Rural communities in Australia have limited access to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists, resulting in a lack of expertise to provide a diagnosis of complex and chronic ear diseases. This literature review examines previous attempts at creating a computer-aided tool to accurately diagnose ear disease and gaps in the literature. A systematic search was conducted to identify relevant papers and the latest best trends in technology. Four papers showed significant results in ear disease detection with deep learning models providing the best performance. Some studies using larger datasets consisting of endoscopic images obtained accuracies of over 90%. No adequate model was found that used otoscopic images with a sensitivity of over 90%. Endoscopic images provide better quality images, making it unclear how the models would perform on otoscopic images. Advanced techniques such as Transformers have not yet been tested in ear disease detection and could help improve model accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel method that permits emulating a peak current-mode control (PCMC) scheme in switching regulators using ripple-mode control (RMC). Differently from the traditional RMC, the switching current is regulated cycle-by-cycle, like in a traditional PCMC, thus maintaining constant switching frequency operations over a large portion of the operative conditions. Hence, the proposed method avoids the operative dependence on the switching frequency that may suffer the converters based on RMC, while maintaining the simplicity and good dynamic properties of RMC. The paper first provides a theoretical analysis of the new method, supported by a set of simulations that demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of the method. Finally, a bench analysis on a dedicated prototype has confirmed experimentally the good agreement with the theoretical prediction. © 2023 IEEE.

Disaster Impacts Surveillance from Social Media with Topic Modeling and Feature Extraction: Case of Hurricane Harvey

Twitter can supply useful information on infrastructure impacts to the emergency managers during major disasters,but it is time consuming to filter through many irrelevant *** studies have identified the types of messages that can be found on social media during disasters,but few solutions have been proposed to efficiently extract useful *** present a framework that can be applied in a timely manner to provide disaster impact information sourced from social *** framework is tested on a well-studied and data-rich case of Hurricane *** procedures consist of filtering the raw Twitter data based on keywords,location,and tweet attributes,and then applying the latent Dirichlet allocation(LDA) to separate the tweets from the disaster affected area into categories(topics) useful to emergency *** LDA revealed that out of 24 topics found in the data,nine were directly related to disaster impacts-for example,outages,closures,flooded roads,and damaged *** such as frequent hashtags,mentions,URLs,and useful images were then extracted and *** relevant tweets,along with useful images,were correlated at the county level with flood depth,distributed disaster aid(damage),and population *** correlations were found between the nine relevant topics and population density but not flood depth and damage,suggesting that more research into the suitability of social media data for disaster impacts modeling is *** results from this study provide baseline information for such efforts in the future.

A multi-trace surface integral equation (MT-SIE) solver is proposed to analyze electromagnetic field interactions on graphene-based devices. This solver decomposes the computation domain into an exterior subdomain (the background medium where the device resides in) and an interior subdomain that represents the device's dielectric substrate. The infinitesimally thin graphene sheet partially covers the interface between these two subdomains. On the graphene surface and the rest of this interface, resistive Robin transmission conditions (formulated for the first time in this work) and the traditional Robin transmission conditions are used to "connect"these two subdomains, respectively. In each subdomain, the electric and magnetic field equations are used as the governing equations. Various numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and the applicability of the proposed MT-SIE solver. © 2022 IEEE.

Increasing urban mobility requirements demand efficient transportation system strategies for both vehicular and pedestrian movement. This study enhances the Decentralized Graph-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (DGMARL) approach, originally tailored for vehicular traffic signal timing, to incorporate pedestrian traffic dynamics. The improved algorithm considers crucial metrics such as Eco_PI, assesses vehicle fuel consumption by factoring in stops and delays, and addresses pedestrian waiting time, crucial for system efficiency while acknowledging driver waiting time impact. Utilizing Digital Twin simulation along the MLK Smart Corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the algorithm's performance is compared for various pedestrian control scenarios. To evaluate the effectiveness of DGMARL, this study compared DGMARL-enabled signal management with automated pedestrian traffic detection and an actuated signal management system (real-word baseline) with pedestrian recall, which predetermingly enforces a pedestrian phase every cycle. Findings indicate substantial improvements with DGMARL, showing a 28.29% enhancement in vehicle Eco_PI, a 60.55 % reduction in pedestrian waiting time, and a 55.74% decrease in driver stop delay, on average, compared to the baseline actuated signal timing plan. © 2024 IEEE.

