In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, multiple exciton resonances with highly tunable properties are formed and subject to both vertical and lateral confinement. We investigate how a unique control knob, the twist angle between the two monolayers, can be used to control the exciton dynamics. We observe that the interlayer exciton lifetimes in MoSe2/WSe2 twisted bilayers (TBLs) change by one order of magnitude when the twist angle is varied from 1◦ to 3.5◦. Using a low-energy continuum model, we theoretically separate two leading mechanisms that influence interlayer exciton radiative lifetimes. The shift to indirect transitions in the momentum space with an increasing twist angle and the energy modulation from the moiré potential both have a significant impact on interlayer exciton lifetimes. We further predict distinct temperature dependence of interlayer exciton lifetimes in TBLs with different twist angles, which is partially validated by experiments. While many recent studies have highlighted how the twist angle in a vdW TBL can be used to engineer the ground states and quantum phases due to many-body interaction, our studies explore its role in controlling the dynamics of optically excited states, thus, expanding the conceptual applications of "twistronics". Software rejuvenation modeling of the virtualized Cloud Server has been studied. A software rejuvenation policy on the virtual machines and the virtual machine monitor has been proposed in order to ensure high availability of the virtualized Cloud Server. The multi-component system, composed of the virtual machines and the virtual machine monitor, which are structurally dependent, has been reduced to the multiple two-component systems. The state-control-limit-based rejuvenation policy has been proposed and the stationary probability density of the two component system state has been derived. Furthermore, the stationary unavailability of the virtualized Cloud Server has been modeled. Numerical experiments have verified the correctness of the probability density function and the feasibility of the rejuvenation policy. The state-control-limit-based rejuvenation policy leads to lower unavailability of the virtualized Cloud Server in comparison with the lifetime-based rejuvenation policy. © 2018 Totem Publisher, Inc. Construction of Barrier in a Fishing Game with Point Capture

This paper addresses a particular pursuit-evasion game, called as 'fishing game' where a faster evader attempts to pass the gap between two pursuers. We are concerned with the conditions under which the evader or pursuers can win the game. This is a game of kind in which an essential aspect, barrier, separates the state space into disjoint parts associated with each player's winning region. We present a method of explicit policy to construct the barrier. This method divides the fishing game into two subgames related to the included angle and the relative distances between the evader and the pursuers, respectively, and then analyzes the possibility of capture or escape for each subgame to ascertain the analytical forms of the barrier. Furthermore, we fuse the games of kind and degree by solving the optimal control strategies in the minimum time for each player when the initial state lies in their winning regions. Along with the optimal strategies, the trajectories of the players are delineated and the upper bounds of their winning times are also derived. © 2013 IEEE.

Distributed Least Squares Solver for Network Linear Equations

In this paper, we study the problem of finding the least square solutions of over-determined linear algebraic equations over networks in a distributed manner. Each node has access to one of the linear equations and holds a dynamic state. We first propose a distributed least square solver over connected undirected interaction graphs and establish a necessary and sufficient on the step-size under which the algorithm exponentially converges to the least square solution. Next, we develop a distributed least square solver over strongly connected directed graphs and show that the proposed algorithm exponentially converges to the least square solution provided the step-size is sufficiently small. Moreover, we develop a finite-time least square solver by equipping the proposed algorithms with a finite-time decentralized computation mechanism. Algorithms and performance analysis for stochastic wiener system identification

We analyze the statistical performance of identification of stochastic dynamical systems with non-linear measurement sensors. This includes stochastic Wiener systems, with linear dynamics, process noise and measured by a non-linear sensor with additive measurement noise. There are many possible system identification methods for such systems, including the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method and the Prediction Error Method (PEM). The focus has mostly been on algorithms and implementation, and less is known about the statistical performance and the corresponding Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for identification of such non-linear systems. We derive expressions for the CRLB and the asymptotic normalized covariance matrix for certain Gaussian approximations of Wiener systems to show how a non-linear sensor affects the accuracy compared to a corresponding linear sensor. The key idea is to take second order statistics into account by using a common parametrization of the mean and the variance of the output process. This analysis also leads to a ML motivated identification method based on the conditional mean predictor and a Gaussian distribution approximation. The analysis is supported by numerical simulations. Multipath transmission scheduling in millimeter wave cloud radio access networks

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications provide great potential for next-generation cellular networks to meet the demands of fast-growing mobile data traffic with plentiful spectrum available. However, in a mmWave cellular system, the shadowing and blockage effects lead to the intermittent connectivity, and the handovers are more frequent. This paper investigates an "all-mmWave" cloud radio access network (cloud-RAN), in which both the fronthaul and the radio access links operate at mmWave. To address the intermittent transmissions, we allow the mobile users (MUs) to establish multiple connections to the central unit over the remote radio heads (RRHs). Specifically, we propose a multipath transmission framework by leveraging the "all-mmWave" cloud-RAN architecture, which makes decisions of the RRH association and the packet transmission scheduling according to the time-varying network statistics, such that a MU experiences the minimum queueing delay and packet drops. The joint RRH association and transmission scheduling problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). Due to the problem size, a low-complexity online learning scheme is put forward, which requires no a priori statistic information of network dynamics. Simulations show that our proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-art baselines, in terms of average queue length and average packet dropping rate. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. In this research, the transient characteristics of a new type fuel metering system for aircraft turbofan engines using two types of pumps, a gear pump and a centrifugal pump, were studied by modelling and simulation. This new fuel metering system is capable of hydraulically unloading the operating state of each pump by the pump mode switching mechanism within the permissible range of the pump rotation speed and the fuel flow rate and it is possible to reduce the fuel temperature rise due to the pressure loss in the circuit in the operation region of the entire fuel system. In addition to this, by using a small centrifugal pump that can realize high discharge flow rate, it is possible to reduce weight compared to the conventional fuel system. However, when the pump mode is switched, unexpected fluctuation in the fuel flow rate can occur when a large change in the inlet pressure of the system occurs, the pressure control unit cannot follow the change, and the transient phenomenon cannot be suppressed. At this time, the pressure waveform generated at the time of changing the pump mode includes a high frequency component such that the pressure control unit, which plays a role of keeping the metering valve differential pressure constant, cannot follow up. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the frequency of the pressure change waveform when the pump mode was changed and studied the model of the fuel system inlet pressure in the gear pump mode. Based on that model, we propose a method to reduce the frequency characteristics of the pressure change occurring at the time of pump mode change.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).
