An automatic printed circuit board (PCB) inspection system called PI/l, is described in this paper. The system can inspect PCB artwork and inner layers to find trace faults such as open circuits, short circuits, pin holes, fine lines and narrow line spaces. PI/1 uses a line scan camera with 1024 pixels resolution to take images. The whole image can be obtained by the help of a scanning mechanism in the X and the Y directions. Continuous pictures can be taken without blurring, and the resolution is between 1/2 to 2 mils. The inspection method used in PI/1 is a type of design rule checking. It does not require a reference image and can tolerate changes in the inspection environment due to illumination and PCB positioning. The inspection algorithm has been implemented into a special hardware and the inspection speed is about 4 x 106 pixels/sec. © 1989 SPIE. All rights reserved.

A linear parabolic partial differential equation describing the pathwise filter for a nondegenerate diffusion is changed, by an exponential substitution, into the dynamic programming equation of an optimal stochastic control problem. This substitution is applied to obtain results about the rate of decay as |x| → ∞ of solutions p(x, t) to the pathwise filter equation, and for solutions of the corresponding Zakai equation.

Carlson received his B.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1970 and began his career with the Department of the Navy at the Naval Ship Engineering Center (NAVSEC). In 1972. he returned to the University of Michigan under the NAVSEC Long Term Training Program and received his M.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After returning to the Ship Arrangements Branch at NAVSEC. he was assigned as Task Leader for General Arrangements for the PGG PCG PHM. and MCM ship designs and was awarded Outstanding Performance Awards in 1974 and 1975. In addition he was Manager of the Arrangement Subsystem of the Navy's Computer-Aided Ship Design and Construction Program (CASDAC). In October 1979. he became Manager of the CASDAC Hull Design System. Currently. he also is enrolled in the M.S. of Computer Science Program at Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Carlson previously has presented technical papers at ASNE Day 1974 and 1978 as well as at the 1979 DOD Manufacturing Technology Advisory Group Conference. Besides ASNE. which he joined in 1972. he is a member of SNAME. ASE. and the U.S. Naval Institute. Mr. Robert A. Johnson is a Naval Architect in Surface Combatants Design (SEA 03D3). Ship Design Integration Directorate Naval Sea Systems Command. He received an Associate in Engineering degree in Drafting and Design Technology in 1959. his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1965. and his M.S. degree in Engineering Mechanics in 1970. all from the Pennsylvania State University. In 1973. he was selected for the NA VSEC Hull Division s Long Term Training Program at the University of Michigan subsequently receiving his M.S.E. degree in Naval Architecture in 1974. This paper presents an integrated approach to computer-Aided Ship Design for U.S. Navy preliminary and contract design. An integrated Hull Design System (HDS), currently under development by the Hull Group of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA 32). is the vehicle for the discussion. This paper is directed toward practicing ship design professionals and the managers of the ship design process. Primary emphasis of this paper, and of the development effort currently under way, is on aiding ship design professionals in their work. Focus is on integration and management control of the extremely complex set of processes which make up naval ship design. The terminology of the Ship Designer and Design Manager is used. The reader needs no familiarity with the technologies of computer science.

We present a systematic study to address a longstanding mystery in magnetic materials and magnetism, whether there is giant saturation magnetization in Fe16N2 and why. Experimental results based on sputtered thin film samples are presented. The magnetism of Fe16N2 is discussed systematically from the aspects of material processing, magnetic characterization and theoretical investigation. It is observed that thin films with Fe16N2+Fe8N mixture phases and high degree of N ordering, exhibit a saturation magnetization up to 2.68T at room temperature, which substantially exceeds the ferromagnetism limit based on the traditional band magnetism understanding. From X-ray magnetic circular Dichorism (XMCD) experiment, transport measurement and first-principle calculation based on LDA+U method, it is both experimentally and theoretically justified that the origin of giant saturation magnetization is correlated with the formation of highly localized 3d electron states in this Fe-N system. A large magnetocrystalline anisotropy for such a material is also discussed. Our proposed cluster+atom theory provides promising directions on designing novel magnetic materials with unique performances. © 2012 IEEE.

One of the main challenges for underwater applications, such as environmental monitoring and disaster management, is achieving efficient data transmission in environments where conditions change rapidly, and resources need for data transport are scarce. The capability of evaluating the Value of information (VoI) enables us to assess these problems by proposing a Value of information-based Situation-Aware Non-Linear Routing (VoI SANLR/VoI SANL) method. It aims to deal with critical event scenarios using BDI (Belief-Desire-Intention) logic criteria and prioritizing the timely uploading of data-driven information towards the destination. SANLR of VoI is developed to reduce energy consumption, end-to-end latency, jitter, and improve Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) in underwater communication networks. VoI SANLR introduces principles of priority-based methods and intends to address challenges in terms of underwater environment such as varying channel conditions, lack energy resources, and real-time decision requirements by using SANLR. Energy optimization analysis reveals consistent outperformance, achieving a remarkable 95% reduction in energy consumption compared to other techniques. Low latency is maintained, ranging from 2.5 to 0.5 seconds, showcasing enhanced efficiency and scalability. VoI SANLR demonstrates exceptional performance in both throughput and jitter. It achieves the highest data transfer rates, ranging from 100 kbps to 110 kbps, indicating outstanding efficiency. Additionally, the jitter remains consistently low, between 1.8 ms and 2 ms, ensuring minimal delay variability and improved communication stability. PDR consistently surpasses other techniques, reaching a maximum of 99%. Additionally, network lifetime analysis demonstrates VoI SANLR's superiority, exhibiting the highest network lifetime at each node and a significant 31.25% improvement at Node 100 compared to other methods.
