In this paper, first we introduce a label-based closest-neighbor trimming method to trim a phylogenetic tree built from nucleotide sequences according to the labels of leaves. Next, by replacing the indices of nucleotide sequences as labels of leaves with the nucleotides occurring in a position, we formulate a trim distance between two positions in nucleotide sequences as the LCA-preserving distance between the trimmed phylogenetic trees according to nucleotides occurring in the positions. Finally, we apply the trim distance to compare pandemic influenza A (H1N1) viruses with non-pandemic ones. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The goal of this research is a proposal of a standard model for vehicle system simulations. Recently, the CO 2 reduction and efficiency improvement of the energy consumption are important subjects in development of the vehicle systems. The new technologies related to vehicle development have continued to increase in complexity. For these reasons, the energy management simulation by the coordinated design of an electric system and vehicle system is required. The electrical behavior of the batteries becomes important to improve the energy management in the vehicle systems. The battery modeling technologies and the application example for vehicle system simulation are reported.

This paper considers a Bayesian approach to linear system identification. One motivation is the advantage of the minimum mean square error of the associated conditional mean estimate. A further motivation is the error quantifications afforded by the posterior density which are not reliant on asymptotic in data length derivations. To compute these posterior quantities, this paper derives and illustrates a Gibbs sampling approach, which is a randomized algorithm in the family of Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. We provide details on a numerically robust implementation of the Gibbs sampler. In a numerical example, the proposed method is illustrated to give good convergence properties without requiring any user tuning.

This paper examines the problem of estimating the parameters describing system models of quite general nonlinear and multi-variable form. The approach is a computational one in which quantities that are intractable to evaluate exactly are approximated by sample averages from randomized algorithms. The main contribution is to illustrate the viability and utility of this approach by examining how high computational loads can be simply managed using commodity hardware. The proposed algorithms and solution architectures are profiled on concrete examples.

In this paper, we investigate control and management of power distribution networks to meet the needs of vehicle electrification. We propose to divide a distribution network into several virtual microgrids (VMGs). Unlike microgrids studied before, virtual microgrids are flexible and cover the entire distribution network. Using VMGs, the control and management of a distribution network can be achieved in a hierarchical fashion. We propose to control the distribution network in two levels: a lower or VMG level and a higher or grid level. We introduce modeling frameworks for the two levels. At the VMG level, VMGs are modeled as stochastic hybrid machines. At the grid level, the distribution network is modeled as a finite state machine with variables. We illustrate the modeling and control approach for a typical distribution network.

In this paper, the H_2 optimal state-feedback control problem is investigated for discrete-time Markov jump systems subject to periodic coefficients and multiplicative noise. First of all, an exhaustive analysis is pursued to set up an H_2 performance criterion (H_2 norm), which can be characterized by the periodic solutions of two generalized Lyapunov equations. Based on the obtained H_2 norm, the H_2 optimal state-feedback controller is designed in terms of the stabilizing solution of a discrete-time generalized Riccati equation with periodic coefficients. Moreover, this stabilizing solution can be computed efficiently by the available iterative algorithm.

This paper proposes a robust control scheme that prevents an autonomous 4WS4WD vehicle from lane departure and wheel skidding in presence of road curvature and aerodynamic drag. The control objectives can be specified as various closed-loop specifications, such as lane keeping, wheel slip constraint and disturbance attenuation. An LMI approach is used to deal with these objectives simultaneously, which combines the quadratic stabilization technique with constraints on inputs. Simulation results show that the proposed controller effectively limits the combined wheel slip and improves the lane keeping performance.

This paper presents a novel Ocean Sentinel instrumentation buoy that the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC) is developing with AXYS Technologies for the testing of wave energy converters (WECs). NNMREC is a Department of Energy sponsored partnership between Oregon State University (OSU), the University of Washington (UW), and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The Ocean Sentinel instrumentation buoy is a surface buoy based on the 6-meter NOMAD (Navy Oceanographic Meteorological Automatic Device) design. The Ocean Sentinel will provide power analysis and data acquisition, environmental monitoring, as well as an active converter interface to control power dissipation to an on-board electrical load. The WEC under test and the instrumentation buoy will be moored with approximately 100 meters separation, connected by a power and communication umbilical cable. The presentation of the paper will include the deployment and example testing of wave energy devices using the Ocean Sentinel instrumentation buoy.

This paper is devoted to the modeling problem of hypersonic vehicle with significant couplings. An integrated approach is developed to analytically model the dynamics of hypersonic vehicle, in which the effects of variable mass, spherical rotating earth, and couplings among the sub-models are considered. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis is conducted using the general data of a hypersonic vehicle. The simulation results show that the maximum of the Coriolis force can reach values up to 7.02% of the vehicle weight, and that the thermal load determined by the nonuniform aerodynamic heating and the properties of the structure has a significant influence on the elastic deformation.
