Motorcyclist behavior recognition (MBR) is a significant factor in improving road safety and preventing accidents. Inertial sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers, have shown promising potential for capturing the dynamic behavior of motorcyclists. However, existing approaches often require complex models and significant computational resources, limiting their deployment in real-world scenarios. This study presents a MotoNeXt architecture, which is a light deep residual network for correctly identifying the behavior of motorcyclists using data from inertial sensors. Our approach leverages the power of deep learning while maintaining a compact model size, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments. The proposed network incorporates multi-kernel residual blocks to facilitate the learning of hierarchical features and improve gradient flow during training. We evaluate our method on a publicly available benchmark dataset, MB-IMU, collected from multiple riders under various riding conditions. Experimentation has shown that our lightweight model achieves cutting-edge performance, outperforming a variety of existing techniques. In Scenario I, using accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data, MotoNeXt achieved an accuracy result of 78.90088% along with an F1-score of 81.56738%. According to Scenario II, which included additional sensor data such as VelInc, OriInc, and Euler angles, MotoNeXt further improved its performance, achieving an accuracy result of 83.29735% along with an F1-score of 84.95352%. The proposed approach offers a practical solution for real-time MBR, enabling the development of intelligent transportation systems and rider assistance technologies. Our experiments highlight the effectiveness of lightweight deep learning models in extracting meaningful patterns from inertial sensor data. This opens up opportunities for further investigation in this field.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies represent an important advancement in the field of AI, particularly for their capabilities in text and image generation. Over-the-air wireless federated learning (OA-WFL) can utilize the wireless waveform superposition property to achieve efficient model aggregation, thereby providing support for GenAI training and deployment. Therefore, this article investigates the support of OA-WFL for GenAI, focusing on potential applications and specific examples. We first discuss the OA-WFL and GenAI models, emphasizing their functionalities and the potential benefits arising from their interaction. We then explore its application in various GenAI scenarios, including large-scale edge device content generation, efficient distributed training of GenAI models, and reduction of bandwidth requirements and device load. Next, a framework is proposed to apply OA-WFL to diffusion models, such as those used in image generation, and validate its effectiveness through simulation results. Finally, we discuss prospective research directions for the application of OA-WFL for GenAI. © 2025 IEEE.

With the development and application of computer vision, many target detection networks are applied to the detection of floating objects in rivers. For the detection problems such as small targets easily missed and misdetected in water surface floating object detection tasks and difficult to deploy models. An edge computing-oriented approach to river floater detection is proposed. First, a four-fold down-sampling feature layer is added to the YOLOv5 network which enhances more target detail features and improves the detection capability of small objects. Second, CA (Coordinate Attention) is added to the Backbone to suppress background noise interference, and different pooling is used to accommodate different hierarchical features. Then, a bilinear interpolation method is adopted for up-sampling to avoid the loss of small object features. Design a data enhancement algorithm for small targets based on Mosaic to increase the number of small objects and enrich the training background. Finally, for the edge computing architecture platform, the channel pruning algorithm is used to prune and compress the model structure to adapt to the computing capability of edge devices. The experimental results show that the method can effectively improve the detection capability of the network for floating objects on the water surface. The detection accuracy can reach 93.6%, and the detection speed can be maintained at 36 frames per second, which can achieve high-precision real-time detection of floating objects on the water surface. © 2023 IEEE.

