In this paper, a novel face detection algorithm is proposed which can detect both face and eye pupils efficiently at the same time. Interestingly, the results of face detection can be used to identify the regions of interest for pupil detection, and the results of pupil detection can be further contributed to detect more precise faces. A cascaded face filter is first constructed by using an adaboosting algorithm, which can rapidly filter out the non-face regions and keeps the possible face regions. Based on a radial-symmetry transform, the signal of eye pupil in a face candidate is considerably enhanced and becomes easy to detect. With an eye-pair checking process, the two pupil candidates are chosen as the outputted pupils if their corresponding face image obtains the highest verification score which is also larger than a predefined threshold. Experiments on the famous BioID face database have shown that 90.0% of faces can be successfully detected, and among the detected faces about 98% of eye pupils are detected with highly acceptable precision. © 2006 IEEE.

The article provides information on a workshop on the development of imaging systems for cancer prevention and preemption convened by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Imaging Program held in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Doctor Katherine Ferrara of the University of California discussed the function of ultrasound in breast tumor imaging. Ways to close the gap between development and application of imaging approaches were tackled in a roundtable discussion on cervix and skin cancer.

Combination Approaches in Korean information Retrieval: Words vs. n-grams, and Query Translation vs. Document Translation

Asian language information retrieval has been a challenge to existing information retrieval researchers, since Asian languages have different characteristics from Indo-European languages. For example, Chinese and Japanese lack word delimiters, and Korean does not allow spaces between words within its syntactic unit called Eojeol . In addition, they employ large sets of characters originating from ideographic Chinese characters. Although much research has been conducted on the above Asian languages in order to adapt or confirm existing information retrieval solutions that were developed primarily for English, there have been only a few Korean-related works reported internationally, and most of them have been done on small-scale document collections. Thus, this study presents large-scale retrieval evaluations on Korean to serve as a benchmark for further Korean-related information retrieval researches. In particular, this article investigates the following issues regarding Korean: word-based retrieval vs. n-gram-based retrieval, and query translation vs. document translation. Our monolingual experiments confirmed that, in Korean, n-gram-based and word-based retrieval show different retrieval characteristics for many queries, and that their fusion achieves better performance than either one alone in the case of the probabilistic model. The same was witnessed on query translation and document translation from cross-lingual experiments. In addition, we observed that naive document translation performs slightly better than naive query translation since the former performs query structuring similar to the Pirkola method.

ExaminingCf-ranking Methods for Text Structuring and Pronominalization in Korean

centering Theory assumes that entities realized in an utterance can be ranked according to their relative salience degree. This ranking called Cf -ranking (ranking of forward-looking centers) determines the likelihood that the entities realized in an utterance will be the center of the subsequent utterance, and it is one of the central issues in centering literatures. This paper deals with these Cf -ranking issues in Korean at the level of text structuring and pronominalization for coherent text generation. For text structuring, we compare several Cf -ranking methods by examining various centering-based metrics to evaluate local coherence of text, and for pronominalization, we compare them by examining previous rules for centering-based pronoun generation rules and our pronominalization model. In almost all previous works, surface word order was not solely employed for Cf -ranking, instead it was additionally considered to supplement the main ranking scheme based on the fact that linear order does not perform well alone. However, this study shows that due to the characteristics of the Korean language, ranking by surface word order is better than any other ranking method in most centering-based Metrics which depend on Cf -ranking, and it is also reliable in terms of pronominalization accuracy. Additionally we found that based on the Cf -ranking by surface word order, it is the most effective way for text structuring to maximize simply the number of utterance pairs whose first realized nominal entity in adjacent utterances is identical.

Breath figure templated self-assembly of porous diblock copolymer films

Porous polyethylene oxide–b–polyfluorooctylmethacrylate (PEO−b−PFOMA) diblock copolymer films were drop cast onto substrates from Freon (1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane) in a humid atmosphere. The pores in the films exhibit long range hexagonal order in some cases, depending on the PFOMA-to-PEO molecular weight ratio. Films with the best ordered pores were formed with PFOMA-to-PEO ratios of 70kDa:2kDa. The pores in the polymer films derive from water droplets that condense as Freon evaporates. The polymer stabilizes the water droplets, or “breath figures,” which act as an immiscible template that molds the porous film. Increased polymer hydrophobicity reduces the water wettability of the air/Freon interface, which in turn decreases water droplet nucleation, thus influencing the final pore size and spatial order in the polymer films. We describe how water droplet nucleation influences the final pore size and packing order in the polymer films.

The distribution of the cell shape in the polyurethane foam was measured by using the image processing method. In addition, the cell shape was simply modeled. The analysis limited within the range of elasticity was done by using this model. As a result, the prediction of the mechanical properties was tried by applying the rule of mixture to the foam. The validity was examined.

The electrochemical and electrooptical properties of an ionic conjugated polymer, poly[2-ethynyl-N-(p-cyanophenylazophenyl)oxyhexylpyridinium bromide] (PCEPB) were studied. The cyclovoltamograms of this polymer exhibited the irreversible electrochemical behaviors between the doping and undoping peaks. The oxidation current density of PEPB versus the scan rate is approximately linear relationship in the range of 30mV/sec120mV/sec. The exponent of scan rate, x value of PEPB, is found to be 0.6. The absorption spectrum starts around 800nm and shows a strong absorption band at visible region due to the interband transition of the polymer backbone, which is a characteristic peak of the conjugated polyene backbone system. The photoluminescence spectrum showed that the PL peak is located at 542nm corresponding to the photon energy of 2.29eV.

The field dependent magnetization of three mutually touching permalloy rings were investigated by means of the magneto-optical Kerr effect, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic simulations. Each ring has a width of 0.2–1.8μm, an outer diameter of 4μm, and a thickness of 17nm. Decreasing an applied magnetic field from saturation leads to the nucleation and annihilation of magnetic vortices, leaving at least one ring in a magnetically frustrated state. The properties of the magnetization reversal strongly depend on the ring width and on the direction of the applied field. Multiple complex reversal paths with vortexlike magnetization configurations are found.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer.
