In this paper, we present an overall study focused on the modeling, identification and control of the Pierburg mechatronic actuator. This actuator is used in the BMW M57 diesel engine to control all the air which are charged and entered in the vehicle engine. The obtained model from the identification procedure is sufficiently closer to the practical actuator behavior and captures most of its characteristics. This mechatronic actuator is subject of parameter variation during its life span. A nonlinear control based on the Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity-Base control (IDA-PBC) is designed in order to ensure the desired performances. Simulation results show the efficiency of both the obtained model and the control strategy.

The goal of the Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG) is to determine how technical INCOSE knowledge management needs are currently being met, and what the new state(s) should be. Input from the panel members, and most importantly from the audience for this panel discussion, will help shape the direction and future contributions of the INCOSE KMWG. One of our panelists, Jack Ring, says, "I claim that the Future Direction of Knowledge Management in INCOSE is grossly under-conceptualized. Three concepts that may merit further dialogue are:. We could get on with developing and sharing knowledge about modeling stochastic systems, non-deterministic systems, agent-aided design and even generative/autocatalytic systems, The engine for the G2SEBoK will be the next generation SE tool. Things like CORE, SysML-oriented tools, OpEMCSS, etc., become plug-ins, The G2SEBoK should do more than talk ABOUT systems praxis. It should give examples of the work products. These should be real examples that are prompted by posing typical problems, then posting work products as proposed by participants. Currently the final product from most INCOSE Working Groups is a printed document (which is also available in electronic form). Should this change?. Another panelist, Raymond Jorgensen, says: "Wiki technologies have provided an excellent forum for encouraging improved communication and sharing across the community. At Rockwell Collins, a Wiki environment is being used to encourage sharing best practices across the enterprise. Instead of different business areas publishing unique practices in stale "PDF" files on local networks, one enterprise environment is being used to host the collective enterprise knowledge of best practices in engineering. Similar techniques could be applied at INCOSE.". If a Wiki is so good, why did the SEHv3.1 Wiki lay dormant on the INCOSE web site for over two years? Is a Wiki suitable for the INCOSE environment? If so, who will control it?. © 2010 The Authors.

Two helium refrigerators, each rated for 3.5 KW at 20 K, are used at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Building No. 32 to provide cryogenic‐pumping within two large thermal‐vacuum chambers. These refrigerators were originally commissioned in 1996. New changes to the controls of these refrigerators were recently completed. This paper describes some of the control issues that necessitated the controls change‐over. It will describe the modifications and the new process control which allows the refrigerators to take advantage of the Ganni Cycle “floating pressure” control technology. The controls philosophy change‐over to the floating pressure control technology was the first application on a helium gas refrigeration system. Previous implementations of the floating pressure technology have been on 4 K liquefaction and refrigeration systems, which have stored liquid helium volumes that have level indications used for varying the pressure levels (charge) in the system for capacity modulation. The upgrades have greatly improved the performance, stability, and efficiency of these two refrigerators. The upgrades have also given the operators more information and details about the operational status of the main components (compressors, expanders etc.) of the refrigerators at all operating conditions (i.e. at various loads in the vacuum chambers). The performance data of the two systems, pre and post upgrading are presented.

A non-linear modelling approach of dynamic prediction model for mixed concentrate grade consisting of a linear part and a nonlinear part is developed. The nonlinear part is implemented using the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM), where the problem of selecting model parameters is transformed into the probability distribution function (PDF) control of the modelling error. Both the PDF control based and minimum entropy based model parameter selection approaches are proposed. The experiment results show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

The development of a tuning procedure for standard Kalman filter algorithm based on Q and R matrices duality principle is the main issue of this article. The tuning procedure is based on heuristics that are guided by the influence of Q and R matrices on the Kalman gain selections, as these matrices variations are driven by the QR-duality principle. An analysis of the filter performance is carried out by decreasing or increasing the filter bandwidth, the tuning objective aims to build optimal gains sets that map an aerospace vehicle behavior. Taking into account the rocket stages, some discussions about practical aspects of dynamic systems models simulation are presented in the sense of displacement, velocity and acceleration state space variables.

