A novel approach to ultrasonic communication systems introduces a software-defined system that utilizes Periodic-permanent-magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducers (PPM-EMATs) as transmitters and receivers. Traditional systems had limitations in adaptability and flexibility. The software-defined system provides enhanced versatility, adaptability, and portability, allowing customization for diverse applications. The use of PPM-EMATs is explored for optimizing energy transfer through metal plate channels, generating shear horizontal waves. Experimental tests validate the efficiency of PPM-EMATs, showing successful communication at a 10-kbps bitrate using ASK modulation with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The research highlights the potential of PPM-EMAT technology in high-speed software-defined ultrasonic communication systems. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents an innovative, yet secure, eHealth framework that leverages Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) and blockchain technology to enhance transparency and security in the IoT-edge-cloud continuum. The framework incorporates SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to provide real-time, model-agnostic explanations for AI predictions, enabling personalized health monitoring and informed decisionmaking in healthcare. To strengthen data security, a consortium blockchain is employed, and AI is utilized to identify block data sensitivity at the edge within blockchain-integrated IoT architectures using Random Forest (RF) algorithm. This approach achieves high accuracy in validating block sensitivity, enabling efficient selection of authentication mechanisms in the proof of authentication (PoAh) consensus within the consortium blockchain. This ensures heightened protection for sensitive data and contributes to improved overall blockchain performance. The proposed framework is evaluated in an edge computing environment and demonstrates significant potential for advancing security and authentication in eHealth, representing a substantial advancement in healthcare technology. © 2024 IEEE.

We present a novel approach for planning locations to surface an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) to reset inertial navigation errors by obtaining a GPS fix. Vehicles typically surface at fixed-distance intervals determined by their inertial navigation system performance to maintain acceptable error bounds on navigation. This method, which can result in surfacing in regions with an elevated risk of collision with surface vessels, restricts the means for autonomy to balance the trade-off between surfacing immediately or deferring. The problem of scheduling surfacing locations is further complicated due to the uncertainty between a planned and actual surfacing location, which increases with time submerged. Our approach assumes a spatial point process model for historical maritime traffic that we use to quantify surfacing risk throughout the operational area. Our main contribution is that we model and penalize accumulated navigation uncertainty for each candidate surfacing point of a feasible path. This allows autonomy to balance the trade-off between surfacing risk, navigation performance, and pathlength. The effectiveness of our planner is shown in a numerical illustration. The results show that our planner minimizes path length and number of surfacings while satisfying a constraint on maximum allowable risk. © 2023 The Marine Technology Society (MTS).

A broadband circularly polarized (CP) S-band antenna array for CubeSat technology was proposed. The proposed CP antenna array comprised of 2 × 2 rectangular-shaped ring patches and sequentially rotated feeding structure. Besides, the sequentially rotated feeding structure is utilized to match impedance. This antenna is made of single-layered Roger RT5880 substrate. The simulation results at 2 GHz achieved IBW of 81% (1.3 - 2.92 GHz) and ARBW of 25% (1.85 - 2.35 GHz). The optimal RHCP gain is 4.69 dBic at 2.25 GHz. The half-power beamwidth at 2 GHz is 71.51°. The radiation patterns are RHCP characteristic. The proposed CP S-band antenna array with sequentially rotated feeding structure is deployed with the CubeSat platform, resulting in the proposed CP antenna array befitting CubeSat technology. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes an observer-based formation tracking control approach for multi-vehicle systems with second-order motion dynamics, assuming that vehicles' relative or global position and velocity measurements are unavailable. It is assumed that all vehicles are equipped with sensors capable of sensing the bearings relative to neighboring vehicles and only one leader vehicle has access to its global position. Each vehicle estimates its absolute position and velocity using relative bearing measurements and the estimates of neighboring vehicles received over a communication network. A distributed observer-based controller is designed, relying only on bearing and acceleration measurements. This work further explores the concept of the Bearing Persistently Exciting (BPE) formation by proposing new algorithms for bearing-based localization and state estimation of second-order systems in centralized and decentralized manners. It also examines conditions on the desired formation to guarantee the exponential stability of distributed observer-based formation tracking controllers. In support of our theoretical results, some simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed observers as well as the observer-based tracking controllers. © 2024 IEEE.

