In this paper, the performance and design analysis of two different configurations of fractional order fuzzy logic controller (FLC) schemes are investigated for two-link planar robotic manipulator plant. The plant under consideration is carrying a payload which is varying with time. The scaling gains of FLC and the other parameters of controller are obtained using an efficient multi-objective optimization technique named as non-dominating sorted genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Two different performance/objective functions are chosen for minimization to witness trade-off between them and to obtain better closed loop response. Using the MATLAB/Simulink platform for simulation, the performance of the proposed controller techniques are compared with the fractional version of PID (FOPID) and traditional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller. For the robustness testing, the results for the disturbance rejections are presented for all the control schemes.

In this paper, to ind a lower order model equivalent to a given higher order system, a simple method based on T.C Hsia's approximation method is proposed. To examine the accuracy of the proposed method, it is compared with the Hutton and Friedland's approach which uses α and β parameters. To demonstrate the correctness and efficacy of the proposed method, a fourth order system is reduced to first and second order using both the methods. The various performance indices of the reduced systems, obtained from the graphs plotted in Matlab platform are compared and analysed.

Metaheuristic or nature inspired optimization have evolved over time towards development of a general purpose optimizer. In this paper, a novel nature inspired algorithm, based on hunting mechanism of antlions, Ant Lion Optimizer toolkit is developed in LabVIEWTM environment. This paper provides an orderly procedure for development of toolkit including random walk of ants, building of traps, catching of prey and finally rebuilding of traps. LabVIEWTM is a highly productive development environment used largely in measurement and control applications. The only standard optimizer toolkit available in LabVIEW™ is Differential Evolution (DE) and therefore a need was felt to have an efficient optimizer. The toolkit so evolved in this paper when tested on different benchmark functions has performed adequately well over the DE toolkit. The results so obtained clearly prove that the submitted toolkit is able to provide superior results in terms of improved exploration, local optima avoidance, exploitation, and convergence.

The mathematical models used to represent physical processes are generally large and complex. Since simpler models are commonly employed in control, design and analysis, it is required to reduce the order of complex systems. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the performance of four order reduction methods. The computation of the lower order transfer functions is based on balance truncation algorithm, Hankel operator, moment matching and optimization algorithm. To demonstrate the performance of the reduction methods, second and third order transfer functions are computed for a plant model of fractional order. The integer transfer function of the plant model is obtained by applying Oustaloup filter approximation technique. For comparison of the reduction methods with ideal response, the analysis has been done both in frequency-domain and time-domain using MATLAB.
