With today's heterogeneous access to the Internet, users will move between wired and wireless environments and between infrastructure mode and ad hoc mode of wireless communication. When a mobile node moves from an infrastructure connection and connects multihop to an Internet gateway, the performance will degrade and it may not be able to send all of its traffic via a single gateway. This highlights the need of load-balancing between Internet gateways, especially since the behavior of users today involves a multitude of parallel activities generating multiple flows. This paper proposes a solution that enables distribution of individual traffic flows via different Internet gateways instead of using one single gateway. The proposal includes extensions to mobile IP in order to handle flow mobility bindings. The performance of the solution is verified by simulation studies.

Flash memory has many merits such as light weight, shock resistance, and low power consumption, but also has limitations like the erase-before-write property. To overcome such limitations and to use it efficiently as storage media in mobile systems, Flash memory based storage systems require special address mapping software called the FTL (Flash-memory Translation Layer). Like cleaning in Log-structured file system (LFS), the FTL often performs a merge operation for block recycling and its efficiency affects the performance of the storage system. To reduce the block recycling costs in NAND Flash memory based storage, we introduce another block recycling scheme that we call migration. Our cost-models and experimental results show that cost-based selection of merge or migration for each block recycling can decrease block recycling costs and, therefore, improve performance of Flash memory based storage systems. Also, we derive the macroscopic optimal migration/merge sequence minimizing block recycling costs for each migration/merge combination period. Experimental results show that the performance of Flash memory based storage can be further improved by the macroscopic optimization than the simple cost-based selection. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Block motion estimation with full search is computationally complex. To reduce this complexity, different methods have been proposed, including partial distortion, which can reduce the computational complexity with no loss of image quality. We propose a distortion-based partial distortion search (DPDS) based on the magnitude of distortion and adaptive update of the matching order. We calculate absolute differences for all pixels in the predicted block point. Pixels are then sorted by the amount of distortion in a descending order for the matching process, which produces a scanning map. The sum of the absolute differences (SAD) of other candidate positions is then computed from this matching order. We also use an update of the scanning map by checking the increase in the number of absolute differences for the SAD value. The proposed DPDS algorithm improves the computational efficiency, compared with the original PDS scheme, because the accumulated value of the absolute pixel differences can rapidly reach the current minimum SAD value. The proposed algorithm is 4-13 times faster than the full search method with the same visual quality.

In this paper, we present a sensor network monitoring software, named NanoMon, which has a highly flexible architecture and is able to support various user requirements arising in their individual wireless sensor network applications in an adaptive manner. With NanoMon, users can specify their own sensor types and custom GUI components by using a simply describable configuration file; and it can be automatically integrated to NanoMon GUI framework to support user-specific sensor network applications. NanoMon employs a widely used database, MySQL, to manage sensing data and node information of several types of sensor network applications and also to provide sensor data history and conditional sensor data look up functions. NanoMon provides well defined packet form at and transmission procedure to communicate with various sensor network platforms with no dependency on any specific WSN platforms; and it can publish sensing data received from sensor networks to other external monitoring devices via Internet using well defined XML packet format and transmission procedure. For platform independency, NanoMon is implemented in Java language.

The sensor network features characteristics such as nodes being densely distributed, large quantities of nodes being scattered around, necessity of frequently changing the network topology as well as utilizing broadcasting system for communication. It also reflects a wireless network environment where batteries and computing powers are limited that it would be difficult to even make a decision on whether surrounding nodes are in credible conditions. Not only the numbers of nodes through which sensor nodes communicate exceed one, but additional research on password key control is required. It would be used on mutual authentication between nodes as well as authentication and enciphering by using limited sensor resources within the sensor network, which is based on the mesh structure. This paper makes statements on encryption algorithm, key management, security protocol, authentication and essential security elements of secure routing. It will be acting as basis of developing security mechanism, which will provide confidentiality of the MAC class level, authentication and integrity on a sensor network environment referred as the nano-Qplus platform.

For an odd prime p, n=4k, and d=((p 2k +1)/2) 2 , there are (p 2k +1)/ 2 distinct decimated sequences s(dt+l), 0lesl2k+1)/2, of a p-ary m-sequence s(t) of period p n -1 because gcd(d,p n -1)=(p 2k +1)/2. In this paper, it is shown that the cross-correlation function between s(t) and s(dt+I), 0lesl< (p 2k +1)/2, takes the values in {-1, -1 - radicp n , -1+radicp n -1+2radicp n } and their cross-correlation distribution is also derived.

In this paper, we propose a new adaptive CSMA/CA algorithm (NACA) that aims to reduce redundant transmission of IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN. In wireless sensor networks (WSN), energy consumption is one of the most important issues. Furthermore, it makes the network life-time longer by reducing retransmission. To achieve this goal, we improve the carrier sensing features in MAC layer of IEEE 802.15.4. When the network is busy, the MAC detects it and adaptively chooses the parameters of CSMA/CA mechanism to minimize collisions and redundancy of retransmission packet based on the NACA. We evaluated the proposed scheme with original 802.15.4 MAC on the ns-2 simulator. The results show that our scheme outperforms the original by about 15% in case of retransmission.

For an odd prime p, an even integer n, and d = p k + 1 with gcd(n, k) = 1, there are p + 1 distinct decimated sequences s(dt + l), 0 les I < p + 1, for a p-ary m-sequence s(t) of period p n - 1 since gcd(d, p n -1) = p + 1. In this paper, the cross-correlation distribution between a p-ary m-sequence s(t) and its p+1 distinct decimated sequences s(dt+l) is derived. The maximum magnitude of their cross-correlation values is l+p radic p n if I = 0 mod p + 1 for n = 0 mod 4 or I = (p + l)/2 mod p + 1 for n = 2 mod 4 and otherwise, 1 + radicp n . Also by using s(t) and s(dt + I), a new family of p-ary sequences of period p n -1 is constructed, whose family size is p n middot and C max is 1+ pradicp n .

In wireless sensor networks, micro sensor nodes dispersed in real environmental field have a constraint energy capacity, so energy-efficient mechanism for wireless communication on each sensor node is so crucial. Specially, the jobs sending and processing sensing data information from on sensor node to the others are more majority parts than merely sensing some events. Thus, energy-efficient routing protocol in wireless sensor networks is necessary for increasing the network lifetime and is also influenced by many challenging factors in terms of energy, processing, and storage capacities. In this paper, we designed and implemented a reliable energy aware routing (REAR) protocol for wireless sensor networks and evaluated the performance of REAR by comparing with existing routing protocols. REAR considers residual energy capacity of each sensor node in establishing routing paths and supports multi-path routing protocol for reliable data transmission. Furthermore, REAR allows each sensor node to confirm success of data transmission to other sensor nodes by supporting the DATA-ACK oriented packet transmission. Finally, the performance evaluation results show that REAR provides energy-efficiency and reliability related to wireless communication in wireless sensor networks.

This paper is concerned with the performance comparison of variant two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) and its application to face recognition under robot environments. Face recognition is one of the most important components for human-robot interaction (HRI) technology that naturally interact between human and robot through robot camera, microphone, and various sensors. We demonstrate that the 2DPCA-based approaches show the insensitivity to large variation in illumination and distance variation in comparison to the conventional PCA and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The comprehensive experiments are completed for ETRI face database. The robot platform used in this paper is WEVER, which is a network-based intelligent robot developed at Intelligent Robot Research division in ETRI.