The system deadlock problem of the flexible manufacturing system (FMS) needs to be solved urgently. Deadlocks may occur when resources are repeatedly requested by multiple working processes, where such competition causes a lack of resources, and the system cannot get into subsequent processes smoothly. In this paper, we build FMS by using a particular class of Petri Net (PN) model called a system of simple sequential processes with resources (S3PR) net, which features a high utilization rate of resources. When parts of resources are held by related processes and these processes wait for others to release resources to move on, a circular waiting situation occurs. Circular waiting is one of the conditions for system deadlocks occurring, where the system under this situation has a high probability of causing system deadlocks. The resources being held have to be released to break the waiting states. This paper develops a novel control transition-based deadlock recovery policy by combining graph theory and reachability graph analysis technique. The proposed approach firstly builds a subnet of the PN model called resource flow graph (RFG) and finds out all its hold and request circuits (HRCs), which may lead to a circular waiting situation. In addition, we design a new algorithm to obtain the minimal set of control transitions further. We introduce three PN models of FMS to demonstrate the proposed method. Through experimental results and comparison between related works, it is known that the proposed deadlock recovery uses fewer controllers and has the same performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Diffraction-free propagation and self-healing characteristics [1] of Bessel beams have generated significant interest in the scientific community. Zeroth-order Bessel beams (ZOBBs) have maximum intensity at the center and found many applications, including bio-imaging material processing, optical trapping, bio-imaging, and quantum communication. On the other hand, higher-order (vortex) Bessel beams (HOBBs) present a helical wavefront, so they have a node due to a phase singularity and carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). Over the past years, Bessel beams have been generated by using different approaches - which could be different for ZOBBs and HOBBs - namely by Fourier transforming a narrow circular beam with a lens, by using axicons or with holographic beam shaping techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) is being applied to hydrogeological applications studies like survey of groundwater contamination. Monitoring of groundwater using this approach was more effective because it does not use wells for observation. Among the purposes of this research were to determine the leachate and sand characteristics, evaluate the resistivity for different types of permeating fluids and measure the resistivity correlation between water and leachate. Due to the infiltration of leachate, the bad impact at the landfill site has been declared will give contribution to groundwater contamination. Methods that have been implemented was soil box method. The purpose of this method is to measure the electrical resistivity of permeates liquid and sand sample. The moist fine sand was placed into an oven of 100 °C for 24 h to obtain the dried fine sand oven. Various materials have been tested such as leachate, tap water, and distilled water for 15, 30, and 45 ml with dried fine sand oven. Characteristics of leachates were determined from dissolved solid determination, turbidity measurement, colour measurement, and more. It can be summarized that the resistivity value of leachate is lower than that of tap water and distilled water. Also, from the comparison it can be concluded that leachate gives minimal impact for turbidity value as soil itself has a great effect on increasing the value of turbidity. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) emerges as a promising technology for 6G, particularly in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band. However, the widely utilized hybrid architecture in mmWave systems compromises multiplexing gain due to the constraints of limited radio-frequency (RF) chains. Moreover, additional sensing functionalities exacerbate the impairment of spectrum efficiency (SE). In this paper, we present an optimized beam pattern modulation-embedded ISAC (BPM-ISAC) transceiver design, which spares one RF chain for sensing and uses the remaining ones for communication. To compensate for the reduced SE, index modulation across communication beams is applied. We formulate an optimization problem aimed at minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) of the sensing beampattern, subject to a symbol MSE constraint. This problem is then solved by sequentially optimizing the analog and digital parts. Both the multi-aperture structure (MAS) and the multi-beam structure (MBS) are considered in the analog part. We conduct theoretical analysis on the asymptotic pairwise error probability (APEP) and the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of direction of arrival (DoA) estimation. Numerical simulations validate the overall enhanced ISAC performance over existing alternatives. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.

In the era of Big Data, effective data reduction through feature selection is of paramount importance for machine learning. This paper presents GLEm-Net (Grouped Lasso with Embeddings Network), a novel neural framework that seamlessly processes both categorical and numerical features to reduce the dimensionality of data while retaining as much information as possible. By integrating embedding layers, GLEm-Net effectively manages categorical features with high cardinality and compresses their information in a less dimensional space. By using a grouped Lasso penalty function in its architecture, GLEm-Net simultaneously processes categorical and numerical data, efficiently reducing high-dimensional data while preserving the essential information. We test GLEm-Net with a real-world application in an industrial environment where 6 million records exist and each is described by a mixture of 19 numerical and 7 categorical features with a strong class imbalance. A comparative analysis using state-of-the-art methods shows that despite the difficulty of building a high-performance model, GLEm-Net outperforms the other methods in both feature selection and classification, with a better balance in the selection of both numerical and categorical features. © 2023 IEEE.
