This paper is devoted to the non-fragile controller design for the trajectory tracking of nonholonomic mobile robots. Using non-linear state feedback and proper coordinate transformation, the model of nonholonomic mobile robots is exactly linearized. Based on which, the non-fragile controller is designed by employing the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Simulation examples are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

This paper is devoted to the problem of state estimation for a class of dynamic system with multiple nonlinear-linear (NL) mixing state constraints. A computational algorithm was developed by C. Yang and E. Blasch to incorporate a positive definite quadratic form equality constraint into the Kalman filtering for the ground vehicle tracking. However, when the target tracked in multidimensional space, a single positive definite quadratic form constraint is not enough due to the involvement of other surface such as hyperboloid, paraboloid, or even plane. A analytic method of incorporating multiple nonlinear-linear mixing state constraints into the Kalman filter is presented here, and a sufficient condition is obtained that guarantee the existence of solution. The constraints may be time varying. At each time step the unconstrained Kalman filter solution is projected onto the state constraints surface. This significantly improves the prediction accuracy of the filter. The use of this algorithm is demonstrated on a nonlinear-linear mixing spacecraft positioning problem.

Headlight prefetching and dynamic chaining for cooperative media streaming in mobile environments

Media streaming in mobile environments is becoming more and more important with the proliferation of 3G technologies and the popularity of online media services such as news clips, live sports, and hot movies. To avoid disconnection and/or service breakdown when the users keep moving, proper data management strategies must be taken by all parties. We propose a two-level framework and a set of new techniques for cooperative media streaming in mobile environments. Headlight prefetching is designed for the cooperation of streaming access points to deal with the uncertainty of client movement and the requirement of seamless service handoff. For each mobile user, we maintain a virtual fan-shaped prefetching zone along the direction of movement similar to the headlight of a moving vehicle. The overlapping area and the accumulated virtual illuminance of the headlight zone on a particular cell determine the degree and volume of prefetching on that cell. Dynamic chaining is for the cooperation among mobile users to maximize cache utilization and streaming benefit. On receiving a media segment request from a mobile client, the streaming access point starts a search for possible supplying partners before attempting to a remote media server. If a qualified partner is found, the requesting client is chained to the partner and receives subsequent segments from the partner directly without server intervention. The client can itself be a supplying partner for other clients and naturally form a chain of users that are viewing and sharing the same media. Simulation results demonstrate that the integration of headlight prefetching and dynamic chaining can significantly decrease streaming disruptions, reduce bandwidth consumption, increase cache utilization, and improve service response time. © 2009 IEEE.

Recently, task allocation in multi-agent systems has been investigated by many researchers. Some researchers suggested to have a central controller which has a global view about the environment to allocate tasks. Although centralized control brings convenience during task allocation processes, it also has some obvious weaknesses. Firstly, a central controller plays an important role in a multi-agent system, but task allocation procedures will break down if the central controller of a system cannot work properly. Secondly, centralized multi-agent architecture is not suitable for distributed working environments. In order to overcome some limitations caused by centralized control, some researchers proposed distributed task allocation protocols. They supposed that each agent has a limited local view about its direct linked neighbors, and can allocate tasks to its neighbors. However, only involving direct linked neighbors could limit resource origins, so that the task allocation efficiency will be greatly reduced. In this paper, we propose an efficient task allocation protocol for P2P multi-agent systems. This protocol allows not only neighboring agents but also indirect linked agents in the system to help with a task if needed. Through this way, agents can achieve more efficient and robust task allocations in loosely coupled distributed environments (e.g. P2P multi-agent systems). A set of experiments are presented in this paper to evaluate the efficiency and adaptability of the protocol. The experiment result shows that the protocol can work efficiently in different situations.

It is possible for vehicles moving on a highway to communicate with each other, if they are equipped with wireless interfaces. These vehicles, equipped with wireless connectivity, are referred to as nodes in a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). The more the number of nodes involved in a network at a time, the more is the power consumed by them, thereby adding to the average power consumption of the network and the transmission time. In this paper, we propose an efficient routing protocol, named as Efficient Angular Routing (EAR), which finds the minimum possible path length between a source and a destination involving minimum nodes to transmit data. Information regarding the angular position of the nodes is exploited in selecting the most suitable node for transmission, thereby, achieving proper network connectivity among nodes with minimum power consumption. The proposed protocol has been compared with Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and DSR-with stale route removed (DSR-SRR). The results achieved establish the fact that the proposed protocol, EAR, outperforms DSR and DSR-SRR in terms of the average power consumption during transmission and the number of control packets used. The proposed protocol proves to work relatively better even under dense traffic conditions.

This paper describes a linguistic text mining tool for analyzing problem reports in aerospace engineering and safety organizations. The semantic trend analysis tool (STAT) helps analysts find and review recurrences, similarities and trends in problem reports. The tool is being used to analyze engineering discrepancy reports at NASA Johnson Space Center. The tool has been augmented with a statistical natural language parser that also resolves parsing gaps and identifies verb arguments and adjuncts. The tool uses an aerospace ontology augmented with features of taxonomies and thesauruses. The ontology defines hierarchies of problem types, equipment types and function types. STAT uses the output of the parser and the aerospace ontology to identify words and phrases in problem report descriptions that refer to types of hazards, equipment damage, performance deviations or functional impairments. Tool performance has been evaluated on 120 problem descriptions from problem reports, with encouraging results.

This paper presents a new support vector machine for simultaneous gene selection and microarray classification. By introducing the adaptive elastic net penalty which is a convex combination of weighted 1-norm penalty and weighted 2-norm penalty, the proposed support vector machine can encourage an adaptive grouping effect and reduce the shrinkage bias for the large coefficients. According to a reasonable correlation between the two regularization parameters, the optimal coefficient paths are shown to be piecewise linear and the corresponding solving algorithm is developed. Experiments are performed on leukaemia data that verify the research results.

The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. This paper is concerned with the problem of robust control for a class of uncertain stochastic systems with discrete and distributed time-varying delays via dynamic output feedback control. The parameter uncertainties of system matrices are assumed to be norm-bounded. The purpose is to design a dynamic output feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is robustly stochastically stable for all admissible parameter uncertainties. Based on the stability theory of stochastic systems, a new delay-dependent sufficient condition for the existence of such a controller is obtained and the corresponding controller design method is proposed in terms of linear matrix inequality (LMI). Numerical examples are included to illustrate the effectiveness and the benefits of the proposed method.

Fast block mode decision algorithm in H.264/AVC video coding

The recent video coding standard H.264/AVC show extremely higher coding efficiency compare to any other previous standards. H.264/AVC can achieve over 50% of bit rate saving with same quality using the rate-distortion process, but it brings high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can reduce the complexity of the codec by reducing the block mode decision process adaptively. Block mode decision process in H.264/AVC consists of inter mode decision process and intra mode decision process. We deal with reduction method for inter and intra mode decision. In this paper an efficient method is proposed to reduce the inter mode decision complexity using the direct prediction methods based on block correlation and adaptive rate distortion cost threshold for early stopping. The fast intra mode reduction algorithm based on inter mode information is also proposed to reduce the computational complexity. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 63.34-77.39% speed up ratio with a little PSNR loss. Increment in bit requirement is also not much noticeable.
