An improved diagnosis method of technological systems is proposed in this paper that is based on their qualitative colored Petri-net model (Leitold et al. 2014). The proposed diagnosis method can be used when more than one fault occur in the system and if the fault evolves during the operation of the system. In order to make the diagnosis of complex process systems computationally feasible, a structural decomposition method is introduced to reduce the size of their occurrence graphs and to make the diagnosis easier. The proposed methods are illustrated on examples.

Within the Semantic Web field, Linked Data is an emerging technology offering advantages in terms of flexibility and openness also for industrial environments. It provides a powerful information model with simple extension mechanisms and a cross-domain character, which makes it possible to span flexible information spaces across enterprise boundaries. Thus, it is able to represent all facets of a digital plant, like devices and processes. Although developed with the focus on static data, it is also capable of handling dynamic data if the latter is adapted appropriately. This article describes these requirements and presents a concept for integrating process data into the Linked Data information space. A separation between a semantic description of the access to process data and the service providing exactly this information allows efficient and integration-ready access to data. The necessary vocabulary is described as well as the information model. A prototypical implementation of OPC UA integration into Linked Data is presented. The article further discusses the current status of the approach and provides future research challenges.

The true-fake detection of Chinese liquors can be considered as a one-class classification problem. Using only positive sample in training process brings about difficulties in determining the optimal parameters of one-class SVM and its kernel. And one-class SVM optimized with conventional grid search method has a low recognition rate of positive test samples. Hence, we proposed a new idea for recognition, namely boosting-based one-class SVM. Six different kinds of liquors were sampled by a self-designed electronic nose system. After the preprocessing and feature extraction of sample data, 18 groups of optimum parameters of one-class SVM were chosen from specified parameter range, each group was used to train a classifier with training algorithm. Then the true-fake decisions were made for test samples with boosting integration rules. Finally the recognition rates of Hongjinjiu and Lanjinjiu positive sample reached 95.24% and 100%, and the recognition rates of both positive and negative sample reached 97.04% and 94.83%, respectively.

We designed a portable electronic nose (e-nose) for rapid detection of Chinese liquors. The e-nose had an evaporation chamber wrapped with silicone heating band, which could vaporize the liquor samples in 1 minute. The sequential sampling and clean-out lasted 100 seconds and 3 minutes, respectively. Hence, one fast detection process could be finished within 3 minutes without regard to clean-out. In order to acquire enough information from array's sampling curves for classification, we chose 60 features (including 6 features per sensor) according to the response curves, the derivative of the response curves and the relative change rate curves of conductivity. Then the dimension of features was reduced by principle component analysis (PCA). Finally, classification of Chinese liquors was performed using C-Support Vector Machine (C-SVM) and the classification rate was 96.7%.

As an approach to cope with rising volatility of sales markets and increasingly shorter development cycles, process industries are expecting much from the concept of modularization. However, a topic that is still rarely focused in this context is safety. Therefore, this paper is focused on the expected challenges of engineering functional safety including the architectures of safety instrumented systems, and the requirements of modularization. A study of the optimal real-time management of hydrogen H_2 networks in an oil refinery has been carried out. The paper addresses the main problems related to the operation of the networks combining data reconciliation with a real-time optimization RTO system for the optimal production and redistribution of hydrogen. Coherent and robust results have been achieved regarding the data reconciliation stage despite all the uncertainty in measurements and process operation, according to the off-line validation performed. Once the network state has been estimated, a RTO approach was followed aiming at the real-time optimal operation of the global refinery H_2 network;an analysis of the solutions achieved was also performed.

Polymerization processes are characterized by exothermic reactions with complicated nonlinear dynamics, especially in batch / semi-batch mode. The complexities of the polymerization kinetics and reactor behaviour pose difficult quality control problems. Therefore a control strategy that ensures an optimal as well as robust operation of polymerization reactors, under the influence of various disturbances control, is required to achieve the desired product specifications. It is extremely important to develop efficient methods for the synthesis of polymerization control strategies. In this work, the optimal target values of molecular weight and copolymer composition for a semi-batch styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymerization reactor are set as set point trajectories and are tracked by PI controllers. Two versions of PI control, namely two independent SISO controllers and multivariable PI controller are attempted in this study for control of molecular weight and copolymer composition using coolant temperature and inlet feeding flow rate as manipulated inputs. This approach overcomes the drawbacks of open loop optimal control implementation though handling of the effects of load disturbances as well as set point changes. The simulation results demonstrate the usability of this approach for online optimization and control.

This paper studies the makespan minimisation scheduling problem in a two-stage hybrid flow shop. The first stage has one machine and the second stage hasmidentical parallel machines. Neither the processing time nor probability distribution of the processing time of each job is uncertain. We propose a robust (min–max regret) scheduling model. To solve the robust scheduling problem, which is NP-hard, we first derive some properties of the worst-case scenario for a given schedule. We then propose both exact and heuristic algorithms to solve this problem. In addition, computational experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.
