Objective: Defect classification is an essential part of software development process models as a means of early identification of patterns in defect inflow profiles. Such classification, however, may often be a tedious task requiring analysis work in addition to what is necessary to resolve the issue. To increase classification efficiency, adapted schemes are needed. In this paper a light-weight defect classification scheme adapted for minimal process footprint - in terms of learning and classification effort - is proposed and initially evaluated. Method: A case study was conducted at Volvo Car Corporation to adapt the IEEE Std. 1044 for automotive embedded software. An initial evaluation was conducted by applying the adapted scheme to defects from an existing software product with industry professionals as subjects. Results: The results showed that the classification scheme was quick to learn and understand - required classification time stabilized around 5-10 minutes already after practicing on 3-5 defects. The results also showed that the patterns in the classified defects were interesting for the professionals, although in order to apply statistical methods more data was needed. Conclusions: We conclude that the adapted classification scheme captures what is currently tacit knowledge and has the potential of revealing patterns in the defects detected in different project phases. Furthermore, we were, in the initial evaluation, able to contribute with new information about the development process. As a result we are currently in the process of incorporating the classification scheme into the company's defect reporting system. © 2012 IEEE.

The use of virtual cluster for High Performance Computing (HPC) work has a great benefit of hiding the complexity of physical infrastructure while providing a familiar HPC environment for users. Nevertheless, setting up one is still a challenging task for most users. In addition, the ability to span a virtual cluster across a multi-site cloud can even create a great potential for users to harness a much higher processing power from the cloud. In this paper, the development of a multi-site virtual cluster cloud is presented. This is done by providing the cloud infrastructures tailored specifically for virtual cluster deployment along with related utilities such as web-interface monitor and command line tools. To realize this infrastructure, an overlay network is created using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to merge every site into a single broadcast domain. Moreover, a Multi-tier VPN network topology is proposed to enhance the communication performance among the multi-site cloud. A smart virtual machine scheduling mechanism is introduced to reduce performance degradation caused by network delays. The experimental results show that the virtual cluster works well with highly parallel task with low communication among task. Thus, this technology can be used to support many classes of important HPC applications.

Secure and convenient user identity management is particularly important to the success of EMR, EHR, and PHR systems. Unfortunately, widely-used identity management mechanisms that solely rely on username/password are inadequate to meet the strong security and privacy requirements for protecting sensitive user information and medical data. Two-factor authentication approaches that are more convenient and user friendly than existing solutions have been given top priority in the healthcare sector where the majority of healthcare practitioners and patients are not tech-savvy. In this paper, we present a smartphone-based identity management framework-SIM-to enhance the security and usability of user identity management in healthcare information systems. SIM leverages the popularity and computational power of smartphone. Within the SIM framework, a person employs a smartphone to centrally store and manage her identity credentials and authenticates herself to healthcare applications using two-factor authentication without typing any identity credentials. Moreover, SIM provides patients with a patient-controlled authorization mechanism to help patients manage the accesses to their PHRs in a secure and convenient manner. Using an existing EMR system-Arkansas Trauma Image Repository-as an example, we demonstrate that SIM can be applied to a real-world healthcare information system to enhance its protection of user credentials and sensitive information.

This paper is devoted to the problem of state estimate of discrete-time stochastic systems with Markov jump parameters. A robust algorithm-diagonal interacting multiple model algorithm based on H_∞ filtering (DIMMH) is presented for maneuvering target tracking when measurement noise is of unknown statistics. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.

The paper discusses the concept of innovation experiment systems in the context of long-lived embedded systems. These systems need to evolve continuously to stay competitive and provide value to the customer and end-user, especially in domains where the pace of change is increasing. Innovation experiment systems provide a natural mechanism that allows an embedded system, its architecture and underlying platform to continuously evolve in response to changes in the user requirements and system context. It uses a rapid feedback loop to evaluate the benefits of small variations to users with the intent of continuous improvements. The paper explores the architectural implications as the ability to continuously evolve and conduct experiences in the deployed product context in a safe and controlled manner must be supported by the architecture of the embedded systems. Finally, the paper illustrates these concepts using a case study concerning an infotainment system in the automotive industry. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Business and design decisions regarding software development should be based on data, not opinions among developers, domain experts or managers. The company running the most and fastest experiments among the customer base against the lowest cost per experiment outcompetes others by having the data to engineer products with outstanding qualities such as power consumption and user experience. Innovation experiment systems for mass-produced devices with embedded software is an evolution of current R&D practices, going from where innovations are internally evaluated by the original equipment manufacturer to where they are tried by real users in a scale relevant to the full customer base. The turnaround time from developing and deploying an embedded product to getting customer feedback is decreased to weeks, the limit being the speed of the software development teams. The paper presents an embedded architecture for realising such a novel innovation experiment system based on a set of scenarios of what to evaluate in the experiments. A case is presented implementing an architecture in a prototype in-vehicle infotainment system where comparative testing between two software alternatives was performed. © 2012 IEEE.

The application areas for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) Systems (UAS) are constantly expanding. Aside from providing an attractive alternative in applications that are risky for humans, smaller UAS become highly attractive for applications where use of larger aircraft is not practical. This paper presents the UAS Collaboration Wireless Network (UAS-CWN), a secure and reliable UAS communication mesh-network. This solution is proposed for the circumstances where a large number of UAS are deployed to cooperatively accomplish a mission such as surveillance in hostile environments. The proposed UAS-CWN system provides high fault-tolerance through use of information dispersal algorithm and meanwhile reduces the risk of information exposure to the adversaries via security-enhancing mechanisms. Our evaluation shows promising results. Especially, a UAS-CWN with high security-level settings can withstand losing 30% of the total number of unmaned aircrafts while steadily achieving above 96% data recovery rate.

We present a new particle-based method for granular flow *** the method,a new elastic stress term,which is derived from a modified form of the Hooke's law,is included in the momentum governing equation to handle the friction of granular *** force is also added to simulate the dynamic friction for the purpose of smoothing the velocity field and further maintaining the simulation *** from the Lagrangian nature of the SPH method,large flow deformation can be well handled easily and *** addition,a signed distance field is also employed to enforce the solid boundary *** experimental results show that the proposed method is effective and efficient for handling the flow of granular materials,and different kinds of granular behaviors can be well simulated by adjusting just one parameter.

This paper is devoted to the finite-time control problem for multiple manipulators, where unmodeled dynamics is taken into consideration. An effective coordinated control strategy is introduced, under which distributed protocols with continuous feedbacks are proposed. By applying the homogeneous theory for stability analysis, it is proven that the multi-robot system can be globally finite-time stabilized through our protocols. Numerical simulations on four manipulators with two degrees of freedom are presented to validate the effectiveness of the control strategy.

In this paper, we address the problem of multitarget tracking with unknown measurement noise variance parameters by the probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter. Based on the concept of conjugate prior distributions for noise statistics, the inverse-Gamma distributions are employed to describe the dynamics of the noise variance parameters and a novel implementation to the PHD recursion is developed by representing the predicted and the posterior intensities as mixtures of Gaussian-inverse-Gamma terms. As the target state and the noise variance parameters are coupled in the likelihood functions, the variational Bayesian approximation approach is applied so that the posterior is derived in the same form as the prior and the resulting algorithm is recursive. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter.
