Today's embedded systems often do not operate individually anymore. Instead, they form so called cyber-physical systems, where the overall functionality is provided by the collaboration of systems. Consequently, the design of this collaboration is an important activity during development and strongly affects system quality. In previous work, we presented a catalog of reusable messagebased real-time coordination patterns to avoid manual creation of new and, thus, error-prone designs. In this paper, we present an implementation of this catalog by a library in the Modelica language and an appropriate development process. The library stores ready to reuse solutions for common coordination activities and, thus, increases efficiency and effectiveness for use. Furthermore, the use of Modelica enables early holistic simulation of cyber-physical systems including feedback controllers and message-based coordination. We illustrate the library with examples from an autonomous railway vehicle and present an early evaluation. Copyright © 2014 ICST.

Identification of building damage using armax model: A parametric study

The Structural Identification approach is used to identify and localize the existence of damage for a steel frame. The black box linear parametric model called Auto-Regressive Moving Average with eXternal input (ARMAX) was utilized for the construction of the Frequency Response Functions, based on simulation results. The Singular Value Decomposition method was adopted to identify how many significant eigenvalues exist and plot the Complex Mode Indicator Function for the complete frame. Three damage indices were adopted to evaluate the state of damage in the frame. The results indicated that the ARMAX is a robust scheme for structural damage detection.

Internet of things (IOT) has caused great concern since its inception and it is considered as the second wave of the information industry after computer, internet and mobile communication network. Because IOT contains variety kinds of device, it becomes a typical heterogeneous network and it is very difficult to design a communication layer which satisfies the requirements such as dynamic, loose coupling, robustness, versatility, flexibility and scalability at the same time. To solve that problem, a pervasive SOC based IOT communication middleware using runtime compilation and reflection has been presented in this paper and described its construction method in detail. The middleware combines advantages of SOA, MAS and advanced features of. Net platform in order to convert IOT's heterogeneous network into a homogeneous network. Series simulation and performance test reveals that the middleware meets the IOT communication requirements very well and its performance is good enough for general IOT applications. 1553-9105/Copyright © 2012 Binary Information Press.

This study investigates the structure of the editorial processes at a Swedish monthly magazine for interior decorating and design, Sköna hem, and assesses the carbon footprint (greenhouse gas emissions) of the editorial content production during one year. The objective is to define the processes using a computer based process modeling tool and to analyze the workflow in order to discover how the different steps in the production process relate to different environmentally related parameters. An additional objective is to present the carbon footprint of the overall editorial work and to identify the major reasons for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as any major data gaps and uncertainties. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken in order to identify the process steps involved in the content production. Environmentally related parameters, such as travel distance, mode of transports, and computer hours, were then collected for each process step. Life cycle assessment methodology was used to assess the potential greenhouse gas emissions of the editorial work at Sköna hem. A number of process steps were identified in the content production. Three overall phases were identified, into which the process steps can be grouped. Firstly, the planning phase consists of meetings with different key persons in order to plan the content of the next issues of the magazine. Secondly, the executive phase was identified. Here, all the articles and pictures are produced. Thirdly, the assembly phase includes text editing and page design. Finally, ready-made pages are sent to printing or to the digital publishing channels such as tablets and the web. According to the assessment made, the editorial content production at Sköna hem has a carbon footprint of 23 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. This paper presents YouPower, an open source platform designed to make people more aware of their energy consumption and encourage sustainable consumption with local communities. The platform is designed iteratively in collaboration with users in the Swedish and Italian test sites of the project to improve the design and increase active user participation. The community-oriented design is composed of parts that link energy data to energy actions, provide comparisons at different levels, generate dynamic time-of-use signals, offer energy conservation suggestions, and support social sharing. The goal is to bridge people's attitude-behavior gap in energy consumption and to facilitate the behavior change process towards sustainable energy consumption that is implementable in people's daily life. Preliminary results show that community-oriented energy intervention has the potential to improve user engagement significantly.

In this paper, a large scale Medium Voltage DC all-electric ship integrated power system is modeled from the prime mover (gas turbine) to the propulsion load. This system has a three-phase 21MW synchronous machine as a main generator and a three-phase 19MW induction motor as a main propulsion drive. The influence of propeller emergence on both electrical and mechanical components of the system is investigated.

