Earlier studies on Simultaneous Multithreaded (SMT) architectures showed that performance of a realistic SMT architecture saturates early. This paper addresses our contention that a fixed hardware thread scheduling strategy cannot provide optimal results for various thread combinations. We propose an approach that partially schedules threads in the form of a detector thread at a nominal hardware and software cost. It offers the capability to adaptively switch thread scheduling policies depending on varioius situations. This article shows that there is much room for performance improvement for our adaptive dynamic thread scheduling approach. The results we have obtained by simulating a realistic SMT architecture show that no single fetch policy may outperform the rest more than 50% of the total time. We show that 27% is approximately the upper-bound of the performance improvement for SMT with eight contexts. This demonstrates that our approach may significantly improve performance with good low-throughput detection and fetch policy selection heuristics. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the most popular index to assessment the arterial stiffness. Currently, several non-invasive examination methods with single channel for PWV are announced. This paper proposes a non-invasive digital volume pulse (DVP) measuring system using a dual channel simultaneous measurement method try to meet the demands for home healthcare equipment which is easy to operate. Through synchronal technical in measuring DVP signals from finger and toe can achieves more precise time and substantially reduces the time spend in measurement procedures. In the other side, the proposed system developed an algorithm to locate the "foot of the wave" without facilitating of electrocardiogram (ECG).

In this paper, we propose a new framework based on data mining algorithms for building a Web-page recommender system. A recommender system is an intermediary program (or an agent) with a user interface that automatically and intelligently generates a list of information, which suits an individual's needs. Two information filtering methods for providing the recommended information are considered: (1) by analyzing the information content, i.e., content-based filtering, and (2) by referencing other user access behaviors, i.e., collaborative filtering. By using the data mining algorithms, the information filtering processes can be performed prior to the actual recommending process. As a result, the system response time could be improved and thus, making the framework scalable.

In this paper, we improve the accuracy of the conventional collaborative filtering algorithm by proposing a weighted sifting method. The weighted sifting method preprocesses the given customer data to generate an adjusted customer data which we believe contains less noise than the original one, and thus effectively discriminates the preference weights of items for each customer. We present two alternative calculation methods for weight adjustment, and our experimental evaluation shows that both calculation methods result in better accuracy than traditional collaborative filtering. © 2004 IEEE.

The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers similar to99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of similar to1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human genome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead.

In this paper, we describe the development of an appropriate metadata scheme for GeogDL, a Web-based digital library application containing past-year examination resources for students taking a Singapore national examination in geography. The new metadata scheme was developed from established metadata schemes on education and e-learning. Initial evaluation showed that a role-based approach would be more viable, adapting to the different roles of teachers/educators and librarians contributing geography resources to GeogDL. The paper concludes with concrete implementation of the role-based metadata schema for GeogDL. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

At the preoperative planning stage of CT-based computer-assisted total hip replacement, a surgeon determines the parameters such as size, position, and orientations of the implants based on interactive visualization of 3D models of the implants and hip joint bone. However, the parameters depend on surgeon's visual assessment of spatial relationship between the hip joint bone and implants. Our objective is to investigate objective criteria for determination of the optimal parameters and formulate an automated determination procedure based on the criteria. We objectified expertise in the preoperative planning of an experienced surgeon into quantitative evaluations and geometrical constraints, then formulated the automated procedure as an optimization problem. The automated planning system was applied to three cases of patient data sets and compared with an experienced surgeon. In the preliminary results, the planning parameters determined by the system were generally acceptable as a pilot experiment. © 2003, Elsevier science B.V. All rights reserved.
