Despite using Community Detection Algorithms (CDA) in various network partitioning real-world applications, these algorithms tend to fail to partition complex weighted functional networks such as power grids. When contingency events occur, appropriate power grid partitioning enables an effective distributed control strategy to detect system faults and cyberattacks and accelerate electrical assets recovery through fast remedial control. This paper addresses the CDA by considering the functional structure of the power grid. When comparing the topological and functional structures of the power grid network, electrical Coupling Strength (ECS) reflects both direct and indirect power flows, unlike a conventional adjacency matrix, which only considers an unweighted direct connection between buses. The proposed Improved Louvain Algorithm (ILA) employs the ECS patterns to represent the network connection. Here, the quality function is modified as electrical modularity Qe to assess the goodness of the produced clusters. Large Qe indicates that the power transmission within the partition is dense compared to power transmission with other partitions. The algorithm has been tested on IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus systems. Using different case scenarios, the simulation results demonstrate the high effectiveness of the proposed ILA to the traditional Louvain algorithm in partitioning the complex networked electrical grid into adequate subsystems. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we enhance a distributed version of the well known k-means algorithm with privacy-preservation features. While ensuring that sensitive or confidential information remains undisclosed to unauthorized entities (in our case these entities are curious nodes within the network), we maintain the desirable features of the distributed algorithm: the transmitted values are quantized, which optimizes bandwidth utilization and alleviates communication bottlenecks, and nodes possess the ability to collectively determine when to terminate the algorithm, which enables the conservation of valuable resources. We introduce a novel privacy-preserving protocol that not only preserves the privacy of a node's state, but it also ensures confidentiality about its cluster affiliation (i.e., it does not reveal to curious nodes whether a node participates in the update calculation for a specific centroid value). Moreover, we precisely characterize topological conditions that guarantee privacy preservation for individual nodes. Our distributed algorithm allows the formation of exclusive clusters within a finite time frame on any static and strongly connected directed graph. © 2023 IEEE.

Terahertz Band UAV Base Stations for Post-Disaster Communication

In case of emergency, data rate demand significantly increases, whereas the current disaster relief bands are not sufficient to supply this demand. Also, existing terrestrial base station infrastructure may be out of use. On the other hand, terahertz (THz) communication attracts attention due to the available massive bandwidth, promising a very high data rate. Moreover, employing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base station (BS) is a suitable solution for reliable communication links during search and rescue operations. Hence, in this work, we propose and analyze THz band UAV BS for disasters;consequently, a wideband channel in an unstandardized THz band can be utilized for disaster relief, providing sufficient capacity for high data rate demanding applications. In this study, the capacity performance and the outage probability of THz band UAV BS are evaluated for ground-to-UAV communication links compared to existing disaster relief bands considering beam misalignment fading, turbulence fading, and rain and fog effects, yielding encouraging results. In case a disaster affects a huge area, causing terrestrial base stations to be out-of-use, two alternative scenarios are studied. As a first scenario, the UAV-to-satellite communication link is considered for the THz band, sub-6 GHz disaster relief band, and free space optics, resulting in dramatic capacity reduction because of the high loss in the UAV-to-satellite link. As a second scenario, multi-hop UAV communication is considered by deploying multiple UAVs to connect the nearest available terrestrial BS. Simulation results reveal that the THz band UAV BS stands out as a promising candidate for post-disaster communication since it can provide tens of Gbps ergodic capacity for the ground-to-UAV link, and up to 5 Gbps ergodic capacity is obtained in the multi-hop communication scenario in case of outage in large areas. © 2020 IEEE.

Single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) fabricated in PureB silicon technology offer exceptional versatility, functioning both as light emitting diodes and detectors sensitive down to a single photon. In PureB technology, nanometer-thin layers of boron are deposited on the silicon surface, creating defect-free ultra-shallow junctions. In this paper, PureB diodes with a junction depth of a few tens of nanometers are studied as avalanche-mode light-emitting diodes (AMLEDs) with the advantage that optical absorption was minimal. They were systematically analyzed to investigate the impact of defects on their optical and electrical characteristics. Bulk defects were unintentionally introduced by contamination during the processing of the n+ buried layer. These defects cause the increase in dark currents and the formation of light-emitting spots, observable in light emission spectra taken at reverse biases below the breakdown voltage. An increase in relative intensity for wavelengths from 450 nm to 550 nm was observed in spectral characteristics of light emitting spots compared to the light emission of the active-region breakdown. Optical and electrical characterization was conducted on diodes with different geometry, implantation doses in the multiplication region, and distance to an implicit guard ring to examine the impact of these parameters on the light emission spectrum. Low-temperature electrical characteristics and light emission patterns of the devices were obtained by measurements at cryogenic temperatures. © 2025 SPIE.

Disentangled learning representations have promising utility in many applications, but they currently suffer from serious reliability issues. We present Gaussian Channel Autoencoder (GCAE), a method which achieves reliable disentanglement via flexible density estimation of the latent space. GCAE avoids the curse of dimensionality of density estimation by disentangling subsets of its latent space with the Dual Total Correlation (DTC) metric, thereby representing its high-dimensional latent joint distribution as a collection of many low-dimensional conditional distributions. In our experiments, GCAE achieves highly competitive and reliable disentanglement scores compared with state-of-the-art baselines. © 2023 11th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2023. We consider the problem of predicting link formation in Social Learning Networks (SLN), a type of social network that forms when people learn from one another through structured interactions. While link prediction has been studied for general types of social networks, the evolution of SLNs over their lifetimes coupled with their dependence on which topics are being discussed presents new challenges for this type of network. To address these challenges, we develop a series of autonomous link prediction methodologies that utilize spatial and time-evolving network architectures to pass network state between space and time periods, and that models over three types of SLN features updated in each period: neighborhood-based (e.g., resource allocation), path-based (e.g., shortest path), and post-based (e.g., topic similarity). Through evaluation on six real-world datasets from Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) discussion forums and from Purdue University, we find that our method obtains substantial improvements over Bayesian models, linear classifiers, and graph neural networks, with AUCs typically above 0.91 and reaching 0.99 depending on the dataset. Our feature importance analysis shows that while neighborhood and path-based features contribute the most to the results, post-based features add additional information that may not always be relevant for link prediction. The aim of the next-generation 5G wireless network is to provide high data rates, low latency, increased network capacity, and improved quality of surface (QoS) for wireless communication and internet of things (IoT). The millimetric wave communication is a promising technique with the capability of providing multi-gigabit transmission rate, network exibility, and cost-effectiveness for 5G backhauling. Smart antennas are a critical requirement for the success of millimetric wave communication system, and these antennas have the capability to form a high gain beam in desired direction and a null towards interfering signal. Directional beam-forming mitigates the high path loss associated with millimetric communication & improve signal to interference noise ratio.
