Space communication protocol standards-transport protocol (SCPS-TP) is a set of extensions to transmission control protocol (TCP) aimed at improving TCP performance over space links. Some work has been done on performance evaluation of SCPS-TP based on its methodology, or by testing it as an isolated entity or over satellite that deploys performance enhancing proxies (PEPs). It is needed to have an experimental evaluation of SCPS-TP in coping with heavy noise using the complete SCPS protocol stack, especially by comparing it with state-of-the-art terrestrial TCP. This paper describes an experimental evaluation of SCPS-TP over congestion free, error-prone, high-latency, point-to-point space links, through file transfer experiment by running the actual SCPS protocol stacks via a testbed. The results reveal that SCPS-TP is more tolerant of heavy noise and has significant throughput advantages over TCP. The performance advantage of SCPS-TP in a lossy link is attributed to its novel SNACK scheme and the advantage in asymmetric channel is from the contributions of the channel rate control and acknowledgment reduction mechanisms.

The authors created a Web-based integrated education support system that unified the data in the administrative system and the education system in a university. The purpose of the system was to make the administrative system and education system data that had previously been separated seamless, and to implement seamless access from inside and outside the university while maintaining security. Moreover, the authors emphasized the development of a portal site as a point of contact for the system. As a result of using software packages and existing technology for the other servers and databases, and making a policy of not changing the administrative system at all, the authors were able to create the system in a short period of 5 months. After the system was operational, preparation and review for class could be done at home, and evaluations of reports and final determinations of grades could be done from outside the university. This confirmed that the education system was effective. Finally, the authors looked at the trouble and performance problems that occurred involving local rules in the business department during operation, as well as countermeasures for them. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Many interesting design problems encountered in signal processing and control turn out to depend on a set of decision variables that can only take a finite number of values, i.e., they are quantized. For example, in power distribution networks there are only a finite number (typically small) of generators and possible transmission options. Other examples abound in many fields, e.g., on-off control problems, quantization of audio signals for CD-production, filter banks for audio and video compression, switch-mode power supplies used, e.g., in laptop computers, and so on. All of these problems share the common feature that the decision space is quantized. The associated design problems require special attention since they are inherently "nonconvex" in a technical sense. This paper gives an overview of quantization issues in signal processing and control and points to recent research aimed at providing designs that can be utilized in practice. © Institution of Engineers, Australia 2005.

The goal of this work is to develop a robot-assisted surgery system for spinal fusion, which is composed of a robot, a surgical planning system, and an optical tracking system. The system plays roles of assisting surgeon for inserting a pedicle screw in spinal fusion. Compared to pure navigation systems as well as conventional methods for spinal fusion, it is able to achieve better accuracy through compensating for the portending movement of the surgical area. Furthermore, the robot can position and guide needles, drills, and other surgical instruments or conducts drilling/screwing directly. In preoperative surgery, the desired entry point, orientation, and depth of surgical tools for pedicle screw insertion are determined by the surgical planning system based on CT or MR images. Intra-operatively, the position information on the surgical instruments and the targeted surgical areas are obtained by the tracking system and, using that information, a robot conducts the preplanned operation depending on its role while compensating the movement of the surgical area. Two exemplary experiments employing the developed robot-assisted surgery system are conducted. © 2005 IEEE.

In constrained linear model predictive control a quadratic program must be solved on-line at each control step. If zero is feasible the resultant static nonlinearity is sector bound. We show that the nonlinearity is also monotone nondecreasing and slope restricted; furthermore it may be expressed as the gradient of a convex potential function. Hence we show the existence of Zames-Falb multipliers for such a nonlinearity. For completeness, we construct such multipliers both for the general case of multi-input multi-output static nonlinearities and for the particular case where the nonlinearity arises from a quadratic program. We also express the results in terms of integral quadratic constraints. These multipliers may be used in a general and versatile analysis of the robust stability of constrained model predictive control.

This paper aims at generalizing the well-known Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem by considering additional constraints. The first type of constraints we consider requires the interpolation function to be of a given degree. Several results are provided for different degree constraints. These results offer feasibility tests via linear matrix inequalities. We have identified a number of degree constraints for which the feasibility tests are exact. For other degree constraints, we offer a relaxation scheme for checking the feasibility. The second type of constraints we study is about spectral zero assignment, which demands the zeros of the spectral factorization of the interpolation function to be at given locations. This problem can be solved using an iterative algorithm by Byrnes, Georgiou and Linquist. However, we provide a much faster iterative algorithm for this problem, although a proof of convergence is yet to be offered.

It is well-known that the zeros of sampled-data models for deterministic systems depend on the hold device used to generate the continuous-time system input. A dual result holds also for stochastic systems. In the latter case, the zeros of the sampled-data model depend on the anti-aliasing filter used before sampling. Generically, extra zeros appear in both deterministic and stochastic discrete-time models. These zeros have no continuous-time counterpart. This paper presents an anti-aliasing filter design, such that the stochastic sampling zeros are asymptotically assigned to the origin, for fast sampling rates. The design procedure relies only on the system relative degree.

This paper aims at generalizing the well-known covariance extension problem by considering additional constraints. We first consider degree constraints, i.e., we require the interpolation function to have a given degree. Several results are offered for testing the feasibility via linear matrix inequalities. We then study the spectral zero assignment problem where the the interpolation function is constrained to have the zeros of the spectral factorization of the interpolation function at given locations. A fast iterative algorithm is provided for this problem. Numerical studies support that this algorithm works extremely well, although we are yet to offer a theoretical proof for the convergence of the algorithm.

This paper proposes a control strategy for input constrained second order systems with one unstable mode. For this class of systems, the largest region of attraction under bounded control is bounded in one direction whilst infinite in the other. Standard MPC type control with guaranteed stability either requires large control horizons or typically yields a much smaller region of attraction. We show that by extending MPC concepts a control strategy with a horizon of one is developed that provides asymptotic stability with the largest possible region of attraction under bounded control.

This paper presents a new run-to-run control scheme to reduce overlay misalignment errors in steppers and demonstrates the feasibility of the scheme by real-time experimental tests. The overlay misalignment error mainly depends on two factors: one is the internal dynamics of photo processes and steppers and the other is the process history of lots, such as base equipment and reticles. Based on these observations, a new control scheme was designed to find the stepper inputs minimizing the misalignment errors based on history data analysis and neural network models. Moreover, we demonstrated that the proposed control scheme reduces the spec-out ratios as well as the number of engagements of the send-ahead wafer process, which thereby results in the increase of product yield in semiconductor manufacturing. © 2005 IEEE.
