The article reports the results of a usability test applying digital smartpen technology and interactive audio booklets to assist the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma in revitalization of the Myaamia language and culture. The usability test was conducted to determine if computer technology such as smartpens can provide an effective tool in the Tribe's home-based education initiative. Previous efforts in the use of computer technology language revitalization are reviewed and found to offer promise. The smartpen technology is reviewed, the interactive booklets and programmed smartpen are described, and usability test results are analyzed. Encouraging findings have led to interest in further development of additional technological tools that could be incorporated into "home learning kits." Additionally, by interchanging sound files, the smartpen software can be adapted easily to support language revitalization work by other communities. © 2011 ACM.

We present a new particle-based method for high viscosity fluid simulation. In the method, a new elastic stress term, which is derived from a modified form of the Hooke's law, is included in the traditional Navier-Stokes equation to simulate the movements of the high viscosity fluids. Benefiting from the Lagrangian nature of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method, large flow deformation can be well handled easily and naturally. In addition, in order to eliminate the particle deficiency problem near the boundary, ghost particles are employed to enforce the solid boundary condition. Compared with Finite Element Methods with complicated and time-consuming remeshing operations, our method is much more straightforward to implement. Moreover, our method doesn't need to store and compare to an initial rest state. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective and efficient to handle the movements of highly viscous flows, and a large variety of different kinds of fluid behaviors can be well simulated by adjusting just one parameter. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, an handwritten character recognition system based on acceleration is presented. The character recognition system using a 3-dimensional (3D) accelerometer, includes three procedures: original signal detection, signal processing (preprocessing and quantization) and recognition/classification. In quantization procedure, Trajectory Orientation (TO) and Curve Feature (CF) are adopted and compared. In recognition procedure, Fully-connected Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Left-Right HMM are both implemented and compared. The system, in the recognition of 10 Arabic numerals, achieves the Correct Rate(CR) of 99.05% and the Total Correct Rate (TCR) of 94.76%. © 2011 AICIT.

Foraging Behavior in Ant Swarms can be very helpful when applied to the protocols in Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs). When the Ant Colony Optimization Scheme (ACO) is applied to a protocol, larger number of paths are generated from the source to destination which helps in improving the packet delivery ratio because an alternate back up path is always available in case a path gets broken due to the mobile nodes. In this paper, we apply the ACO scheme on an already existing Energy efficient protocol Conditional Max-Min Battery Capacity Routing (CMMBCR) (C.-K. Toh, 2001). The CMMBCR not only takes care of the total transmission energy in the network but also the residual battery capacity of the nodes. Hence applying ACO scheme on CMMBCR makes it more efficient in terms of energy, packet delivery ratio etc. The efficiency of our proposed protocol A-CMMBCR is then established by comparing it with some of the other existing Energy aware protocols such as Energy-Aware Routing protocol (EAAR) (Dhurandher et al., 2009), Minimum Transmission Power Routing (MTPR) (Scott and Bambos, 1996) and CMMBCR. The results are captured in the form of a graphical format.

The paper introduces the design of the super monitoring system of the reaction kettle, the serial communication between the super computer and the multichannel distributional lower computer, as well as the design of monitoring surface which has been realized using VB. The system has the powerful data-handling capacity and the image display ability, and may carry on the control through the data transfer to the lower computer. The system has achieved the real-time monitor of the production process of the reaction kettle conveniently.

software engineering and computer science students conduct a capstone project during the final year of their degree programs. These projects are essential in validating that students have gained required knowledge and they can synthesize and use that knowledge to solve real world problems. However, the external requirements on educational programs often do not provide detailed guidelines for how to conduct or support these capstone projects, which may lead to variations among universities. This paper presents the results from a survey conducted at 19 different Pakistani universities of the current management practices and assessment criteria used for the capstone project courses at Undergraduate level. Based upon the results of this survey and similar work on Master Thesis capstone projects in Sweden, we present assessment rubrics for software-related undergraduate capstone projects. We also present recommendations for the continuous improvement of capstone projects. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we develop a novel context-aware approach for quality of experience (QoE) modeling, reasoning and inferencing in mobile and pervasive computing environments. The proposed model is based upon a state-space approach and Bayesian networks for QoE modeling and reasoning. We further extend this context model to incorporate influence diagrams for efficient QoE inferencing. Our approach accommodates user, device and quality of service (QoS) related context parameters to determine the overall QoE of the user. This helps in user-related media, network and device adaptation. We perform experimentation to validate the proposed approach and the results verify its modeling and inferencing capabilities. © 2011 ACM.

Research has shown that most learning in the workplace takes place outside of formal training and, given the swiftly changing nature of the field, computer science graduates more than most workers, need to be able to learn computing topics outside of organized classes. In this paper we discuss students' perceptions of the difference between formal and informal learning of computing topics, based on three datasets: essays collected from a technical writing course at a single university;the results of a brainstorming exercise conducted in the same course;and semi-structured interviews conducted at six institutions in three countries. The students report strengths and weaknesses in informal learning. On the one hand, they are motivated, can choose their level of learning, can be more flexible about how they learn, and often retain the material better. On the other hand, they perceive that they may miss important aspects of a topic, learn in an ad hoc way, and have difficulty assessing their learning. © 2011 ACM.

This paper presents an improved version of a simple rule induction algorithm known as ELEM. Compared to LEM1[5], LEM2[5], the new algorithm, ELEM, is faster as it requires fewer operations in its rule generation process. The results obtained have demonstrated the strong performance of the algorithm. The numerical experimental results demonstrate that the method of rule induction proposed in this paper is feasible. The key idea of this paper is that we compare the performance of LEM1 and ELEM for classification on landslide data sets and show the difference in computation speed and accuracy. And the results obtained are tested using artificial intelligence system. In this paper, we focus on basic concepts and an implementation of our methodology and the comparative results. From the results it is clearly found that ELEM algorithms can also be used incremental and in knowledge-based search process. © 2011 IEEE.