The use of NAND Flash-based SSD is on the rise in various domains such as Enterprise, Data centers, Personal computers, and Automotive. However, the address translation in the FTL has been a major performance bottleneck in the SSD systems due to frequent accesses to the L2P (Logical to Physical) mapping table. In this paper, we analyze the access patterns of logical and physical pages across popular storage workloads to find any correlations between them. The results from this paper will help system architects and researchers to design efficient address translation mechanisms for large-capacity SSDs. © 2023 IEEE.

For providing a safe and secure healthcare environment in vehicular multimedia networks has been emerged as a promising area because of data exchange in multimedia format. Because of properties of Long Term Evolution (LTE) with low delay, high data rate, high mobility, an efficient safe environment can be provided to the in healthcare environment for multimedia content (images, audio, text, video). Despite these benefits, due to the high mobility and data transmission using an open channel, i.e., Internet, multimedia vehicular networks are facing many security breaches in recent years. The Internet of Multimedia Vehicular Environment calls for the establishment of a safe and intelligent healthcare system, and the proposed work problem lays the groundwork for those requirements. One of the security breaches is the Denial of Service (DoS) attack in healthcare. To mitigate this issue, in this paper, we propose, SHIS, a model for detection of Imposter location using two parameters (i) packet counter and (ii) average ratio of packet delivery. It helps to detect attacks faster in comparison to the existing approach (MEC-DoS) for healthcare data. We proposed SHIS to detect denial of service attack to find the location of malicious nodes in the multimedia network. Simulation results showed that SHIS outperformed the existing techniques as it has 20% improvement in detection of attacks as compared to the existing techniques. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This work addresses maximally robust control synthesis under unknown disturbances. We consider a nonlinear system, subject to a Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specification and jointly synthesize the maximal possible disturbance bounds and the corresponding controllers that ensure the STL specification is satisfied under these bounds. Many works have considered STL satisfaction under given bounded disturbances yet, to the authors' best knowledge, this is the first work that aims to maximize the permissible disturbance set and find corresponding maximally robust controllers. We, therefore, introduce disturbance robustness as a model-based robustness metric for STL planning and control synthesis. We extend the notion of disturbance-robust semantics for STL, which is a property of a specification, dynamical system, and controller, and provide an algorithm for maximally robust controllers satisfying an STL specification using Hamilton-Jacobi reachability. We show its soundness and provide a simulation example with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). © 2024 IEEE.

Physical interactions in Human-computer Interaction (HCI) provide immersive ways for people to engage with technology. However, designers face challenges in integrating physical computing and modeling when designing physical interactions. We explore triboelectric material sensing, a promising technology that addresses these challenges, though its use within the design community remains underexplored. To bridge this gap, we develop a toolkit consisting of triboelectric material pairs, a mechanism taxonomy, a signal processing tool, and computer program templates. We introduce this toolkit to designers in two workshops, where reflections on the design process highlight its effectiveness and inspire innovative interaction designs. Our work contributes valuable resources and knowledge to the design community, making triboelectric sensing more accessible and fostering creativity in physical interaction design. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Hyperspectral neutron computed tomography (HSnCT) is an effective technique for characterizing poly crystalline material samples. A typical scan involves making multiple HS projection measurements by rotating the sample about a single axis and using a standard algorithm for tomographic reconstruction. Recently, an autonomous polycrystalline material decomposition (APMD) algorithm was proposed to obtain accurate 3D reconstruction of the different materials or crystallographic phases in the object. However, for objects with complex compositions and shapes, using data from a single rotation axis may result in reconstructions with significant noise and inaccuracies in the material decomposition. In this paper, we present a multi-pose reconstruction algorithm to produce a single reconstruction from HSnCT data corresponding to multiple poses of the object. Our algorithm extends previous APMD work to incorporate hyperspectral neutron measurements from multiple poses, utilizing the Multi-Agent Consensus Equilibrium (MACE) framework to integrate projections from different rotation axes into a single reconstruction. We apply our method to simulated data and demonstrate that multi-pose APMD achieves significantly improved material decomposition accuracy compared to single-pose APMD. © 2024 IEEE.