A machining simulator seeks to display graphically the effects on the workpiece (and associated fixtures) of the cutter motions prescribed in an NC program. Simulators enable NC programmers and machine operators to detect visually potential collisions and gross programming errors. A machining verifier seeks to determine automatically, without recourse to human judgement, whether an NC program will produce a specified part without undesirable side effects (collisions, cutter breakage, etc.). Simulators and verifiers both require solid modelling facilities, but simulators need only fast display generators for Boolean combinations whereas verifiers require more varied and powerful facilities. This paper summarizes the issues underlying simulation and verification while describing a new simulator that is being converted into a verifier.

Rethinking Cognition: Morphological Info-Computation and the Embodied Paradigm in Life and Artificial Intelligence

This study aims to place Lorenzo Magnani’s Eco-Cognitive Computationalism within the broader context of current work on information, computation, and cognition. Traditionally, cognition was believed to be exclusive to humans and a result of brain activity. However, recent studies reveal it as a fundamental characteristic of all life forms, ranging from single cells to complex multicellular organisms and their networks. Yet, the literature and general understanding of cognition still largely remain human-brain-focused, leading to conceptual gaps and incoherency. This paper presents a variety of computational (information processing) approaches, including an info-computational approach to cognition, where natural structures represent information and dynamical processes on natural structures are regarded as computation, relative to an observing cognizing agent. We model cognition as a web of concurrent morphological computations, driven by processes of self-assembly, self-organization, and autopoiesis across physical, chemical, and biological domains. We examine recent findings linking morphological computation, morphogenesis, agency, basal cognition, extended evolutionary synthesis, and active inference. We establish a connection to Magnani’s Eco-Cognitive Computationalism and the idea of computational domestication of ignorant entities. Novel theoretical and applied insights question the boundaries of conventional computational models of cognition. The traditional models prioritize symbolic processing and often neglect the inherent constraints and potentialities in the physical embodiment of agents on different levels of organization. Gaining a better info-computational grasp of cognitive embodiment is crucial for the advancement of fields such as biology, evolutionary studies, artificial intelligence, robotics, medicine, and more. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Exploring Cognition through Morphological Info-Computational Framework

Traditionally, cognition has been considered a uniquely human capability involving perception, memory, learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. However, recent research shows that cognition is a fundamental ability shared by all living beings, from single cells to complex organisms. This chapter takes an info-computational approach (ICON), viewing natural structures as information and the processes of change in these structures as computations. It is a relational framework dependent on the perspective of a cognizing observer/cognizer. Informational structures are properties of the material substrate, and when focusing on the behavior of the substrate, we discuss morphological computing (MC). ICON and MC are complementary perspectives for a cognizer. Information and computation are inseparably connected with cognition. This chapter explores research connecting nature as a computational structure for a cognizer, with morphological computation, morphogenesis, agency, extended cognition, and extended evolutionary synthesis, using examples of the free energy principle and active inference. It introduces theoretical and practical approaches challenging traditional computational models of cognition limited to abstract symbol processing, highlighting the computational capacities inherent in the material substrate (embodiment). Understanding the embodiment of cognition through its morphological computational basis is crucial for biology, evolution, intelligence theory, AI, robotics, and other fields. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Natural computational architectures for cognitive info-communication

Recent comprehensive overview of 40 years of research in cognitive architectures, (Kotseruba and Tsotsos 2020), evaluates modelling of the core cognitive abilities in humans, but only marginally addresses biologically plausible approaches based on natural computation. This mini review presents a set of perspectives and approaches which have shaped the development of biologically inspired computational models in the recent past that can lead to the development of biologically more realistic cognitive architectures. For describing continuum of natural cognitive architectures, from basal cellular to human-level cognition, we use evolutionary info-computational framework, where natural/physical/morphological computation leads to evolution of increasingly complex cognitive systems. Forty years ago, when the first cognitive architectures have been proposed, understanding of cognition, embodiment and evolution was different. So was the state of the art of information physics, bioinformatics, information chemistry, computational neuroscience, complexity theory, self-organization, theory of evolution, information and computation. Novel developments support a constructive interdisciplinary framework for cognitive architectures in the context of computing nature, where interactions between constituents at different levels of organization lead to complexification of agency and increased cognitive capacities. We identify several important research questions for further investigation that can increase understanding of cognition in nature and inspire new developments of cognitive technologies. Recently, basal cell cognition attracted a lot of interest for its possible applications in medicine, new computing technologies, as well as micro- and nanorobotics.
