies between them. Performance optimization of these workflows can be viewed as a search for a set of optimal values in a multi-dimensional parameter space. While some performance parameters such as grouping of workflow components and their mapping to machines do not affect the accuracy of the output, others may dictate trading the output quality of individual components (and of the whole workflow) for performance. This paper describes an integrated framework which is capable of supporting performance optimizations along multiple dimensions of the parameter space. Using two real-world applications in the spatial data analysis domain, we present an experimental evaluation of the proposed framework. Copyright 2009 ACM.

A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is presented. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1. No excess of such events is observed above the standard model background prediction. In the context of a specific model with one universal extra dimension with compactification radius R and gravity-induced decays, values of 1/R<729 GeV are excluded at 95% C. L., providing the most sensitive limit on this model to date.

The electrochemical properties of poly(-methylbenzyl dipropargylamine) was studied by cyclic voltametry. Poly(-methylbenzyl dipropargylamine) was prepared by the cyclopolymerization of -methylbenzyl dipropargylamine in high yield. The photoluminescence peaks of the present polymer was observed at 443nm corresponding to the photon energy of 2.80eV. The cyclovoltamograms of the polymer exhibited the irreversible electrochemical behaviors between the doping and undoping peaks. It was found that the kinetics of the redox process of poly(MBDPA) might be mainly controlled by the electron transfer process from the experiment of the oxidation current density of poly(MBDPA) versus the scan rate.

We designed a concept of high resolution and quantitative SPECT for imaging a selected small region-of-interest (ROI) of human brain. This system is aimed at achieving high resolution less than 1 mm and being applied for imaging neurons and evaluating drug delivery system. Pinhole or cone-beam collimators are useful for high-resolution imaging of small ROI. However, when the ROI is smaller than the object, the projection data are truncated by radioisotope outside ROI. In the reconstructed image, the truncation causes the artifact and the overestimation of voxel value, which deceases quantitative accuracy of physiological functions. We are introducing the new truncation compensated 3D-OSEM (TC-3DOSEM) reconstruction method. The truncated data can be successfully reconstructed within ROI by fulfilling the condition that ROI contains a priori knowledge. In addition to small field-of-view (FOV) detector, we are introducing the parallel-hole collimator attached large FOV detector covering the entire brain, to acquire the non-truncated data and provide the priori knowledge in small ROI, even if the resolution of the detector is low. For imaging with high resolution, we are using LaBr 3 (Ce) scintillator with optically coupled to position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (H8500, Hamamatsu, Japan) as the detector. And also, for proof of our concept, we performed preliminary experiment using pinhole SPECT and brain phantom. The reconstruction ROI contained the region outside the brain, that is, zero count as the priori knowledge. The truncated data were reconstructed by TC-3DOSEM. The reconstructed image without artifact and overestimation was obtained with high resolution. This preliminary experiment suggested feasibility of high resolution and quantitative SPECT for imaging a selected small ROI of human brain.

A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |ηγ|<1.37 and 1.52≤|ηγ|<1.81 in the transverse energy range 15≤ETγ<100 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 880 nb−1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and from the inner tracker. Residual background in the selected sample is estimated from data based on the observed distribution of the transverse isolation energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The results are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information.
