In this work, scheduling problems with resource allocation and past-sequence-dependent (p-s-d) setup times are considered. Under these settings, the actual job processing times are dependent on the amount of resource allocated and the setup times are proportionate to the length of the already processed jobs. The objective function is a combination of the total completion time and the total resource consumption. In addition, the machine may need maintenance to improve its production efficiency, so the maintenance is also integrated. The optimal job sequence, the optimal amount of resource allocated to each job, and the optimal maintenance position are determined jointly. It is shown that the problem under study is polynomial time solvable.

A simple dynamic model of an industrial size synchronous generator operating in a nuclear power plant is developed in this paper based on first engineering principles. The constructed state-space model consists of a nonlinear state equation and a bi-linear output equation. It has been shown that the model is locally asymptotically stable with parameters obtained from the literature for a similar generator. The effect of load disturbances on the partially controlled generator has been analyzed by simulation using a traditional PI controller. It has been found that the controlled system is stable and can follow the set-point changes in the effective power well. The disturbance rejection of the controller is also satisfactory.

Complex chemical reaction networks often exhibit different dynamic behaviour on different time scales. A combined approach is proposed in this work for determining physically meaningful mass action realizations of complex chemical reaction networks that describe its dynamic behaviour on different time scales. This is achieved by appropriately reducing the detailed overall mass action kinetic scheme using quasi steady state assumptions fit to the particular time scale, and then searching for an optimal realization using mixed integer linear programing. Furthermore, the relationship between the properties (reversibility, deficiency, stability) of the obtained realizations of the same system on different time scales are also investigated and related to the same properties of the detailed overall model. It is shown that the reduced models obtained by quasi steady state assumptions may show exotic nonlinear behaviour, such as oscillations, when the original detailed is globally asymptotically stable. The proposed methods are illustrated by using a simple Michaelis-Menten type reaction kinetic example. The simplified versions of the well known Brusselator model have also been investigated and presented as a case study.

Equations describing the ES behavior on the ellipsoid will be derived using a deterministic approach and experimentally verified. An ensemble modelling strategy, which is based on the genetic algorithm neural network (GA-NN) optimisation, is developed in this paper. A diversity index, defined by the dissimilarity between the current neural network (NN) and the set of existing NNs, is first introduced to facilitate the qualification of the current NN for being included in the ensemble network. A fitness-weighted assemble scheme is then proposed to form the GA-NN ensemble model. The unique advantage of this ensemble modelling scheme is its high efficiency, thanks to the full exploitation of information generated during the GA-NN optimisation. Preliminary results obtained for the prediction of the Charpy impact energy of heat-treated steel are promising, with the model performance being significantly improved as compared to previous modelling results.

On current automation systems a device failure might lead to significant down times of a plant as well as man power to replace and - more important - to setup the replacement device. Since the physical replacement can't be circumvented, the setup procedure could be automatized as much as possible. This paper shows an approach based on a new automation system designed as a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Advantages of this service-orientation for the automation environment are described in detail. The presented choreography of services yields to a flexible, dynamic and scalable system like it is well known for today's distributed, information technology systems - e.g. grid computing. This approach is applied to the self-configuration scenario as a demonstration of the benefits and chances, which could be achieved by modeling automation systems based on the SOA principle. A prototype realizes the presented service-choreography using real-world's automation components.
