In order to bolster future wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks, especially aerial platforms including high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). These platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In this regard, this paper proposes a multi-layer network architecture consisting of HAPS and UAV, where the former acts as a HAPS super macro base station (HAPS-SMBS), while the latter serves as a relay node for the ground Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The UAV is equipped with active transmissive RIS, which is a novel technology with promising benefits. We also utilize multiple-input single-output (MISO) technology, i.e., multiple antennas at the HAPS-SMBS and a single antenna at the IoT devices. Additionally, we consider NOMA as the multiple access technology as well as the existence of hardware impairments as a practical limitation. We compare the proposed system model with various scenarios, all involving the HAPS-SMBS and RIS-equipped UAV relay combination, but with different types of RIS, antenna configurations, and access technologies. Sum rate and energy efficiency are used as performance metrics, and the findings demonstrate that, in comparison to all benchmarks, the proposed system yields significant performance gains. Moreover, hardware impairment limits the system performance at high transmit power levels.

It has been a long-standing question whether cosmic rays promote the triggering of lightning and how cosmic-ray air showers interact with the electric field of thunderclouds. The strong electric field in the thunderclouds accelerates electrons to the relativistic regime, of which seed electrons are thought to be supplied from cosmic-ray air shower. Such relativistic electrons emit bremsstrahlung photons in gamma rays, which have been detected by on-ground measurements called gamma-ray glows. Low-altitude winter thunderstorm in Japan provides an ideal environment for observations of gamma-ray glows. We newly launched the citizen science "Thundercloud Project" to construct a multi-point radiation mapping campaign for glows from winter thunderstorms around Kanazawa, Japan. We developed a new handy radiation monitor and shipped about 60 detectors to citizen supporters. The radiation data are stored in the microSD cards in the detectors, and a part of them is remotely sent to the web server so that researchers and supporters can watch the real-time data. In addition, an automatic alert is sent to public Twitter from the server when a glow is detected. The purpose of this project is (1) to characterize the methodological condition of electron acceleration, (2) to investigate whether accelerated relativistic electrons can enhance the chance of the initiation of lightning discharges, and (3) to find a new way of the citizen science to join in the cutting edge science in the physics field. Here we report this growing citizen science project and examples of successful gamma-ray glow observations. Our first scientific result from this citizen science project was published in Tsurumi et al., GRL 2023 [1], where we reported lightning discharges started in or near the electron acceleration site of a gamma-ray glow. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Instead of the mass production industry in the past, over these decades, precision and automatic manufacturing have become more and more widely accepted in the production area. With highly variable productivity and flexibility, Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) can decrease production costs and increase efficiency. Due to its resource sharing, unexpected system deadlock may occur in some situations. In research on system deadlock control, lots of existing literature use deadlock prevention as the primary control method, while it could block resources transporting and downscale the system reachability graph. This paper adopts a deadlock recovery policy as the direct control strategy based on control transition technology. This kind of control strategy and its benefit could be demonstrated through classical systems of simple sequential processes with resources (S3PR) nets and their Petri nets model. © 2023 IEEE.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) emerges as a promising technology for 6G, particularly in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band. However, the widely utilized hybrid architecture in mmWave systems compromises multiplexing gain due to the constraints of limited radio-frequency (RF) chains. Moreover, additional sensing functionalities exacerbate the impairment of spectrum efficiency (SE). In this paper, we present an optimized beam pattern modulation-embedded ISAC (BPM-ISAC) transceiver design, which spares one RF chain for sensing and uses the remaining ones for communication. To compensate for the reduced SE, index modulation across communication beams is applied. We formulate an optimization problem aimed at minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) of the sensing beampattern, subject to a symbol MSE constraint. This problem is then solved by sequentially optimizing the analog and digital parts. Both the multi-aperture structure (MAS) and the multi-beam structure (MBS) are considered in the analog part. We conduct theoretical analysis on the asymptotic pairwise error probability (APEP) and the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of direction of arrival (DoA) estimation. Numerical simulations validate the overall enhanced ISAC performance over existing alternatives. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Millimeter-wave networks have already been successfully rolled out in many countries and now the research direction heads toward new technologies and standards to enable Tbps rates for future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems. This work studies a point-to-point terahertz (THz) communication network exploiting the concept of a fluid antenna system (FAS) over correlated alpha-mu fading channels, nicely fitting the THz communication. Furthermore, the considered system is expanded to the selection-combining-FAS (SC-FAS) and maximum-gain-combining-FAS (MGC-FAS) diversity variates at the receiver side. The proposed FAS and its diversity configuration techniques are aimed to combat the high path loss, blockages, and molecular absorption effect related to the THz band. Our contribution includes comprehensive outage probability (OP) performance analysis for the THz band given the non-diversity and diversity FAS receivers. Moreover, the derived outage probability formulas are verified via Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical results have confirmed the superior performance of the MGC-FAS scheme in terms of OP. Finally, this work justifies that a higher number of antenna ports dramatically improves the system performance, even in the presence of correlation.

We demonstrate simultaneous cell railing and electroporation on 3D microelectrode tracks. Cells are docked to the electrodes under positive dielectrophoretic force while transfection dose is controlled by adjusting activation parameters of electroporation bursts. Highly efficient and uniform cell transfection are realized on the present microfluidic platform, which shows potential for high throughput continuous-flow cell transfection. © 2021 MicroTAS 2021 - 25th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences. With the high proportion of large-scale distributed wind and solar renewable energy penetration, China's energy supply structure and power grid architecture are undergoing profound changes. In order to deeply analyze and understand the operation characteristics of AC / DC hybrid microgrid system in the energy structure, this paper uses the literature method and case analysis method to discuss and analyze the system architecture design, operation control strategy and typical operation conditions of AC / DC hybrid microgrid, and obtains its basic operation rules, so as to lay the foundation for the accurate and rapid control of the following typical operation conditions. Middle ear effusion is a common symptom of otitis media, the reactive physical manifestation of otitis media (OM) in children's middle ear. However, diagnosing MEE for little children at home is troublesome due to their difficulty cooperating and the caregiver's lack of medical knowledge. To this end, we propose EarSonar, a novel acoustic-based MEE diagnostic system. The principle behind EarSonar is that the acoustic absorption effect exists in ear scenarios, and the volume of middle ear fluid can markedly affect the absorbed spectrum energy. By automatically eliminating the impact of potential interference factors and identifying the representative frequency range with the typical reaction of acoustic absorption, EarSonar captures fine-grained signal features on absorbed spectrum energy and models the intrinsic relationship between acoustic absorption and the volume of the filler fluid in the eardrum. On that basis, EarSonar extracts the features of the MEE signal segment and uses k-means clustering to classify middle ear effusion status. We conducted a test on 112 adolescents aged 4–6. We divided the degree of middle ear effusion into three grades. The final average detection accuracy rate exceeds 92%, which is 8 % higher than the previous method. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype of EarSonar by building upon earphones embedded with a microphone and speaker. Experimental results demonstrate a feasible and effective way to turn earphones into potential home-use MEE screening tools.
