This paper deals with the application of a optimization technique inspired by natural evolution, namely Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the design of Fractional order Proportional and Integral (FOPI) based DSTATCOM (Distributed Static Compensator) and ELC (Electronic Load controller). The GA technique helps search efficiently the optimal parameters of the FOPI controller. Conventional controllers use integral order control which is less robust as compared to fractional order control. This paper is based on a novel application of fractional order controller optimized by genetic algorithm for power quality improvement using DSTATCOM and ELC in a power system. With the help of modelling carried out in a MATLAB based environment and a set of simulation results, the superiority of the designed FOPI over PI (Proportional - Integral) based DSTATCOM and ELC controllers used in power distribution system is affirmed and a comparative study in terms of overshoots and undershoots is presented.

The rotor position is integrant information for vector control drive system of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). In this paper, the focus is on the rotor position of PMSM detecting by the resolver sensor. The outstanding features of this sensor are its robust structure and noise insensitivity. To extract speed from the output of resolver we need R/D demodulator circuit. A new Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Algorithm is proposed in this paper in substitution for R/D circuit and implemented in the vector control drive system of PMSM. The proposed scheme has been verified by simulation and experiment using MATLAB/Simulink.

Face detection is one of the challenging problems in image processing. A novel face detection system is presented in this paper and we propose a new approach using Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model and Hue Saturation and Value (HSV) color model. The algorithm uses fuzzy classifier in conjunction with HSV color model to quickly locate faces in the image. The fuzzy classifier basically examines small windows of an image to detect presence of faces in that window and the HSV color model detects the skin in the image. The algorithm is characterized by its simplicity and inexpensive computational requirements. The method shows that our system has comparable performance in terms of detection rates and false positive rates.

This paper deals speed control of a DC motor using fractional-order control. Fractional calculus provides novel and higher performance extensions for fractional order proportional integral and derivative (FOPID) controller. In this paper, the parameters of the FOPID controller are optimally learned by using Genetic Algorithm (GA), and the optimization performance target is chosen as the integral of the absolute error (IAE). Simulation results show that the FOPID controller performs better than the integer order PID controller.

The ECG signal is used for various medical diagnoses. For diagnosis purposes, the ECG signal must be free from the noise and undesired disturbances. In the present work the best algorithm for de-noising the ECG signal is identified using Discrete Wavelet Transform. Statistical analysis and comparison has been made to find the best wavelet function, their decomposition level and threshold selection method to be used for signal de-noising and thus improve the Signal to Noise Ratio.
