Changes in epidermal thickness are linked to various skin diseases, such as diabetic foot. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a noninvasive imaging technology, enables detailed visualization of skin layers. This study employed a deep learning approach using the U-Net architecture to analyze OCT images, specifically focusing on the stratum corneum (SC) and epidermis (ED) layers. Utilizing a dataset of 10,000 images, the U-Net model achieved 92 % accuracy in predicting SC and 95% accuracy for ED. These results highlight the potential of this method for accurate 3D visualization of SC and ED layers, paving the way for precise assessment of skin layer thickness and its changes in medical applications.

This study investigates the intelligent systems to evaluate walking interventions on skin thickness using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). The walking durations of 10 and 20 min were conducted with participants wearing insoles providing 160 mmHg air pressure. Skin thickness in the stratum corneum (SC) and epidermis (ED) was measured at four-foot regions: the big toe (T1), first metatarsal (M1), second metatarsal (M2), and heel (HL). Results revealed a significant decrease in SC at HL after 20 min of walking. This finding suggests that prolonged walking with air-pressure insoles may reduce mechanical stress at HL and could contribute to preventing and managing diabetic foot ulcers.

This research explored a novel multimodal approach for disease management in cauliflower crops. With the rising challenges in sustainable agriculture, the research focused on a patch spraying method to control disease and reduce crop losses and environmental impact. For non-destructive disease assessment, a spectral sensor was used to collect spectral information from diseased and healthy cauliflower parts. The spectral data sets were analyzed using decision tree and support vector machine（SVM） algorithms to identify the most accurate model for distinguishing diseased and healthy plants. The chosen model was integrated with a low-volume sprayer(50-150 L·ha-1),equipped with an electronic control unit for targeted spraying based on sensor-detected regions. The decision tree model achieved 89.9% testing accuracy, while the SVM model achieved 96.7% accuracy using hyperparameters: cost of 10.0 and tolerance of 0.001. The research successfully demonstrated the integration of spectral sensors, machine learning, and targeted spraying technology for precise input ***, the optimized sprayer achieved a 72.5% reduction in chemical usage and a significant time-saving of 21.0% compared to a standard sprayer for black rot-infested crops. These findings highlight the potential efficiency and resource conservation benefits of innovative sprayer technology in precision agriculture and disease management.

Weyl semimetals have attracted significant interest in condensed matter physics and materials science, due to their unique electronic and topological properties. These characteristics not only deepen our understanding of fundamental quantum phenomena, but also make Weyl semimetals promising candidates for advanced applications in electronics, photonics, and spintronics. This review provides a systematic overview of the field, covering theoretical foundations, material synthesis, engineering strategies, and emerging device applications. We first outline the key theoretical principles and distinctive properties of Weyl semimetals, followed by an examination of recent advancements that enhance their functional versatility. Finally, we discuss the critical challenges hindering their practical implementation and explore future development directions, along with the potential for expanding and enhancing their existing range of applications. By integrating discussions of both opportunities and obstacles, this review offers a balanced perspective on current progress and future directions in Weyl semimetal research. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Biological cilia exhibit metachronal movements that enable the expulsion of substances such as mucus and bacterial cells. Inspired by biological cilia, significant progress has been made in recent years in the development of artificial cilia. In particular, magnetic actuation has emerged as a prominent strategy for real-time, remote-controlled manipulation, offering noninvasive and reversible operation without inducing irreversible damage. However, the fabrication of artificial microcilia is currently constrained by limitations in achieving high aspect ratios, cost-effectiveness, and scalable production. In this study, advanced laser manufacturing is used to drill porous silicon (Si) templates, successfully demolding microcilia with a high aspect ratio (exceeding 9). By integrating silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles, a superhydrophobic surface is achieved with a hierarchical micro-nano structure. The experiments demonstrated that these structured microcilia not only exhibit remarkable durability but also maintain long-term superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, by blending with magnetic iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, superhydrophobic magnetic microcilia arrays (SMMA) are developed, enabling droplet transportation on their surface controlled by an external magnetic field. These artificial microcilia have potential applications in biomedical devices, self-cleaning anti-fouling surfaces, and human sensing technologies. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

The research presented in this paper focuses on social media usage, specifically Facebook, in times of the Covid-19 crisis when some Swedish citizens lost trust in their official institutions. Once Sweden decided not to comply with WHO recommendations, the great majority of the Swedish population rallied around the flag in support of that move. For those who questioned this approach not much support was available, so they turned to social media. We ran a survey of 371 Facebook users gathered around the "Dr Whistleblower oxygen for all" group. Combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, in this study we analyse the role of social media in situations when people lose trust in public institutions and are left out. The most interesting and surprising result of this study is the discovery of fear for Dr Whistleblower's future, and fear for participants' own lives. We argue that in times of grave crisis, when we need reliable information the most, we turn to social media not only due to its immediacy but also due to its ability to connect us with a much wider circle of people than our close circle of friends can do. Then, more than ever, we look for trustworthy information, we express our fears and look for help online, thus seriously disrupting the traditional news landscape. © The Authors, (2022). Following up with the speech technology development, spoken dialogue systems are getting commercialized. Many public service companies, such as call centres, tourist information centres, travel agencies, etc., are applying spoken dialogue systems for customer communication. However, there are many usability problems with these spoken dialogue systems. A study of the usability and user's experience of a consumer Swedish spoken dialog system is reported here. Six users went through three different scenarios in a home environment during the tests. The analysis of the participant's conversation with the dialogue system, observations, interviews and questionnaire were used as the testing methods. The result shows that the system is working, since all the users concluded their tasks. However, there are a few usability problems were found. These problems are: the understanding between the user and the system, the system's flexibility, naturalness, and correctness, error handling and the user's control of the system, as well as the information overloading to user's memory. Concerning the user's experience, the study showed that the variables as elegance, emotion, encouragement, intelligence or personality were not present. These variables would affect users' attitude towards the system.

It is a well-known fact that nomadic devices usage while driving can cause driver distraction that might lead to accidents. A proposed solution to increase safety might be an integrated in-vehicle gateway. There is a need to understand how integrated in-vehicle interface solutions are feasible to solve possible integration problems. Cooperation between stake-holders is needed to satisfy the end-users. In this report, we present the feasibility study and two laboratory studies. The feasibility study shows that there are positive attitudes towards integrated solutions. Two laboratory studies with simulator confirmed the safety advantages with integrated interface compared to nomadic device use while driving. The integrated interface design should focus on usability to reduce interaction complexity to support easier interaction and safer driving. However, the negative effects of distraction caused by performing the secondary task cannot be completely reduced. Therefore a Zonal adaptive management workload system is proposed that focus on driver performance factors as well as external traffic situations to have better predictive effects.
