Recent advancements in event argument extraction (EAE) involve incorporating useful auxiliary information into models during training and inference, such as retrieved instances and event templates. These methods face two challenges: (1) the retrieval results may be irrelevant and (2) templates are developed independently for each event without considering their possible relationship. In this work, we propose DEGAP to address these challenges through a simple yet effective components: dual prefixes, i.e. learnable prompt vectors, where the instance-oriented prefix and template-oriented prefix are trained to learn information from different event instances and templates. Additionally, we propose an event-guided adaptive gating mechanism, which can adaptively leverage possible connections between different events and thus capture relevant information from the prefix. Finally, these event-guided prefixes provide relevant information as cues to EAE model without retrieval. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance on four datasets (ACE05, RAMS, WIKIEVENTS, and MLEE). Despite using Community Detection Algorithms (CDA) in various network partitioning real-world applications, these algorithms tend to fail to partition complex weighted functional networks such as power grids. When contingency events occur, appropriate power grid partitioning enables an effective distributed control strategy to detect system faults and cyberattacks and accelerate electrical assets recovery through fast remedial control. This paper addresses the CDA by considering the functional structure of the power grid. When comparing the topological and functional structures of the power grid network, Electrical Coupling Strength (ECS) reflects both direct and indirect power flows, unlike a conventional adjacency matrix, which only considers an unweighted direct connection between buses. The proposed Improved Louvain Algorithm (ILA) employs the ECS patterns to represent the network connection. Here, the quality function is modified as electrical modularity Qe to assess the goodness of the produced clusters. Large Qe indicates that the power transmission within the partition is dense compared to power transmission with other partitions. The algorithm has been tested on IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus systems. Using different case scenarios, the simulation results demonstrate the high effectiveness of the proposed ILA to the traditional Louvain algorithm in partitioning the complex networked electrical grid into adequate subsystems. © 2023 IEEE.

Three types of halide-perovskite-based fast-acting fluorescent materials have been demonstrated for high-speed visible light communication. All-inorganic metal-halide perovskite CsPbI3 was utilized to generate red color at 685 nm, and two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite nanosheets, (PEA)2PbI4 and (PEA)2PbBr4 (PEA= C8H9NH3), with peak photoluminescence (PL) wavelengths of 525 nm and 408 nm, were respectively used for green- and blue-light emission. The materials were then embedded in the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to improve their durability and flexibility in practical applications. Pumped by a 405-nm violet laser, the red and green phosphors exhibit –3-dB modulation bandwidths of 14 MHz and 193 MHz, respectively. For the blue phosphor, a 124-MHz –3-dB bandwidth was obtained by using a 375-nm UVA laser diode. Benefitting from either the short PL lifetime or high PL quantum yield, aggregate Gb/s data transmission was achieved in the communication link. Direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) modulation scheme was implemented with an adaptive quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal. The transmission net data rates of RGB phosphors are 0.51 Gb/s, 0.93 Gb/s, and 0.43 Gb/s, respectively. The corresponding average bit error ratios are 3.5×10-3, 3.6×10-3, and 3.6×10-3, which are below the 7%-overhead forward error correction (FEC) criterion. Taking advantage of the tunability of the halide perovskite materials covering the whole visible range could further fulfill high-speed color-pure wavelength-division multiplexing by using a single source with multiple luminescent materials emitting light at different wavelengths. Besides, combining luminescent materials with specific colors, simultaneous white-light illumination, and high-speed communication can also be realized. © 2023 SPIE.

