Federated Cubic Regularized Newton Learning with Sparsification-amplified Differential Privacy

This paper investigates the use of the cubic-regularized Newton method within a federated learning framework while addressing two major concerns that commonly arise in federated learning: privacy leakage and communication bottleneck. We introduce a federated learning algorithm called Differentially Private Federated Cubic Regularized Newton (DP-FCRN). By leveraging second-order techniques, our algorithm achieves lower iteration complexity compared to first-order methods. We also incorporate noise perturbation during local computations to ensure privacy. Furthermore, we employ sparsification in uplink transmission, which not only reduces the communication costs but also amplifies the privacy guarantee. Specifically, this approach reduces the necessary noise intensity without compromising privacy protection. We analyze the convergence properties of our algorithm and establish the privacy guarantee. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through experiments on a benchmark dataset. © 2024, CC BY.

In order to bolster future wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks, especially aerial platforms including high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). These platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In this regard, this paper proposes a multi-layer network architecture consisting of HAPS and UAV, where the former acts as a HAPS super macro base station (HAPS-SMBS), while the latter serves as a relay node for the ground Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The UAV is equipped with active transmissive RIS, which is a novel technology with promising benefits. We also utilize multiple-input single-output (MISO) technology, i.e., multiple antennas at the HAPS-SMBS and a single antenna at the IoT devices. Additionally, we consider NOMA as the multiple access technology as well as the existence of hardware impairments as a practical limitation. We compare the proposed system model with various scenarios, all involving the HAPS-SMBS and RIS-equipped UAV relay combination, but with different types of RIS, antenna configurations, and access technologies. Sum rate and energy efficiency are used as performance metrics, and the findings demonstrate that, in comparison to all benchmarks, the proposed system yields significant performance gains. The paper presents the schemes for manufacturing a microoptoelectromechanical (MOEM) accelerometer for measuring small accelerations. MOEM-accelerometer includes three subsystems: mechanical, optical and electronic. The mechanical subsystem includes an inertial body, mounted on a spring suspension in a case. The optical subsystem includes a laser, moving and fixed waveguides. The electrical subsystem includes a photodiode and electronic components. To measure microdisplacements that correspond to measured microaccelerations, an optical system based on the optical tunnel effect was used. The work considers the schemes of the optical transducer for linear and angular displacements of the mechanical subsystem. The moving waveguide together with the inertial body are combined into the mechanical sensing element that diverges in the case of acceleration. A technological process for manufacturing a MOEM accelerometer based on the 'silicon on insulator' technology with additional layers of nitride and silicon oxide for optical functional elements is presented. Depending on the character of the movement of the sensing element, the functional schemes of the MOEM-accelerometer were developed with various changeable parameters: optical coupling length, gap, overlapping area between the moving and fixed waveguides. The article analyzes the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed schemes of accelerometers from the perspective of their manufacturing feasibility and the predicted accuracy. The highest sensitivity (6.25 × 10-6 m-1) belongs to schemes with changeable gap between the waveguides. The dynamic displacement ranges of them is ± 80 nm. Lower sensitivity (1.25 × 106 m-1) belongs to schemes with changeable overlapping area. The dynamic displacement range may reach ± 300 nm. Sensor network localization (SNL) problems require determining the physical coordinates of all sensors in a network. This process relies on the global coordinates of anchors and the available measurements between non-anchor and anchor nodes. Attributed to the intrinsic non-convexity, obtaining a globally optimal solution to SNL is challenging, as well as implementing corresponding algorithms. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex multi-player potential game for a generic SNL problem to investigate the identification condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) therein, where the global NE represents the global solution of SNL. We employ canonical duality theory to transform the non-convex game into a complementary dual problem. Then we develop a conjugation-based algorithm to compute the stationary points of the complementary dual problem. On this basis, we show an identification condition of the global NE: the stationary point of the proposed algorithm satisfies a duality relation. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

