Tomographic reconstruction, despite its revolutionary impact on a wide range of applications, suffers from its ill-posed nature in that there is no unique solution because of limited and noisy measurements. Therefore, in the absence of ground truth, quantifying the solution quality is highly desirable but under-explored. In this work, we address this challenge through Gaussian process modeling to flexibly and explicitly incorporate prior knowledge of sample features and experimental noises through the choices of the kernels and noise models. Our proposed method yields not only comparable reconstruction to existing practical reconstruction methods (e.g., regularized iterative solver for inverse problem) but also an efficient way of quantifying solution uncertainties. We demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach on various images and show its unique capability of uncertainty quantification in the presence of various noises.

This research paper reports a very thin 2-port multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with a small footprint of 14× 10× 0.58mm3. The proposed design works between the frequencies of 8.73 to 15.86 GHz. A modified hexagonal patch is used along with the defected ground plane to obtain wide bandwidth. A conventional decoupling strip technique is utilized to improve the isolation between the ports and it is found >19dB across the whole operating band. In addition to that, 'H'-shaped slot has been incorporated into the grounding plane to enhance impedance matching. The realized gain and radiation patterns of the designed antenna are calculated and found quite acceptable. Furthermore, the diversity parameters of the antenna are computed with envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) 9.97dB across the entire operating frequency range. Finally, the results of MIMO antenna are compared with the calculated data for the purpose of practical validation. © 2023 IEEE.

Plastic optical fibers, POF, play a significant role in telecommunications. Their advantages make them a popular choice against their glass fiber counterparts and copper cables. With their resistant material and efficiency in data transmission, not to mention cost-effectiveness due to easier installation compared to that of glass fiber, applications of POF are surging. Despite being a popular choice, POF does have its limitations, mainly scarce power budget that can be impaired when transmitting under bending conditions. Investigation regarding POF behavior under bending conditions is needed to gain better understanding of the limits to their transmission properties. In this paper, additional information is provided regarding 3 fiber types: step-index, graded-index, and multicore step-index fibers, and their behaviors under bending conditions. The transmission properties measured are bit error rate, also known as BER, and optical power. This paper investigates the effects, as well as the relationship, between optical power and BER under these conditions. © 2025 IEEE.

This study proposes and investigates an image transmission system that utilizes Orthogonal Frequency-division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Software-Defined Radio (SDR) to transmit images over Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) in Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. The initial system focused on transmitting and receiving grayscale images due to the resource limitations of an IoT-like OFDM signals and the SDR system. To broaden the applicability of this system, the deep learning library, DeOldify, was used to recolor the received images. Different hardware and software parameters were tested, focusing on various frequencies and laser biases to observe how they affected and to determine which conditions performed best. Finally, results show the feasibility of the proposed system according to usual metrics as Bit Error Rate (BER) and decoded colored image examples are presented. © 2025 IEEE.

The rapid growth of urban areas, population, and pollution presents a significant environmental challenge. Addressing these challenges requires innovative analytical approaches and data sources. This study focuses on the three-scale phenomena of the environmental system, physical environment, and regional surroundings, considering their implications on a global network scale. Remote sensing data, with its easy accessibility, offers new toolkits and methods to improve the global environment. It provides self-consistent measurements of vital physical attributes and surpasses traditional data sources regarding accuracy, efficiency, and coverage of larger geographical areas. This study aims to identify and analyze appropriate satellite image analysis tools for healthcare. The study objectives include studying available tools, analyzing their features, categorizing tools into open-source and commercial categories, and providing recommendations. This study emphasizes feature extraction and image enhancement parameters, which are crucial for image analysis. Using WiFi Fingerprinting for indoor positioning is becoming increasingly popular due to its cost-effectiveness. However, to ensure the system can operate with high accuracy and stability, this technique requires a burden of data collection tasks from a dense distribution of reference points (RPs). To decrease the cost of data collection, as well as to improve the WiFi fingerprint database with irregular distribution of RPs, this study applies and compares different interpolation methods. Evaluating these methods in a public dataset including multiple sub-datasets with irregular distributions of RPs, the results highlight the Linear Barycentric interpolation (LB) as the most favorable method due to its low complexity and stable performance. The LB-based fingerprint database achieves an average interpolation error of less than 3 dBm compared to the original one. When applying the interpolated database to positioning tasks, it can help reduce acquisition costs by up to 50% while improving positioning accuracy by up to 11%. The study reveals the feasibility of interpolation in optimizing WiFi fingerprint data collection, especially in large and complex environments where regular distribution of RPs cannot be deployed. © 2024 IEEE.

