There has been a strong interest in statistically characterizing the cavity quality factor (Q-factor) for large, complex enclosures. While there are existing methods for analyzing the Q-factor statistics due to distributed losses, there is currently little discussion about the statistical cavity Q-factor caused by localized losses, such as aperture leakage and absorptive loading. This paper presents a physics-oriented, hybrid deterministic-stochastic model that calculates the probability distribution of cavity Q-factor. The research work is evaluated and validated through representative experiments. © 2023 IEEE.

Recently, there has been significant attention to WiFi-based human pose estimation (HPE) within the research community due to its device-free nature, cost-effectiveness, and privacy preservation. The implementation of such a solution requires improved model performance while upholding efficiency, particularly when employing resource-constrained devices. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach, the so-called WiLHPE, which integrates multi-modal sensors such as cameras and WiFi to accurately detect human pose landmarks. WiLHPE involves processing the raw WiFi signal through a novel neural network architecture to dynamically learn convolutional kernels weighted with attention across channel and frequency kernel spaces. This innovative approach diversifies the kernels to enhance the recognition capabilities of WiFi signals without introducing additional complexity, thus guaranteeing efficiency. Results conducted on the MM-Fi dataset underscore the superiority of WiLHPE over state-of-the-art approaches, all while ensuring minimal computational overhead. This makes the proposed approach highly suitable for large-scale scenarios.

Terahertz vortices are terahertz waves with helical wavefronts, and multiplexing terahertz vortices with different topological charges can increase the capacity of next-generation wireless communication devices. Next-generation wireless communications technology would need the integration of terahertz vortex elements with different topological charges into compact terahertz continuous-wave (CW) sources. However, it has yet to be demonstrated that terahertz vortex elements convert approximately spherical terahertz waves radiated from compact terahertz CW sources to terahertz vortices with different topological charges. Here, we demonstrate a planar terahertz vortex element with a laminated structure of our original metasurface composed of meta-atoms with high refractive indices and low reflectance. The planar terahertz vortex element suitable for integrating with our previously reported collimating metalens antennas convert plane waves to terahertz vortices with a doughnut-like electric field intensity distribution and a phase delay in a clockwise direction from the viewpoint of a receiver. Planar optical elements for integration into terahertz CW sources would be a welcome contribution to accelerate the development of next-generation high-capacity wireless communications, such as 6G (beyond 5G).

This work discusses the implications of selecting particular statistical metrics and thresholds as criteria to diagnose awareness through Brain-computer Interface (BCI) technology in patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DOC). We report a first analysis of a novel dataset collected to investigate whether a motor attempt electroencephalography (EEG) paradigm coupled with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) can detect command following and, therefore, signs of conscious awareness in DOC. We assessed 22 DOC patients admitted to the acute rehabilitation unit after a brain lesion over one or more sessions. We extracted EEG sensorimotor rhythms and performed a standard open-loop BCI pipeline evaluation, classifying motor attempt against resting-state trials. We validate this approach by correlating classification accuracy with the established clinical scale Coma Recovery Scale Revised. We employ a machine learning (ML)-inspired diagnostic criterion based on confidence intervals over chance-level classification accuracy and show that it yields more conservative and, arguably, reliable inference of Cognitive Motor Dissociation (CMD) by means of command-following, neuroimaging-based tools, compared to diagnoses based on clinical assessments or criteria examining the statistical significance of brain features across different mental states. © 2023 IEEE.

High-rate structural health monitoring of active structures operating in high-rate dynamic environments empowers the execution of preventative behavior in response to structural degradation or external stimuli. Examples of structures operating in high-rate dynamic environments include hypersonic vehicles, space crafts, and ballistic packages. The effective selection of reactive actions to be taken in real time requires an up-to-date model of the structure’s state. Importantly, the short timescale of relevance to these structures means that the model must be continuously updated with a time step of 1 millisecond or less. However, traditional frequency-based methods for updating the finite element model online require solving the generalized eigenvalue problem, which becomes more complex as the number of nodes or FEA model increases, thereby increasing computational time. In this work, the local eigenvalue modification procedure is put forward to accelerate the extraction of natural frequencies from finite element models updated online. The local eigenvalue modification procedure works by precomputing the eigenvalue solution to a reference state of the system and then computes the single (i.e., local) change in the modal domain from the reference state to the current state online. The modal domain update in the local eigenvalue modification procedure bypasses the general eigenvalue problem, which is the most expensive computational step. For the online implementation of the state estimation, the Dynamic Reproduction of Projectiles in Ballistic Environments for Advanced Research testbed is used. The testbed allows for the controlled movement of a pinned condition attached to an otherwise free cantilever beam. In previous studies, the testbed has been used with the generalized eigenvalue solver in a frequency-based model assimilation approach to infer the most likely position of the pinned condition (i.e., state of the structure). With the advent of rigorous membrane research and development in the middle of the 20th century, more wastewater plants started incorporating Membrane BioReactors (MBR) in their design. However, being a membrane system, the MBR is subject to fouling which may lead to maintenance and cleaning costs. In this paper, a fouling monitoring and prediction tool has been designed in MATLAB\Simulink. The model takes states related to membrane fouling, and calculates the membrane total resistance based on deterministic and stochastic models. The tool is capable of predicting future transmembrane pressure (TMP) cycles based on older TMP performance via an artificial neural network algorithm. TMP data have been synthetically generated from a validated mathematical model. Finally, an artificial neural network controller is implemented to control temperature and Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) around their desired setpoints. The controller is able to minimize disturbances in both states in a narrow band around their desired setpoints.

Plastic optical fibers, POF, play a significant role in telecommunications. Their advantages make them a popular choice against their glass fiber counterparts and copper cables. With their resistant material and efficiency in data transmission, not to mention cost-effectiveness due to easier installation compared to that of glass fiber, applications of POF are surging. Despite being a popular choice, POF does have its limitations, mainly scarce power budget that can be impaired when transmitting under bending conditions. Investigation regarding POF behavior under bending conditions is needed to gain better understanding of the limits to their transmission properties. In this paper, additional information is provided regarding 3 fiber types: step-index, graded-index, and multicore step-index fibers, and their behaviors under bending conditions. The transmission properties measured are bit error rate, also known as BER, and optical power. This paper investigates the effects, as well as the relationship, between optical power and BER under these conditions.

One of the most critical processes in the petroleum industry is transporting crude oil and its derivatives. Usually, it is done, due to easiness and economic aspects, through pipelines;several products, such as gasoline, kerosene, naphtha, and liquefied petroleum gas, among others, are moved in batch processes to both distribution and storage centers or transport ships. Since these transport systems transport different products, many works have focused on developing optimization strategies for scheduling these pipelines. That is, strategies that seek to optimize the use of the pipeline by establishing at what time points certain products must be transported. These strategies would be located at the planning level in the automation pyramid. In this work, on the other hand, different control strategies are proposed for a pipeline, but at the operation level. These strategies would be located at the control level, below the planning strategies in the automation pyramid. A pipeline of three pipe sections is modeled to develop the proposed control strategies, and the mathematical model is validated with actual data. The results show that, first, the proposed model approximates the actual behavior of the pipeline quite well and, second, that the combination of PID and feedforward control is an excellent alternative to implement control strategies for the operation of liquid transportation systems through pipelines. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2025.