This paper describes a revision of the classic Lazy Probabilistic Roadmaps algorithm (Lazy PRM), that results from pairing PRM and a novel Branch-and-Cut (BC) algorithm. Cuts are dynamically generated constraints that are imposed on minimum cost paths over the geometric graphs selected by PRM. Cuts eliminate paths that cannot be mapped into smooth plans that satisfy suitably defined kinematic constraints. We generate candidate smooth plans by fitting splines to vertices in minimum-cost path. Plans are validated with a recently proposed algorithm that maps them into finite traces, without need to choose a fixed discretization step. Trace elements exactly describe when plans cross constraint boundaries modulo arithmetic precision. We evaluate several planners using our methods over the recently proposed BARN benchmark, and we report evidence of the scalability of our approach. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Objective: Glucose homeostasis is the only way to manage diabetic progression as all medications used do not cure diabetes. This study was aimed at verifying the feasibility of lowering glucose with non-invasive ultrasonic stimulation. Methods: The ultrasonic device was homemade and controlled via a mobile application on the smartphone. Diabetes was induced in Sprague–Dawley rats through high-fat diets followed by streptozotocin injection. The treated acupoint CV12 was at the middle of the xiphoid and umbilicus of the diabetic rats. Parameters of ultrasonic stimulation were an operating frequency of 1 MHz, pulse repetition frequency of 15 Hz, duty cycle of 10% and sonication time of 30 min for a single treatment. In order to bolster the next generation of wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks (NTN), including satellites, high altitude platform stations (HAPS), and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV). To unlock their full potential, these platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and next-generation multiple access (NGMA). However, in practical applications, transceivers often suffer from radio frequency (RF) impairments, which limit system performance. In this regard, this paper explores the potential of multi-layer NTN architecture to mitigate path propagation loss and improve network performance under hardware impairment limitations. First, we present current research activities in the NTN framework, including RIS, multiple access technologies, and hardware impairments. Next, we introduce a multi-layer NTN architecture with hardware limitations. This architecture includes HAPS super-macro base stations (HAPS-SMBS), UAVs–equipped with passive or active transmissive RIS–, and NGMA techniques, like non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the multiple access techniques to serve terrestrial devices. Additionally, we present and discuss potential use cases of the proposed multi-layer architecture considering hardware impairments. The multi-layer NTN architecture combined with advanced technologies, such as RIS and NGMA, demonstrates promising results;however, the performance degradation is attributed to RF impairments. The paper presents project and its verification of a prototype integrated circuit containing an analog, programmable finite impulse response (FIR) filter, implemented in CMOS 350 nm technology. The structure of the filter is based on the switched capacitor technique. In circuits of this type, one of main challenges is an efficient implementation of filter coefficients, which result from several factors described in this work. When implementing such filters as programmable circuits, the values of their coefficients have to be limited to a selected range, i.e. a given resolution in bits. In the implemented prototype filter, the filter coefficients are represented by 6 bits in sign-magnitude notation, so they can take 63 different values only. In such filters, it is not possible to directly implement any frequency response of the filter. Each time, it is necessary to properly round the theoretical values of the coefficients so that they fit into the available range of discrete values resulting from the implementation. The authors of the work designed an algorithm that allows such matching. The paper also presents results of measurements of the prototype chip.

In this paper we deal with stochastic optimization problems where the data distributions change in response to the decision variables. Traditionally, the study of optimization problems with decision-dependent distributions has assumed either the absence of constraints or fixed constraints. This work considers a more general setting where the constraints can also dynamically adjust in response to changes in the decision variables. Specifically, we consider linear constraints and analyze the effect of decision-dependent distributions in both the objective function and constraints. Firstly, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a constrained equilibrium point, at which the distributions remain invariant under retraining. Moreover, we propose and analyze two algorithms: repeated constrained optimization and repeated dual ascent. For each algorithm, we provide sufficient conditions for convergence to the constrained equilibrium point. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the equilibrium point and the optimal point for the constrained decision-dependent optimization problem. Notably, our results encompass previous findings as special cases when the constraints remain fixed. To show the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis, we provide numerical experiments on both a market problem and a dynamic pricing problem for parking based on real-world data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
