Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. AVENet: Disentangling Features by Approximating Average Features for Voice Conversion

Voice conversion (VC) has made progress in feature disentanglement, but it is still difficult to balance timbre and content information. This paper evaluates the pre-trained model features commonly used in voice conversion, and proposes an innovative method for disentangling speech feature representations. Specifically, we first propose an ideal content feature, referred to as the average feature, which is calculated by averaging the features within frame-level aligned parallel speech (FAPS) data. For generating FAPS data, we utilize a technique that involves freezing the duration predictor in a Text-to-Speech system and manipulating speaker embedding. To fit the average feature on traditional VC datasets, we then design the AVENet to take features as input and generate closely matching average features. Experiments are conducted on the performance of AVENet-extracted features within a VC system. The experimental results demonstrate its superiority over multiple current speech feature disentangling methods. These findings affirm the effectiveness of our disentanglement approach. Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices that are connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called "Awareness Inside", a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe that was designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems. © 2024, CC BY.

Integrating AI for infectious disease prediction: A hybrid ANN-XGBoost model for leishmaniasis in Pakistan

Addressing leishmaniasis infection remains a substantial challenge in KP-Pakistan due to the increased infection prevalence. Understanding its spreading tool offerings is a major challenge. We essentially design effective approaches to pinpoint its emergence and implement upgraded management strategies. This study aims to assess the prevalence of leishmaniasis infection in KP's four high-endemic districts (Bannu, Karark, Lakki Marwat, and Dera Ismail Khan) and estimate the potential future incidence. We executed a broad logical evaluation on data obtained from the pertinent district health departments of KP, using a novel hybrid ANN-XGBoost approach. We assessed its performance by equating it with frequently used models for infectious disease forecasting over time, comprising the ARIMA, LSTM, ANN, and XGBoost. We evaluated the model's precision using manifold indicators: MAE, RMSE, and MAPE. We developed the models using Python 3.11 software. The results show that the hybrid model outperformed all other models, attaining an MAE score of 82.2, an RMSE of 111.6, and a MAPE of 10.6, validating superior forecast accuracy. According to our proposed model, about 1,017 new leishmaniasis cases are expected per month by December 2025. These findings provide valuable insights for disease monitoring and intervention in KP. Advanced machine learning techniques can help policymakers improve resource mapping and come up with targeted management measures to stop the spread of leishmaniasis. Subsequent research should include other environmental and socio-economic variables influencing illness spread to improve predictive models. © 2025

This paper proposes a scheme addressing the challenges of integrating privacy-preserving distributed machine learning in the Internet of Things (IoT) context while improving the efficiency of the learning process and accelerating the convergence of the model. Specifically, it addresses the presence of non-independent and identically distributed (Non-IID) data and device heterogeneity, which occurs during parallel training and are common characteristics of IoT environments. In this context, SplitFed is a privacy-preserving technique that combines Federated Learning (FL) and Split Learning (SL) to enable fast and privacy-preserving model training on IoT devices. Through parallelism, FL allows fast and parallel model training. Furthermore, SL enables weak devices to train models through model splitting. However, SplitFed suffers from the increasing convergence time due to the FL parallelism introducing Non-IID and stragglers issues. In this paper, we aim to address the aforementioned problems by proposing a clustering parallelization scheme. As such, similar clients are combined based on their weight divergence and considered a single FL unit addressing the Non-IID problem. Moreover, to improve time efficiency and overcome the stragglers' presence, we offer a second clustering stage that separates clients by efficiency and uses FedAsync for model aggregation.

This paper presents a vision for a much-needed paradigm shift in Life Cycle engineering (LCE), which is termed Adaptive and Intelligent Life Cycle engineering (AI-LCE). To do so, interdisciplinary analysis of literature in domains of AI and LCE is performed. Needed concepts and methods are described: key enabling technologies are Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, and data lakes, which are becoming cost-effective and increasingly implemented in industry. Both artificial and human intelligence are used in combination. Its advantages compared with the conventional LCE include shorter time for changing activities in the lifecycle and the accuracy of changes made.

The rapid advancement of deep learning (DL) technologies has significantly transformed the domain of aerial image analysis. This systematic review explores the forefront of deep learning architectures specifically designed for the processing and analysis of aerial imagery. It offers a comprehensive examination of updated models, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and Transformers, highlighting their unique contributions and comparative effectiveness in aerial image analysis. This review critically compares these architectures through an extensive literature survey, focusing on their impact on enhancing accuracy, computational efficiency, and overall performance in critical aerial imaging tasks, such as classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation. Additionally, it sheds light on the innovative architectural improvements that have been crucial in overcoming traditional challenges associated with aerial image processing, such as handling high-resolution data, managing diverse and changing landscapes, and ensuring real-time analysis capabilities. By synthesizing current findings and identifying prevailing trends, this review not only charts the progress in the field but also outlines future research directions, emphasizing the need for more adaptable, robust, and efficient deep-learning solutions to meet the growing demands of aerial image analysis.

Federated learning extends the centralized machine learning architecture by enabling data privacy for its providers. The distributed structure of the emerged federated architecture imposes a problem of the data being not independent and identically distributed (non-IID), which drastically affects the performance of the learning process. While the majority of the recent works in the federated learning domain have accepted this limitation, only a few scholars addressed the non-IID problem straightforwardly. Nevertheless, these works lack the fundamental analysis of the data’ IIDness, and/or contradict the privacy feature of the federated learning paradigm. In this paper, we focus on evaluating the harmony of the participants by studying their data distribution and calculating their level of compatibility. The devised tool, in this work, is an assessment technique integrated within the federated learning framework to analyze the data distribution among the trainers. Our proposed method is proven by experimenting with several scenarios, and results show that our utility can fairly assess the selected participants before initiating the learning process.

Solving linear systems of equations plays a fundamental role in numerous computational problems from different fields of science. The widespread use of numerical methods to solve these systems motivates investigating the feasibility of solving linear systems problems using quantum computers. In this work, we provide a survey of the main advances in quantum linear systems algorithms, together with some applications. We summarize and analyze the main ideas behind some of the algorithms for the quantum linear systems problem in the literature. The analysis begins by examining the Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd (HHL) solver. We note its limitations and reliance on computationally expensive quantum methods, then highlight subsequent research efforts which aimed to address these limitations and optimize runtime efficiency and precision via various paradigms. We focus in particular on the post-HHL enhancements which have paved the way towards optimal lower bounds with respect to error tolerance and condition number. By doing so, we propose a taxonomy that categorizes these studies. Furthermore, by contextualizing these developments within the broader landscape of quantum computing, we explore the foundational work that have inspired and informed their development, as well as subsequent refinements. The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed, including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art & culture, socialization, commerce, and businesses. Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse and lack a holistic view of the entire process. Moreover, most surveys refrain from providing detailed guidance about the development process of the metaverse, including its impact on technologies, businesses, existing challenges, and potential research directions due to their lack of a macro and micro perception of such a topic. To this end, a more holistic, multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline and fill the gap in existing Metaverse surveys. To address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions, and monetization.
