To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42 V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Swarm-diversity is an important factor influencing the global convergence of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In order to overcome the premature convergence, the paper develops a diversity-controlled PSO (DCPSO). DCPSO adopts swarm-diversity as a dynamic indicator to control the tuning of the parameters in a search, which in turn, can not only modify the swarm diversity, but also manipulate the exploitation and the exploration adaptively. Some experiments have been done and the results show DCPSO performs very well on benchmark optimization problems, and outperforms the basic PSO with a robust global convergent ability.

This paper deals with the effect of ground area-fill which affects the impedance of power distribution network (PDN) in the general desktop-PC motherboard. The outer area-fills connected to inner power/ground planes are modeled in equivalent cell-mesh structure. The unit cell is composed of circuit elements, encompassing the effect of DC and frequency dependent loss. Vector network analyzer (VNA) is employed for measurement and excellent agreement between the proposed model and simulated result has been obtained. Furthermore, the performance simulation for various arrangements of vias and area-fill is performed based on modeling method presented before. The vias connected with area-fill assess the impedance behavior of power/ground planes. According to the widely known strategy of placement of decoupling capacitor, several simulations are performed. All distributed vias at the area-fill have the same results of distributing all vias at the edge of area-fill at the view of impedance. This results support that the vias placed at the edge is more effective than the center ones in case that the noise source placed out of area-fill, this results have the same as this paper expected by performance simulation. © 2005 IEEE.

The paper describes a two-mass system for SiOG (silicon on glass) vibratory gyroscope so as to increase the stability of the device with wide bandwidth. A two-mass mass system has more than two masses and separates the resonant peaks of each mass. The variation of bandwidth and driving displacement according to the mass ratio of the two-mass system was analyzed, using MATLAB. This result was compared with that of a conventional single mass system gyroscope. In the 7 kHz resonant frequency design, the two-mass system has 395.3 Hz bandwidth, which is six times larger than a single mass system bandwidth, 58.5 Hz. The fabricated spring width is 3.4-3.6 /spl mu/m, which is 4 /spl mu/m in the design. Since the resonant frequency is influenced by the spring width, the measured frequency is 5.2 kHz, which is 7 kHz in the design. But, the measured bandwidth is 450 Hz, similar to the designed bandwidth (500 Hz). Also, the frequency difference between the driving and sensing part (210 Hz) is smaller than the wide bandwidth.

A new particle swarm optimizer (PSO), called dynamic double PSO, which is guaranteed to convergence to the global optimization solution with probability one, is presented based on the analysis of the standard PSO. Global convergence analysis is made using the F. Solis and R. Wets' research results. It can dynamically adjust the limit position with a positive probability that distributes within the cycle, located at the best positions of the swarm and itself, and shows a good performance to avoid premature convergence. The simulation results show the correctness and efficiency of the presented methods.

We present a large signal power device model consisting of MEXTRAM BJT models of a small unit device and external lumped elements explaining all the parasitic effects resulting from the interconnection layout. The parasitic elements are included in the model in a distributed way. For the unit device, the device with an emitter size of 24 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ is modeled by a MEXTRAM 504 BJT model, which shows accurate high-current behaviors such as Kirk effect, high-injection effect, and quasi-saturation effect. The power device with an emitter size of 480 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ is designed to verify the model. DC, small signal, and large signal measurements are compared with the simulation results using the model; both results are quite well matched not only on DC and small signal characteristic, but also on large signal characteristic under a self-biasing condition with the same input and output matching impedances.

We propose a hierarchical 3D facial modeling technique for realistic facial expression animation from the anatomical specification. We analyze the real human face to construct the facial model with a hierarchical biomechanical structure, incorporating a physically-based approximation to facial skin tissue, a set of anatomically-motivated facial muscle actuators and underlying skull structure. The deformable skin model has multi-layer structure to approximate different types of soft tissue. It takes into account the nonlinear stress-strain relationship of the skin and the fact that soft tissue is almost incompressible. Different kinds of muscle models have been developed to simulate the distribution of the muscle force exerted to the skin due to muscle contraction. The 3D face model incorporates a skull structure which extends the scope of facial motion and facilitates facial muscle construction. The facial muscle construction is achieved by a muscle mapping approach which efficiently locates facial muscles at the anatomically correct positions between the skin and skull layers. To generate facial expressions, the resulting hierarchical facial model is animated by solving the governing dynamic equation. For computational efficiency, we use a localized, semi-implicit integration method in the numerical simulation. The dynamic facial animation algorithm runs at an interactive rate and synthesizes various realistic facial expressions.

ESD and EMI problems and their possible solutions are addressed for the multi-layer power distribution network of high-speed digital systems. To prevent system from ESD damage, split I/O port ground with stitching element such as conductor or inductor is proposed, while stitching and decoupling capacitors are proved to be very effective for reducing electromagnetic radiation from the split power plane. Simulations based on 3D-finite difference time domain (FDTD) method are utilized for the analysis of practical high frequency multi-layered PC mainboard.

A multi-function phased array radar must search and track suspicious targets in its surveillance space in a real-time fashion. This paper targets one of the most important issues in the design of modern phased array radars: real-time dwell scheduling. We propose a rate-based approach to schedule radar dwells in a real-time fashion. We show how to reserve radar resources to guarantee the minimum radar operation without sacrificing the stability of the system. The strength of our approach is verified by a series of simulation experiments based a real phased array radar for air defense frigates.
