An Improved Deadlock Recovery Policy of Flexible Manufacturing Systems Based on Resource Flow Graphs

The system deadlock problem of the flexible manufacturing system (FMS) needs to be solved urgently. Deadlocks may occur when resources are repeatedly requested by multiple working processes, where such competition causes a lack of resources, and the system cannot get into subsequent processes smoothly. In this paper, we build FMS by using a particular class of Petri Net (PN) model called a system of simple sequential processes with resources (S3PR) net, which features a high utilization rate of resources. When parts of resources are held by related processes and these processes wait for others to release resources to move on, a circular waiting situation occurs. Circular waiting is one of the conditions for system deadlocks occurring, where the system under this situation has a high probability of causing system deadlocks. The resources being held have to be released to break the waiting states. This paper develops a novel control transition-based deadlock recovery policy by combining graph theory and reachability graph analysis technique. The proposed approach firstly builds a subnet of the PN model called resource flow graph (RFG) and finds out all its hold and request circuits (HRCs), which may lead to a circular waiting situation. In addition, we design a new algorithm to obtain the minimal set of control transitions further. We introduce three PN models of FMS to demonstrate the proposed method. Through experimental results and comparison between related works, it is known that the proposed deadlock recovery uses fewer controllers and has the same performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Congenital heart diseases (CHDs), caused by structural abnormalities in the heart and blood vessels, pose a significant public health concern and contribute significantly to the socioeconomic burden, particularly in pediatric populations. Phonocardiograms (PCGs), as a non-invasive and cost-effective diagnostic modality, capture vital acoustic signals that reflect the mechanical activity of the heart and can reveal pathological patterns associated with various CHD types. This study investigates the minimum signal duration required for accurate automatic classification of heart sounds and evaluates signal quality using the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and the zero-crossing rate (ZCR). Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) are extracted as features and fed into a transformer-based residual one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) for classification. Experimental results show that a threshold of 0.4 for RMSSD and ZCR yields optimal classification performance, with a minimum signal length of 5 seconds required for reliable results. Shorter segments (3 seconds) lack sufficient diagnostic information, while longer segments (15 seconds) may introduce additional noise. The proposed model achieves a maximum classification accuracy of 93.69% with 5-second signals. © 2013 IEEE.

In order to bolster future wireless networks, there has been a great deal of interest in non-terrestrial networks, especially aerial platforms including high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). These platforms can integrate advanced technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In this regard, this paper proposes a multi-layer network architecture consisting of HAPS and UAV, where the former acts as a HAPS super macro base station (HAPS-SMBS), while the latter serves as a relay node for the ground Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The UAV is equipped with active transmissive RIS, which is a novel technology with promising benefits. We also utilize multiple-input single-output (MISO) technology, i.e., multiple antennas at the HAPS-SMBS and a single antenna at the IoT devices. Additionally, we consider NOMA as the multiple access technology as well as the existence of hardware impairments as a practical limitation. We compare the proposed system model with various scenarios, all involving the HAPS-SMBS and RIS-equipped UAV relay combination, but with different types of RIS, antenna configurations, and access technologies. Sum rate and energy efficiency are used as performance metrics, and the findings demonstrate that, in comparison to all benchmarks, the proposed system yields significant performance gains. Moreover, hardware impairment limits the system performance at high transmit power levels. © 2025 IEEE.

Diffraction-free propagation and self-healing characteristics [1] of Bessel beams have generated significant interest in the scientific community. Zeroth-order Bessel beams (ZOBBs) have maximum intensity at the center and found many applications, including bio-imaging material processing, optical trapping, bio-imaging, and quantum communication. On the other hand, higher-order (vortex) Bessel beams (HOBBs) present a helical wavefront, so they have a node due to a phase singularity and carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). Over the past years, Bessel beams have been generated by using different approaches - which could be different for ZOBBs and HOBBs - namely by Fourier transforming a narrow circular beam with a lens, by using axicons or with holographic beam shaping techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) is being applied to hydrogeological applications studies like survey of groundwater contamination. Monitoring of groundwater using this approach was more effective because it does not use wells for observation. Among the purposes of this research were to determine the leachate and sand characteristics, evaluate the resistivity for different types of permeating fluids and measure the resistivity correlation between water and leachate. Due to the infiltration of leachate, the bad impact at the landfill site has been declared will give contribution to groundwater contamination. Methods that have been implemented was soil box method. The purpose of this method is to measure the electrical resistivity of permeates liquid and sand sample. The moist fine sand was placed into an oven of 100 °C for 24 h to obtain the dried fine sand oven. Various materials have been tested such as leachate, tap water, and distilled water for 15, 30, and 45 ml with dried fine sand oven. Characteristics of leachates were determined from dissolved solid determination, turbidity measurement, colour measurement, and more. It can be summarized that the resistivity value of leachate is lower than that of tap water and distilled water. Also, from the comparison it can be concluded that leachate gives minimal impact for turbidity value as soil itself has a great effect on increasing the value of turbidity. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

The coexistence of coherent perfect absorber and laser or amplifier (CPAL) point is a peculiar spectral singularity associated with the scattering matrices of non-Hermitian systems. While the potential of CPAL systems for sensing application has been highlighted recently, the extreme sensitivity of parity-time (PT)-symmetric CPAL devices to the input signal deviations has so far impeded their practical utilization. Here we explore a strategy for implementing CPAL circuits by exploiting another type of non-Hermitian symmetry, namely anti-PT (APT) symmetry. We demonstrate that the condition for building CPAL in our proposed APT-symmetric electronic circuits additionally requires parity symmetry, which simplifies the circuit design and implementation. Additionally, we show that this newly proposed structure is 1.85 times more robust compared to previous CPAL devices studied in the literature.

In the era of Big Data, effective data reduction through feature selection is of paramount importance for machine learning. This paper presents GLEm-Net (Grouped Lasso with Embeddings Network), a novel neural framework that seamlessly processes both categorical and numerical features to reduce the dimensionality of data while retaining as much information as possible. By integrating embedding layers, GLEm-Net effectively manages categorical features with high cardinality and compresses their information in a less dimensional space. By using a grouped Lasso penalty function in its architecture, GLEm-Net simultaneously processes categorical and numerical data, efficiently reducing high-dimensional data while preserving the essential information. We test GLEm-Net with a real-world application in an industrial environment where 6 million records exist and each is described by a mixture of 19 numerical and 7 categorical features with a strong class imbalance. A comparative analysis using state-of-the-art methods shows that despite the difficulty of building a high-performance model, GLEm-Net outperforms the other methods in both feature selection and classification, with a better balance in the selection of both numerical and categorical features. © 2023 IEEE.

In the context of digital transformation in the occupational health and safety sector, this research focuses on the efficacy of virtual reality training tools in ensuring workplace safety during maintenance activities. A comprehensive methodology, including focus groups and workshops, is utilized to define a study protocol and evaluate the proposed virtual reality solution. The study suggests that immersive virtual reality training, which integrates the Skill-Rule-Knowledge framework, has the potential to enhance workers’ ability to manage unforeseen situations. It emphasizes the importance of practical, scenario-based training and outlines a detailed evaluation process.