Semantic understanding of roadways is a key enabling factor for safe autonomous driving. However, existing autonomous driving datasets provide well-structured urban roads while ignoring unstructured roadways containing distress, potholes, water puddles, and various kinds of road patches i.e., earthen, gravel etc. To this end, we introduce Road Region Segmentation dataset (R2S100K)—a large-scale dataset and benchmark for training and evaluation of road segmentation in aforementioned challenging unstructured roadways. R2S100K comprises 100K images extracted from a large and diverse set of video sequences covering more than 1000 km of roadways. Out of these 100K privacy respecting images, 14,000 images have fine pixel-labeling of road regions, with 86,000 unlabeled images that can be leveraged through semi-supervised learning methods. Alongside, we present an Efficient Data Sampling based self-training framework to improve learning by leveraging unlabeled data. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves learning methods in generalizability and reduces the labeling cost for semantic segmentation tasks. Data-free knowledge distillation aims to learn a compact student network from a pre-trained large teacher network without using the original training data of the teacher network. Existing collection-based and generation-based methods train student networks by collecting massive real examples and generating synthetic examples, respectively. However, they inevitably become weak in practical scenarios due to the difficulties in gathering or emulating sufficient real-world data. To solve this problem, we propose a novel method called Hybrid Data-Free Distillation (HiDFD), which leverages only a small amount of collected data as well as generates sufficient examples for training student networks. Our HiDFD comprises two primary modules, i.e., the teacher-guided generation and student distillation. The teacher-guided generation module guides a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) by the teacher network to produce high-quality synthetic examples from very few real-world collected examples. Specifically, we design a feature integration mechanism to prevent the GAN from overfitting and facilitate the reliable representation learning from the teacher network. Meanwhile, we drive a category frequency smoothing technique via the teacher network to balance the generative training of each category. In the student distillation module, we explore a data inflation strategy to properly utilize a blend of real and synthetic data to train the student network via a classifier-sharing-based feature alignment technique. Intensive experiments across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that our HiDFD can achieve state-of-the-art performance using 120 times less collected data than existing methods. In longitudinal medical image analysis, most work focuses on regularly sampled images, or on tasks like regression or classification. However, in the clinical context, images are frequently generated irregularly due to factors such as cost constraints. This work tackles the problem of irregularly sampled longitudinal medical imaging by evaluating methods in segmentation and reconstruction tasks. We examine the reconstruction for real-life MRI from patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), where the model predicts future MRI scans from an arbitrary number of input images sampled at irregular intervals. However, experiments show that most models cannot surpass the performance of using an image from the same patient at a different time point as a baseline. Therefore, we conducted experiments on a synthetic dataset to better isolate effects in temporal learning. These experiments offer insights into model behavior and serve as a benchmark for validating models’ longitudinal learning capability, thus providing a straightforward method to assess temporal understanding in a controlled environment. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In recent years, against the backdrop of smart grids, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) interaction has become a hot topic. With the increasing number of new energy vehicles, handling massive amounts of electricity transaction data has become an urgent problem in need of resolution. Ensuring the security of the vast quantities of electricity transaction data has emerged as a significant challenge. Therefore, two data aggregation schemes are proposed in this paper, both supporting batch verification and privacy protection in centralized and distributed scenarios, respectively. Firstly, an improved Paillier cryptosystem is utilized to achieve lightweight encryption in the proposed schemes. In addition, a novel distributed data aggregation structure that combines a large number of geographically distributed fog nodes with centralized cloud servers is introduced. This structure not only meets the requirements of lightweight encryption and resistance against single point failures but also reduces the communication complexity of distributed data aggregation to O(n). According to the security proofs and experimental analysis, it can be demonstrated that both proposed schemes are effective and secure, meeting the lightweight requirements of modern smart grid systems. © 2025 IEEE. This paper presents an innovative, yet secure, eHealth framework that leverages Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) and blockchain technology to enhance transparency and security in the IoT-edge-cloud continuum. The framework incorporates SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to provide real-time, model-agnostic explanations for AI predictions, enabling personalized health monitoring and informed decisionmaking in healthcare. To strengthen data security, a consortium blockchain is employed, and AI is utilized to identify block data sensitivity at the edge within blockchain-integrated IoT architectures using Random Forest (RF) algorithm. This approach achieves high accuracy in validating block sensitivity, enabling efficient selection of authentication mechanisms in the proof of authentication (PoAh) consensus within the consortium blockchain. This ensures heightened protection for sensitive data and contributes to improved overall blockchain performance. The proposed framework is evaluated in an edge computing environment and demonstrates significant potential for advancing security and authentication in eHealth, representing a substantial advancement in healthcare technology.

Hierarchical structures are abundant in nature, such as in the superhydrophobic surfaces of lotus leaves and the structural coloration of butterfly wings. They consist of ordered features across multiple size scales, and their unique properties have attracted enormous interest in wide-ranging fields, including energy storage, nanofluidics, and nanophotonics. Femtosecond lasers, capable of inducing various material modifications, have shown promise for manufacturing tailored hierarchical structures. However, existing methods such as multiphoton lithography and 3D printing using nanoparticle-filled inks typically involve polymers and suffer from high process complexity. Here, we demonstrate 3D printing of hierarchical structures in inorganic silicon-rich glass featuring self-forming nanogratings. This approach takes advantage of our finding that femtosecond laser pulses can induce simultaneous multiphoton crosslinking and self-formation of nanogratings in hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ). The 3D printing process combines the 3D patterning capability of multiphoton lithography and the efficient generation of periodic structures by the self-formation of nanogratings. We 3D-printed micro-supercapacitors with large surface areas and a remarkable areal capacitance of 1 mF/cm2 at an ultrahigh scan rate of 50 V/s, thereby demonstrating the utility of our 3D printing approach for device applications in emerging fields such as energy storage.