The essence of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) lies in the living knowledge and skills passed down through generations. Daily practice plays a vital role in revitalizing ICH by fostering continuous learning and improvement. However, limited resources and accessibility pose significant challenges to sustaining such practice. Virtual reality (VR) has shown promise in supporting extensive skill training. Unlike technical skill training, ICH daily practice prioritizes cultivating a deeper understanding of cultural meanings and values. This study explores VR's potential in facilitating ICH daily practice through a case study of Traditional Chinese Flower Arrangement (TCFA). By investigating TCFA learners' challenges and expectations, we designed and evaluated FloraJing, a VR system enriched with cultural elements to support sustained TCFA practice. Findings reveal that FloraJing promotes progressive reflection, and continuous enhances technical improvement and cultural understanding. We further propose design implications for VR applications aimed at fostering ICH daily practice in both knowledge and skills. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Food Solutions and Nutrition Checker is an innovative and comprehensive project aimed at providing users with a reliable tool to identify various foods and dishes, while also offering a custom-built database for detecting fresh and wasted food items. With this system, users can easily determine the nutritional value of different foods, making informed decisions about their dietary choices. This study incorporates advanced technology that enables the recognition of a wide range of food items. By simply capturing an image or specifying the dish, users can obtain accurate information about the food, including its ingredients and origin. This feature is particularly helpful for individuals with specific dietary needs or restrictions, allowing them to easily identify suitable menu options. Additionally, this study includes a custom-built data system that helps to identify fresh and wasted food. By analyzing factors such as expiration dates, storage conditions, and quality indicators, the proposed system can determine the freshness status of various food items. This capability promotes food waste reduction by enabling users to make informed decisions regarding the consumption or disposal of perishable goods. Moreover, this study incorporates a nutritional tracker that provides users with comprehensive information regarding the nutritional composition of different foods. This feature includes details such as calorie count, macronutrient breakdown, vitamins, and minerals, empowering users to make healthier food choices aligned with their dietary goals and requirements. Overall, the proposed model offers a holistic approach for food identification, waste reduction, and nutritional tracking. By incorporating advanced technology and a robust database, this study aims to facilitate informed decision-making and promote healthier dietary practices.

Guiding a user’s hand along a 3D path can help individuals avoid obstacles and manipulate everyday items with eyes-free. While prior work focused on haptic approaches using robots, auditory approaches for 3D path guidance remain underexplored. We prototyped and assessed two auditory hand guidance techniques for 3D path tracing: (1) VERBAL repeating spoken directional prompts;(2) Follow-Your-Finger (FYF) using the user’s index finger in moving hand as an embodied reference and sonifying whether the user should follow the index finger direction. In a controlled pilot study with 12 sighted participants under an eyes-free condition, VERBAL yielded about 1.5 times faster performance than FYF, while FYF achieved an error rate of less than half VERBAL’s. We thus recommend using VERBAL for wider paths with fewer obstacles and FYF for narrower paths with higher collision risks. We also discuss the research direction for applying these findings to real-world tasks. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Mobile edge computing (MEC) can deliver low-latency computing services by deploying edge servers that are close to mobile devices. This paper presents a task offloading and power assignment optimization algorithm for minimizing task completion time under an energy constraint upon the mobile device. We develop a grey wolf optimizer (GWO)-based metaheuristic algorithm to determine the offloading order and power assignment for task offloading. The proposed algorithm employs a position-based mapping scheme for converting each grey wolf into a high-quality offloading solution represented by a task sequence. For the ordered tasks in the converted solution, we develop a heuristic strategy to assign their transmission powers such that the fitness value of the corresponding grey wolf can be evaluated. We further introduce a selection mechanism for updating the wolf population, in which grey wolves with high fitness values have high probabilities of being selected in the next generation of grey wolves. Evaluation results demonstrate that the new mapping scheme and selection mechanism are beneficial for improving task offloading performance in terms of significant makespan reductions. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper presents a voltage control method for active distribution systems, which is based on the operation of on-load tap changers of the distribution transformers, in conjunction with a demand response program. Both on-load tap changers and demand response operations are initiated when pre-determined voltage criteria are fulfilled, making the approach completely decentralized. Several scenarios considering time-varying consumption of loads and variable electricity production from distributed generation units are simulated. The proposed voltage control method is tested against those scenarios, whereas also severe contingencies, such as the sudden loss of a distributed generation unit, are additionally considered. The simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently controls voltage within the permissible distribution levels, even under extreme system conditions. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings.
