Two Approaches for the Resolution of Word Mismatch Problem Caused by English Words and Foreign Words in Korean information Retrieval

In Korean text these days, the use of English words with or without phonetic translations are growing at a high speed. To make matters worse, the Korean transliteration of an English word may vary greatly. The mixed use of English words and their various transliterations in the same document or document collection may cause severe word mismatch problems in Korean information retrieval. There are two possible approaches to tackle this problem: transliteration and back-transliteration method. We argue that our newly proposed transliteration approach is more advantageous for the resolution of the word mismatch problem than the previously proposed back-transliteration approach. Our information retrieval experiment results support this argument.

This paper describes a TV program generation system using digest video scenes that are retrieved from video streams with the program indexes. The key features of the system are: (1) TV programs can be dynamically generated from digest video scenes selected by user preference. (2) Directions can be added using a happiness or sadness level based on the user preferences. (3) Personalized TV programs for an individual viewer can be made. The procedures taken by the system are as follows: (1) Conjunctive expressions between scenes are automatically generated; (2) Emotional expressions are automatically generated by user preference; (3) TV program metaphors are defined; (4) Direction templates corresponding to the metaphors are defined; (5) These expressions and definitions are coded using a markup language, and (6) Contents such as virtual characters and movies are synchronized. The resultant program can be shown on a TV set.

This paper proposes a self-organizing control strategy of a signal network for urban traffic flows. The signal network is described using a system of nonlinear oscillators with the nearest neighborhood coupling. The natural frequency, split and coupling constants of the signals are adjusted dynamically according to local information of traffic flows so that the desired network offset patterns are self-organized through mutual entrainment. We provide a preliminary analysis of the coupled oscillator system. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under dynamical environmental changes.

In this paper, we propose a multi-channel dissemination system with a clustering mechanism and a presentation technique for time- series on-line news articles on the Internet. We describe a detecting technique for articles whose topics are the same. These articles are called follow-up articles. In addition, we describe a calculating method for confidence level and scoop level assigned to news articles using temporal information. Furthermore we describe a prototype system called Carthage based on our proposed method. The system reconstructs all of the ar¬ticles to follow-up article groups and distributes the article group with several user interfaces. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Ranking fuzzy numbers is one of the very important research topics in fuzzy set theory because it is a base of decision-making in all application areas. However, fuzzy numbers cannot be easily arranged in order of magnitude because they represent uncertain and vague values. When two fuzzy numbers overlap with each other, a fuzzy number may not be considered absolutely larger than the other. That is, even though a fuzzy number may be considered larger than the other, it may also be considered smaller than the other. It means that, even when we consider only two fuzzy numbers, two sequences may be the ranking result at the same time. However, most of the existing ranking methods produce only one ranking sequence. They ignore other possible sequences due to the overlap between fuzzy numbers. We propose a ranking method which generates possible ranking sequences of fuzzy numbers, and represents them with fuzzy sets. Some numeric examples are also presented to show how our method ranks fuzzy numbers.

The rapid increase in functionality on a single chip in the last few years has increased the gap between the complexity of the design and the capability of commercial test tools. In particular the test needs for systems on a chip (SOC) are not addressed by existing tools. Because some of the cores integrated on a single SOC may not have embedded testability features, it is not always possible to use conventional design for testability (DFT) methodologies directly. This paper presents a novel approach for generating tests for complex SOCs which targets one module (or core) at a time, by extracting its environment elegantly in the form of constraints and storing it as virtual logic. information about the core processor and internal bus is used to reduce the size of the virtual logic so that a commercial ATPG tool can be used to generate tests. These tests are then automatically translated to system-level tests. The approach is illustrated with an example SOC based on the picoJava core.

To meet the demand for huge bandwidth created by the multimedia communications revolution, there is an urgent need to dramatically upgrade the existing telecommunications infrastructure. In today's infrastructure, fiber-optics is used in point-to-point transmission links, with all networking and services functions done electronically. To upgrade such an infrastructure in a cost-effective way, Wavelength division Multiplexing (WDM) technology may be used to transmit multiple optical channels per fiber. This way, network capacity may grow in response to increased demand. In addition, with the reconfigurability of WDM networks, network configuration may adapt in response to changing traffic patterns. To ensure successful deployment and operations of WDM networks, it becomes essential to have a comprehensive network control and management system which is versatile, robust, and scaleable. In this paper, we describe a network control and management system prototype developed under the Multiwavelength Optical Networking (MONET) project funded by the US government's Defense advanced Research Project Agency. The prototype system provides configuration, connection, fault, and performance management functionalities for reconfigurable WDM all-optical networks. The design of the prototype system follows the TMN logical layered architecture, and it is implemented on a fault-tolerant, CORBA-compliant distributed object computing platform which facilitates robust and scaleable operations.

The delay, throughput and capacity analysis of a DS-CDMA packet cellular network is carried out in this paper. A mix of data and voice user classes is assumed. Error free communication is required for the data users but is not delay sensitive while voice applications allow some degree of error but is delay sensitive. The QoS for data users is therefore the delay while for voice it is the bit error rate (BER).

LAN systems are widely used in distributed environment and it becomes more indispensable to manage distributed LAN systems in an integrated manner as enterprise-level networks. This paper describes the LAN fault management ensemble which has been developed by the Ensemble Team of INTAP NM (Network Management) Technical Committee. Ensembles represent specific solutions to particular problems of the networks as a collection of managed resources, functions and scenarios. This ensemble provides a method of managing an enterprise-level private network in particular fault management areas. OSI management is adopted as a platform to manage LANs which are assumed to be managed by SNMP or OSI layer management protocols. This ensemble takes a state-oriented approach which is better suited, and provides more efficient integrated network management for large-scale enterprise networks containing many resources to be managed, because SNMP management is performed by polling based on the stateless approach. In addition, this ensemble adopts international standards or publicly available specifications regarding the necessary management information. Integrated management is executed by the OSI manager and proxy agents. Proxy agents act as OSI agents and convert information gathered by SNMP manager/agents or OSI layer management entities to OSI. Various network resources such as FDDI, Ethernet and MIB-II are defined on the basis of definition of the ISO/IEC, IEEE and NM Forum standards and additional necessary resources are uniquely defined for this ensemble requirements.