AlGalnP laser diodes (LDs) are used in a wide range of digital equipment, such as MO/CD/DVD optical pick-up units, laser printers and barcode scanners. These lasers are expected to be used for the next-generation hard disk drives (HDDs) using thermally-assisted magnetic recording systems, mobile devices and other digital products. To keep up with the increasing demand, we have undertaken the development of higher-output and lower-power-consumption LDs. By optimizing our 4-inch-wafer process, we have succeeded in the development of a 660 nm short-cavity ridge-waveguide laser (L = 300 μm) that can demonstrate the output power per unit cavity length as high as 100 mW/mm (CW operation, 25°C to 80°C). This output power far surpasses 64 mW/mm by a high-power laser (L = 2200 μm) designed for high-speed recordable DVD systems.

This paper investigates the absolute stability problem for Lur'e singularly perturbed systems with multiple nonlinearities. The objective is to determine if the system is absolutely stable for any epsilon E (0, (epsilon)_(0)], where epsilon denotes the perturbation parameter and (epsilon)_(0) is a pre-defined positive scalar. Firstly, an epsilon-dependent Lyapunov function of Lur'e-postnikov form is constructed. Then, a stability criterion expressed in terms of epsilon-independent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is derived. Finally, an example is given to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the obtained method.

Quantitative microbiological risk assessment aims at estimating the risk of illness that is related to a certain pathogen and food type combination through the use of simulations. A recent trend can be seen in which uncertainty about the risk estimate is characterized separately from variability, generally implemented by means of a two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation. This research aims at identifying the key parameters that contribute to the obtained risk while keeping the effect of uncertainty and variability separated using a methodology based on analysis of variance. The risk related to Listeria monocytogenes in meat preparations is used as a case study. It is found that uncertainty about the correct dose-response model is determining the output most. Also the variability distribution of storage duration and storage temperature have a major effect on the final risk. Furthermore, uncertainty about the location of the storage duration distribution is an important factor determining risk. These findings illustrate how the methodology proposed in this research enables identification of the relative importance of all model parameters such as temperature, storage duration, food contamination, etc., and also comparison of the impact of variability versus uncertainty about model parameters on the final risk estimate.

In continuous annealing processes, strip tension is an important factor which indicates whether the annealing line works steadily. The strip tension detection in the continuous annealing process, therefore, is essential for the reliable and stable operation of the units, and will help to improve the quality of strip products. However, in real annealing processes, only a limited number of strip tensions can be measured. Since installing tension sensors everywhere will be unrealistic and expensive, in this paper a cascade reduced-order observer method with principal component analysis (PCA) and neural networks (NN) compensation is proposed to estimate the unknown tensions between each two neighboring rolls so as to monitor the tension profile for the whole line. When the main observer model is established, the influences of strip inertia and roll eccentricity on tensions are taken into account for better estimation. Moreover, when the error compensation is designed, PCA scores are used as the inputs to the NN. The application results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, with the estimated tensions used for the analysis of the strip-breaks fault.

The operational pressure control is a cost-effective way to leakage reduction and many pressure control methods and algorithms have been developed. Whilst the pressure control algorithm is model-based, the hydraulic model of the considered distribution network is not always available. Therefore, this paper will focus on the development of an aggregated hydraulic model of the network considered, in particular, identification of a leakage enhanced model using the operational measurements or the available historical data. This will enable a pressure optimisation algorithm to calculate the optimal pressure schedules for the implementation of a pressure control scheme. The identification problem is formulated as a parameter estimation problem in this paper and a least-square based method is derived for estimating the parameters in the model. A case study provided by a UK water company is performed to illustrate the use of the method and the identification results from real operational data are presented. © 2009 ASCE.