Speak the Same Language: Global LiDAR Registration on BIM Using Pose Hough Transform

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds and building information modeling (BIM) represent two distinct data modalities in the fields of robot perception and construction. These modalities originate from different sources and are associated with unique reference frames. The primary goal of this study is to align these modalities within a shared reference frame using a global registration approach, effectively enabling them to "speak the same language". To achieve this, we propose a cross-modality registration method, spanning from the front end to the back end. At the front end, we extract triangle descriptors by identifying walls and intersected corners, enabling the matching of corner triplets with a complexity independent of the BIM's size. For the back-end transformation estimation, we utilize the Hough transform to map the matched triplets to the transformation space and introduce a hierarchical voting mechanism to hypothesize multiple pose candidates. The final transformation is then verified using our designed occupancy-aware scoring method. To assess the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted real-world multi-session experiments in a large-scale university building, employing two different types of LiDAR sensors. We make the collected datasets and codes publicly available to benefit the community. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Optical coherence tomography is a non-destructive optical signal acquisition and processing method for imaging surface tissue structure. OCT has become an important and innovative corneal measurement and diagnostic technology. Propose a multi-layer detection method for ophthalmic OCT retinal images. Firstly, perform 2D Gabor filtering on the OCT image, then binarize the filtered image, and finally perform eight neighborhood contour localization. To provide reference for the quantitative analysis of the thickness of different physiological layers in the anterior segment in the clinical diagnosis and lesion assessment of ophthalmic diseases. © 2023 ACM.

SLABIM: A SLAM-BIM Coupled Dataset in HKUST Main Building

Existing indoor SLAM datasets primarily focus on robot sensing, often lacking building architectures. To address this gap, we design and construct the first dataset to couple the SLAM and BIM, named SLABIM. This dataset provides BIM and SLAM-oriented sensor data, both modeling a university building at HKUST. The as-designed BIM is decomposed and converted for ease of use. We employ a multi-sensor suite for multi-session data collection and mapping to obtain the as-built model. All the related data are timestamped and organized, enabling users to deploy and test effectively. Furthermore, we deploy advanced methods and report the experimental results on three tasks: registration, localization and semantic mapping, demonstrating the effectiveness and practicality of SLABIM. This work focused on plasma-induced nitrogen-doped indium gallium zinc oxide (InGaZnO:N) based resistive switching devices. Nitrogen atoms in the InGaZnO:N can reduce the randomness of oxygen vacancy formation and conducting filaments, resulting in stable and uniform resistive switching (RS) and artificial synaptic performance. Optimized nitrogen and oxygen ion concentration improves the redox reaction depending on their reactivity with InGaZnO due to optimal VO concentration in the switching layer confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis. Device-to-device promising RS variability with ION/IOFF ratio >10 confirmed with multiple devices with low average SET/RESET voltages of 1.35 /[sbnd]1.5 V. Pulse-induced short-term memory learning characteristics with linear weight-update, including synaptic function of short-term potentiation (STP), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), spike rate-dependent plasticity (SRDP), and experience dependent synaptic weight modification are successfully emulated and demonstrated. The optimization of InGaZnO:N-based memristors provides efficient temporal information processing capability, serving as the physical reservoir computing system, demonstrated through experimental pattern recognition. The potentiaiton/depression of conductance was used for on-chip learning with the street view house numbers (SVHN) dataset. This study suggests that moderate nitrogen-doped ITO/InGaZnO:N/ITO memristors possess potential as synaptic devices for neuromorphic systems. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
