Online routing of two vehicles to an emergency scene in grid transportation network

The online routing problem of two vehicles to an emergency scene is considered. In grid transportation network, some of the edges may be suddenly blocked and the blockage will not be observed until reaching an endpoint of the blocked edge. The goal is to minimize the arrival time of the first vehicle with at most k blockages. An online strategy named Row-first and Line-first is presented and the competitive ratio is analyzed, and the ratio is proved to be tight. The optimization of the online strategy in some situations is also proved.

The paper is concerned with the problem of robust filtering for a class of systems with state-dependent uncertainties and energy-bounded disturbance. The state-dependent uncertainties can more precisely describe many practical dynamic systems with parameters varying with system states, such as spring stiffness, nonlinear resistor and friction coefficient. A non-quadratic Lyapunov function is adopted, upon which the sufficient condition for the filtering performance analysis is first derived. Then, the parameter-dependent full-order filter is designed such that the corresponding filtering error system is globally asymptotically stable and guarantees a noise attenuation performance index. A numerical example of a class of tunnel diode circuit systems is provided to show the effectiveness of the derived theoretical results.

A moving horizon approach to multivariable input design in general linear systems with constraints

The quality of a model determines the closed loop performance of model predictive controllers. However, identification of high quality multivariable models is a time and energy intensive exercise. The industrial model predictive controllers are designed using large dimensional multivariable models and they are often identified using ad-hoc single input bump tests. A novel multivariable input design approach is developed using a modified model predictive control objective function. It is shown that the proposed input design approach is trace optimal with respect to the covariance of model parameters. The approach is shown to work well in closed loop on both well and ill-conditioned processes even under model-plant mismatch while meeting input and output constraints.

This paper investigates the performance of a single-phase induction motor (SPIM) drive operated as two-phase motor (TPIM) and controlled basing on fuzzy logic (FL). Because of coupling behavior between fluxes in motor, it is still necessary to advance in controller tuning. The applied control strategy proposed in this paper is the vector control based on fuzzy controllers. The application of this control strategy to the single-phase motor operating as two-phase motor increases its dynamic performance and constitutes a contribution to the study of this machine. Indeed, this type of machine has not yet taken its whole share from various works present until now, compared to the three-phase induction machine. The performances of the proposed control; applied to the single-phase induction motor supplied by voltage source inverter; are investigated by simulations under different operating conditions. The obtained results; compared to the traditional control method based on conventional controllers (CC); show the effectiveness and stronger robustness of the control system.

In this paper, the problems of fuzzy modeling of activated sludge wastewater treatment processes and predictive control of dissolved oxygen are investigated. A structure identification algorithm is proposed, by which the structure of the fuzzy rules can be constructed according to the Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1). Utilizing the fuzzy c-means cluster algorithm, the required fuzzy space of input variables is derived and the consequent parameters are identified using the method of least squares. Based on the obtained fuzzy model, the control signal is formulated by solving a convex optimization problem such that the dissolved oxygen concentration in an aerobic reactor of the wastewater treatment plant can be maintained at the set-point. Compared with the traditional PID control, the proposed fuzzy modelbased predictive control paradigm achieves satisfactory benefits in terms of both transient and steady performance.

Turbulent non-premixed combustion of gaseous fuels is of importance for many technical applications, especially for the steel and refractory industry. Accurate turbulent flow and temperature fields are of major importance in order to predict details on the concentration fields. The performances of the GRI-Mech 3.0 and the Jones and Lindstedt mechanisms are compared. Detailed chemistry is included with the GRI-Mech 3.0 and J-L kinetic mechanisms in combination with the laminar flamelet combustion model. The combustion system selected for this comparison is a confined non-premixed methane flame surrounded by co-flowing air The simulation results are compared with experimental data of Lewis and Smoot （2001）.

Optimal Design and Operation of Energy systems under Uncertainty

This paper is concerned with integrated design and operation of energy systems that are subject to significant uncertainties. The problem is cast as a two-stage stochastic nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear program, in which the first and second stages include design decisions and operational decisions, respectively. By exploiting the separable and decomposable structure of the problem, an efficient global optimization method, called nonconvex generalized Benders decomposition (NGBD), is developed based on convex relaxation and generalized Benders decomposition. The efficiency of NGBD can be further improved via the notion of piecewise convex relaxations. The advantages of the proposed formulation and solution method are demonstrated through case studies of two industrial energy systems, a natural gas production network and a polygeneration plant. The first example shows that the stochastic programming formulation can result in better expected economic performance than the deterministic formulation, and that the NGBD solution method is dramatically more efficient than a state-of-the-art global optimization solver, especially for large numbers of scenarios. The second example further shows that the integration of piecewise convex relaxations can improve the efficiency of NGBD by at least an order of magnitude.

Model Predictive control (MPC) is a powerful tool in the control of large scale chemical processes and has become the standard method for constrained multivariable control problems. Hence, the number of MPC applications is increasing steadily and it is being used in application domains other than petrochemical industries. A common observation by the industrial practitioners is that success of any MPC application requires not only encient initial deployment but also maintenance of initial effectiveness. To this end, we propose a novel high level automated support strategy for MPC systems. Such a strategy consists of components such as performance monitoring, performance diagnosis, least costly closed loop experiment design, re-identification and autotuning. This work presents the novel technological developments in each component and demonstrates them on a distillation column case study. We show that automated support strategy restores nominal performance after a performance drop is detected and takes the right course of action depending on its cause.
