To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm. ©2007 IEEE.

We present an algebraic characterization of the standard commutative relaxation of the word problem in terms of a polynomial equality. We then consider a variant of the commutative word problem, referred to as the "Zero-to-All reachability" problem. We show that this problem is equivalent to a finite number of commutative word problems, and we use this insight to derive necessary conditions for Zero-to-All reachability. We conclude with a set of illustrative examples.

Disaster management, before, during, and after the event, is dynamic, complex, and ill-defined, and the events themselves are rare and diverse due to the many characteristics that define them. Prior decisions may be thoroughly documented via after action reports, but these may not cover every issue as frequently unique and unanticipated events arise during each emergency. The nature of the decisions, where they are made, who makes them, the data and information resources required to make and monitor them, and the location of available knowledge to drive them may sometimes be unknown, unavailable, or both. This paper describes the research activities of Project Ensayo, which seeks to support and enable multiple research projects investigating processes, functions and structures present at Emergency Operations Centers, including situational awareness, knowledge management, inferences from dynamic data, disaster management and mechanisms of command, control, communication and coordination.

In this paper, the problem of identifying stochastic linear continuous-time systems from noisy input/output data is addressed. The input of the system is assumed to be non-Gaussian, whereas the noises contaminating the data are assumed to be Gaussian. The fourth-order cumulants of the input/output data are then (asymptotically) insensitive to the noises, that can be coloured and/or mutually correlated. Two estimators based on this noise-cancellation property are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithms are assessed through a numerical simulation.

A new edition in a single volume Over the past decade, more and more sophisticaced mathematical tools and approaches have been incorporated in the ?eld of control of in?nite dim- sional systems. This was motivated by a whole range of challenging appli- tions arising from new phenomenologicalstudies, technologicaldevelopments, and more stringent design requirements. At the same time, researchers and advanced engineers have been steadily using an impressive amount of very sophisticated mathematics in their analysis, synthesis, and design of systems. Whatwasregardedastooabstract,specialized,ortheoreticalin1990hasnow become a standard part of the toolkit. The decision to produce a second edition of the original 1992–1993 t- volume edition is further motivated by several other factors. Over the years the book has been recognizedas a key referencein the ?eld, and a revised and corrected edition was desirable. Even if some good books on the control of in?nite dimensional linear systems have appeared since then, we felt that the original material has not aged too much and that the breadth of its presen- tion is still attractiveand very competitive. The result is a completely revised and corrected second edition in a single convenient volume with integrated bibliography and index.

This paper describes an ongoing Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site program funded by the National science Foundation (NSF) since 2002 at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). The goal of the program was to bring students from around the United States and Puerto Rico to campus for an eight-week summer program and provide them with a multidisciplinary research experience in the areas of micro mechatronics and smart structures. The program objectives, recruitment strategies, organization and evaluation are summarized. To date, 54 students including 11 minority and 10 female students from 27 different institutions from around the United States and Puerto Rico have participated in the program. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The article provides information on a workshop on the development of imaging systems for cancer prevention and preemption convened by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Imaging Program held in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Doctor Katherine Ferrara of the University of California discussed the function of ultrasound in breast tumor imaging. Ways to close the gap between development and application of imaging approaches were tackled in a roundtable discussion on cervix and skin cancer.

The bias compensated least squares approach for errors-in-variables model identification is examined in a new framework, where it is allowed to prefilter the observed input-output data prior to the estimation process. A statistical analysis of the estimation algorithm is presented. Subsequently, it is shown how these prefilters and the weighting matrix can be tuned in order to optimize the estimation accuracy. According to the numerical simulation results, the covariance matrix of the estimated parameter vector is very close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound for the estimation problem

New stability synthesis for a class of affine nonlinear networked control systems within FMS plants is developed via the sanipled-data approach. Such a networked control system consists of an affine nonlinear plant and a linear digital controller as well as short-range network induced time delays. It is viewed as a typical hybrid system model with network-induced delays. Sufficient conditions for stability synthesis of this class of affine nonlinear networked control systems are derived and the application illustrated by a simulated example. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the parameter estimation of a relatively general class of nonlinear dynamic systems. A Maximum Likelihood (ML) framework is employed in the interests of statistical efficiency, and it is illustrated how an Expectation Maximisation (EM) algorithm may be used to compute these ML estimates. An essential ingredient is the employment of so-called “particle smoothing„ methods to compute required conditional expectations via a Monte Carlo approach. A simulation example demonstrates the efficacy of these techniques.
