Safe Intersection Coordination with Mixed Traffic: From Estimation to control

In this paper, we propose an integrated framework for safe intersection coordination of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in mixed traffic. An intelligent intersection is introduced as a central node to orchestrate state data sharing among connected agents and enable CAV to acknowledge the presence of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) beyond the line of sight of onboard sensors. Since state data shared between agents might be uncertain or delayed, we design the intelligent intersection to safely compensate for these uncertainties and delays using robust set estimation and forward reachability analysis. When the intersection receives state data from an agent, it first generates a zonotope to capture the possible measurement noise in the state estimate. Then, to compensate for communication and processing delays, it uses forward reachability analysis to enlarge the set to capture all the possible states the agent could have occupied throughout the delays. Finally, using the resulting set as the initial condition, a distributed model predictive control onboard the CAV will plan an invariant safe motion by considering the worst-case behavior of human drivers. As a result, the vehicle is guaranteed to be safe while driving through the intersection. A prototype of our proposed framework is implemented using the Small-Vehicles-for-Autonomy (SVEA) platform. The effectiveness of our framework is evaluated in experiments based on a challenging scenario where the collision would have occurred without efficient coordination.

Learning Communities from Equilibria of Nonlinear Opinion Dynamics

This paper studies community detection for a nonlinear opinion dynamics model from its equilibria. It is assumed that the underlying network is generated from a stochastic block model with two communities, where agents are assigned with community labels and edges are added independently based on these labels. Agents update their opinions following a nonlinear rule that incorporates saturation effects on interactions. It is shown that clustering based on a single equilibrium can detect most community labels (i.e., achieving almost exact recovery), if the two communities differ in size and link probabilities. When the two communities are identical in size and link probabilities, and the inter-community connections are denser than intra-community ones, the algorithm can achieve almost exact recovery under negative influence weights but fails under positive influence weights. Utilizing fixed point equations and spectral methods, we also propose a detection algorithm based on multiple equilibria, which can detect communities with positive influence weights. Resilient distributed optimization under mobile malicious attacks

This article addresses the distributed optimization problem in the presence of malicious adversaries that can move within the network and induce faulty behaviors in the attacked nodes. We first investigate the vulnerabilities of a consensus-based secure distributed optimization protocol under mobile adversaries. Then, a modified resilient distributed optimization algorithm is proposed. We develop conditions on the network structure for both complete and non-complete directed graph cases, under which the proposed algorithm guarantees that the estimates by regular nodes converge to the convex combination of the minimizers of their local functions. Simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of our approach.

— Social learning provides a fundamental framework in economics and social sciences for studying interactions among rational agents who observe each other’s actions but lack direct access to individual beliefs. This paper investigates a specific social learning paradigm known as Word-of-Mouth (WoM), where a series of agents seeks to estimate the state of a dynamical system. The first agent receives noisy measurements of the state, while each subsequent agent relies solely on a degraded version of her predecessor’s estimate. A defining feature of WoM is that the final agent’s belief is publicly broadcast and adopted by all agents, in place of their own. We analyze this setting both theoretically and through numerical simulations, showing that some agents benefit from using the public belief broadcast by the last agent, while others suffer from performance deterioration. © 2025, CC BY.

In the second segment of the tutorial, we transition from the granularity of local interpretability to a broader exploration of eXplainable AI (XAI) methods. Building on the specific focus of the first part, which delved into Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), this section takes a more expansive approach. We will navigate through various XAI techniques of more global nature, covering counterfactual explanations, equation discovery, and the integration of physics-informed AI. Unlike the initial part, which concentrated on two specific methods, this section offers a general overview of these broader classes of techniques for explanation. The objective is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse strategies available for making complex machine learning models interpretable on a more global scale.

Low-Complexity control for a Class of Uncertain MIMO Nonlinear systems under Generalized Time-Varying Output Constraints

This paper introduces a novel control framework to address the satisfaction of multiple time-varying output constraints in uncertain high-order MIMO nonlinear control systems. Unlike existing methods, which often assume that the constraints are always decoupled and feasible, our approach can handle coupled time-varying constraints even in the presence of potential infeasibilities. First, it is shown that satisfying multiple constraints essentially boils down to ensuring the positivity of a scalar variable, representing the signed distance from the boundary of the time-varying output-constrained set. To achieve this, a single consolidating constraint is designed that, when satisfied, guarantees convergence to and invariance of the time-varying output-constrained set within a user-defined finite time. Next, a novel robust and low-complexity feedback controller is proposed to ensure the satisfaction of the consolidating constraint. Additionally, we provide a mechanism for online modification of the consolidating constraint to find a least violating solution when the constraints become mutually infeasible for some time. Finally, a simulation study validates the proposed approach. ©1963-2012 IEEE.

We address an optimal control problem for linear stochastic systems with unknown noise distributions and joint chance constraints using conformal prediction. Our approach involves designing a feedback controller to maintain an error system within a prediction region (PR). We define PRs as sublevel sets of a nonconformity score over error trajectories, enabling the handling of joint chance constraints. We propose two methods to design feedback control and PRs: one through direct optimization over error trajectory samples, and the other indirectly using the S-procedure with a disturbance ellipsoid obtained from data. By tightening constraints with PRs, we solve a relaxed problem to synthesize a feedback policy. Our method ensures reliable probabilistic guarantees based on marginal coverage, independent of data size. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper considers risk-averse learning in convex games involving multiple agents that aim to minimize their individual risk of incurring significantly high costs. Specifically, the agents adopt the conditional value at risk (CVaR) as a risk measure with possibly different risk levels. To solve this problem, we propose a first-order risk-averse leaning algorithm, in which the CVaR gradient estimate depends on an estimate of the Value at Risk (VaR) value combined with the gradient of the stochastic cost function. Although estimation of the CVaR gradients using finitely many samples is generally biased, we show that the accumulated error of the CVaR gradient estimates is bounded with high probability. Moreover, assuming that the risk-averse game is strongly monotone, we show that the proposed algorithm converges to the risk-averse Nash equilibrium. We present numerical experiments on a Cournot game example to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

We consider the control design of stochastic discrete-time linear multi-agent systems (MASs) under a global signal temporal logic (STL) specification to be satisfied at a predefined probability. By decomposing the dynamics into deterministic and error components, we construct a probabilistic reachable tube (PRT) as the Cartesian product of reachable sets of the individual error systems driven by disturbances lying in confidence regions (CRs) with a fixed probability. By bounding the PRT probability with the specification probability, we tighten all state constraints induced by the STL specification by solving tractable optimization problems over segments of the PRT, and relax the underlying stochastic problem with a deterministic one. This approach reduces conservatism compared to tightening guided by the STL structure. Additionally, we propose a recursively feasible algorithm to attack the resulting problem by decomposing it into agent-level subproblems, which are solved iteratively according to a scheduling policy. We demonstrate our method on a ten-agent system, where existing approaches are impractical. © 2024, CC BY.
